Scott cursed himself for the one time he'd ever taken Jimmy's word for something.
He cursed Jimmy, too. He cursed that stupid fish for showing up, spouting some nonsense about cod blood and how he was safe around Scott.
(He cursed himself for believing anyone could be safe around him)
He cursed himself for letting Jimmy stay in Rivendell. He cursed himself for not noticing the way Jimmy always picked seats closest to the fires, the way he never went swimming.
He cursed himself for ignoring how Jimmy kept his hands closed, the webbing hidden against his palms.
He cursed himself for letting it get this far.
He sat on his bed, fighting the way his chest was constricting and his heart had dropped to his stomach.
He brushed ice out of Jimmy's hair, closing his eyes. He always thought that Jimmy, with his open eyes, looked dead when he slept- now he knew that he'd been wrong.
Finally, he got up and rang for a servant.
It hurt, deep in his gut, as soon as he did, he was accepting reality. He couldn't keep pretending the morning was like every other.
He looked back at where, just hours ago, his husband had been asleep. Now, there was only ice and empty flesh.
He closed his eyes, and didn't open them again until the servants and the corpse were gone.
me, to my housemates, one of whom is a thermal engineer: if someone had hypothermia, is the best way to warm them up ‘spoon them’, or ‘cuddle chest to chest’? I feel like it could be either – spooning is the classic warming position, and you warm up the colder part, but spoon the front and you insulate the skin with the largest temperature delta
housemates: [fervent, serious debate]
me, after a couple of minutes: to be clear, this is for a final fantasy 7 fanfiction scene where my character got really cold, the stakes aren’t high in getting this completely right.
housemate: does the hypothermia exist sheerly as an excuse for the cuddling?
me: that is the only reason hypothermia exists in fanfiction.
Augusnippets Day 9: Hypothermia
Fandom: The Dragon Prince
Note: This takes place during season 6
Summary: What is Callum had fallen into the frozen sea on Rayla and his way to the Starscraper?
"Ice water is cold." Was the first Callum said when Rayla pulled him out from under the ice. They must have found a weak spot in the frozen sea or maybe it was just the mage's luck.
"Of course it is you dummy." Rayla pulled Callum forwards, trying to get him further from the hole in the ice. He was still coughing as he tried to act like everything was fine.
The wind was cold against the teens skin. Even with his clothing, the wind chill clung to his bones.
"Are you going to be okay?"
"I'm going to have to be." It was unfortunate but true. There was no Callum could go. They had caught fire to the frozen ship. There was no point in going home, it would just make their trip worthless. So they had to go to the Starscraper.
The wind bit at his fingers until they started to become numb. Callum shivered with every step. He refused to tell Rayla; she'd worry too much. The elf would try to help him; which as much as Callum wouldn't have minded, he didn't want her to get hurt.
As they walked, the prince started to feel more and more tired. His breathing quickened. "Can we" Callum shivered, "take a break?"
Rayla walked over to him. She brought her hand up to cuff his face. "Callum you're freezing."
"Nah, you know what that feels like more than I do." Then he leaned into Rayla. "You're really warm." Callum whispered.
"Come here." The elf picked him up. "I'll carry you the rest of the way."
"You don't have to." The human mumbled.
Shaking her head, Rayla pulled Callum closer to him. Hopefully they would arrive at The Starscraper soon.

It's the holidays, and Tony Stark has quite a few enemies. One of those enemies just so happens to target Tony by taking Pepper and Peter. Tony's at a loss when Pepper is abandoned with no idea where Peter may be. He'll have to have backup to find his kid, and who would be better for that than the recently exonerated Ex-Avengers?

Note: Not canon! Infinity War and Endgame did not happen, but Civil War did. In this story, Peter’s aunt passed away from a heart condition shortly after his sixteenth birthday. Peter is a junior at Midtown. Tony married Pepper in January after the Vulture incident when Peter was fifteen. Peter attended the wedding with May. May passed away in September of that year. Tony and Pepper took Peter in, and were able to adopt him. He is Peter Parker-Stark. Morgan does not yet exist.

A human trafficking ring set their eyes on Midtown high, and Peter Parker was one of those that were taken.

MJ really hates her mother, and she's only partially sure, but very hopeful, that her best friend is a vigilante that could help her escape her mother's clutches.

Oh yes I do!!
BIG reason would be getting wet. You lose body heat VERY fast when you’re wet compared to when you’re dry, causing hypothermia, frostbite, and frostnip to become issues at higher temperatures than if you were dry. This also includes sweat, though to a lesser degree.
Improper cold protection would be another one- if your character isn’t wearing a jacket then they’ll be more vulnerable to the cold. This goes for just about every article of clothing.
Hypothermia can be caused by any situation that causes someone’s body to lose heat faster than it can produce it. Listed above are the two most common/expected reasons (at least based on my knowledge- but I have no medical background, I’m just a huge nerd. Make sure you double check all the info I’m giving you, cause even though I’m pretty sure I’m right you never know). However, depending on the setting and characters involved, you can get super creative with this!!
Hope that helps :)
Anyone got good reasons a character could get hypothermia?
not to sound like I’m in the thick of it but I found a how would you die in a polar expedition quiz

Writing characters who are exposed to cold and hypothermia
Because I know many people live in countries without cold winter and I’ve read way too many otherwise amazing fics where the MC faints after an hour in 20 F° (about - 6.5 C°), all this while clad in heavy clothing, sweaters, scarfs and winter coat.
Hypothermia
While everyone reacts differently to different temperatures, there are some rules and symptoms of hypothermia. Symptoms, in order as hypothermia progresses:
Shivering, which may stop as hypothermia progresses
Slow, shallow breathing
Confusion and/or memory loss
Drowsiness or exhaustion
Slurred or mumbled speech
Loss of coordination, fumbling hands, stumbling steps
A slow, weak pulse
In severe hypothermia, a person may be unconscious without obvious signs of breathing or a pulse
Body temperatures of different stages of hypothermia:
Mild: 89-95 F° (31-35 C°)
Moderate: 82-89 F° (27.5-31 C°)
Severe: lower than 82 F° (27.5 C°)
Keep in mind that some people are more sensitive to cold due to their age or physique. People with increased risk of hypothermia include:
The elderly, infants, and children without adequate heating, clothing
Underweight people
People who are outdoors for extended periods
People in cold weather whose judgment is impaired by alcohol or drugs
Treatment
Everyone with hypothermia needs immediate medical assistance, but until that arrives the character can be helped with the following actions:
Moving them to a warm, dry place if possible, or sheltering them from the elements
Removing wet clothing
Covering their whole body and head with blankets, leaving only the face clear
Providing skin-to-skin contact (fanfic material™)
Providing warm drinks if the person is conscious, but never caffeine or alcohol
Carrying out CPR if the breathing stops
If the shivering stops even though the character hasn’t returned to a warmer place, that’s actually a very bad sign and means that the person’s heat regulation systems are shutting off.
Another thing to note is that when a person faints from the cold, their body temperature is already so low that they must be warmed up immediately, otherwise they die.
