This ⬆️ for one. But personally Will has had to mature at a very young age without the upside. Honestly one of the only thing that Will has that is truly "childish" is dnd and his friendship with the party.

(Will is very different compared to his friends by being on the poorer side of life, having to make some of his own meals because Joyce and Jonathan working, the abuse inflicted by his father, and etc. Will has gone through alot in his life that most people don't think about intill they are living on their own, without their support system, or having significant impact in their lives.)

This has gotta be one of the worst Will Byers characterization I've ever seen

This Has Gotta Be One Of The Worst Will Byers Characterization I've Ever Seen
This Has Gotta Be One Of The Worst Will Byers Characterization I've Ever Seen
This Has Gotta Be One Of The Worst Will Byers Characterization I've Ever Seen
This Has Gotta Be One Of The Worst Will Byers Characterization I've Ever Seen

His "flaws" being: getting upset when his friends ignore him and push him to the side (aka just having human emotions) and "lashes out" by getting upset and leaving after being made fun of for hours trying to play a game they all loved. This person seriously thinks he's in the wrong for feeling alienated. "Anger in his body" he's gotten angry like 3 times since S1 what are you talking about. Have you seen Mike? "Finds the world unfair" because it is unfair, that's the whole point. He's been struggling with finding a place where he belongs because the world just doesn't understand or accept him.

"Selfish at times" I highly doubt this person would call El "selfish at times" for wanting to spend time with Mike, or dumping him because she was having more fun with Max. It's not selfish to have wants. "understanding what it means to be selfless" as if being selfless hasn't been his #1 trait since s1. "Move in from fantasy and into reality" wanting to recapture his childhood after losing it for so long isn't wrong or makes him lesser of a person. This is just mean to the people who've had a similar experience to this.

Will does screw up and say and do the wrong thing sometimes, but that doesn't define him as a character. Getting upset at times (for a good reason, mind you) doesn't make him an angry person. Wanting happiness doesn't make him selfish. I don't think I've ever seen such a genuine characterization this bad before. The double standards are insane.

just a thought I’ve always had about gravity falls that i felt like sharing.

The people in gravity falls are in a rather simple style right. But I don’t think its just about being easier to animate, let me explain, the only thing that is simple in the show is bill and the people i believe the reason for this is to make everything in gravity falls look extremely weird and off-putting in comparison to the relatively innocent art style

i think that Patrick Bateman would be a lovely singer. i think that he would have an amazing range and he'd be able to sing falsetto and actually sound really good. i think that he would occasionally hum or sing a tune while chilling at home or sitting in his office at P&P and if anyone ever caught him he would get extremely embarrassed even though he's so good at it. if music or singing or whatever was a topic in a conversation with his friends they'd all point at Pat and b like "oh yeah Bateman can sing, he's like the opera LOL!" and pat wld find it super emasculating

One More Thing, Alice Not Caring About Misfiling Is Giving Gertrude Organizing The Archives In A Way

One more thing, Alice not caring about misfiling is giving Gertrude “organizing” the archives in a way that is completely unintelligible. I’m starting to get on the Alice is not who she seems thing. I have a wild “through the looking glass” vibe/theory about her starting to form.

Cerberus this, Spot that... but when will people get over the fact that indeed, Hades gave a ridiculously common dog name to his three-headed giant hound, and start talking about his goddamn horses?!

Hades has a golden chariot drawn by a team of four immortal, sable-black horses. All nice and cool, until you discover that the names of his horses are Alastor, Orphnaeus, Aethon and Nycteus, according to Claudius.

Cerberus This, Spot That... But When Will People Get Over The Fact That Indeed, Hades Gave A Ridiculously

Orphnaeus crudele micans Aethonque sagitta ocior et Stygii sublimis gloria Nycteus armenti Ditisque nota signatus Alastor.

Orphnaeus, savage and fleet, Aethon, swifter than an arrow, great Nycteus, proud glory of Hell's steeds, and Alastor, branded with the mark of Dis. (1.284–285)

At first you would be like: "Okay, but all of those names sound badass, right?" Right?! Nope!

Orphnaeus means darkness.

Aethon means blazing or burning.

Nycteus means night.

Alastor means destroyer or avengener.

After naming his dog Spot dude literally tried to find some dreadful names for his horses so that he would no longer embarass himself, and he succesfully failed. It really seems like an edgy 12yo emo kid gave them those names, not an ancient deity who rules over the third part of the world.

Honestly I believe that the main reason why Hades and Persephone don't have any children in the vast majority of greek myths isn't because Hades was regarded as infertile or any shit like that, but because Persephone knew that he would give the worst names possible to his children.

At this point I'm really surprised that he doesn't have "Giver of Bad Names" as one of his epithets.

I know that it may sound dumb, but I had this thought for a while.

Imagine you're a fisherman and you get drunk. It's already dark outside, so you cannot see anything too well around you either. Suddenly, you see something moving into the water. It looks like a snake. There is another, and another, and another... and then you realize that all of them seem to be attached to the same body. You freak out and turn back home. In the next days, you tell your family and best friends about what you saw that night. And because everyone hears what they prefer to hear and over exaggerate things just to make them seem greater than they already were, the legend of a snake with multiple heads slowly starts to appear. Years later, Hesiod includes that said monster in the Theogony, as part of the twelve labours of Heracles.

That's how an octopus accidentally became the source of inspiration for the Hydra.

Rambling about Despoina, because I have a lot of questions about her and my brain is broken.

Despoina is probably one of the most obscure Goddesses from Greek Mythology. She's considered the Goddess of Arkadian Mysteries, yet at the same time people doubt wheter or not she's a stand-alone deity or just another epithet for another goddess (usually Persephone). To make things even more complicated now, her name isn't actually one. It's an epithet, and "her true name and function were revealed only to the intitiates". "Despoina" was also an epithet used for Demeter and Persephone as well.

Now, there have been made a lot of speculations and assumptions based on the few things that we know about her. The most common theory is that Despoina was in fact the Arcadian equivalent of Persephone, and that Mycenaean Poseidon later got divided into Poseidon and Hades. On short: many people believe that back in the Mycenaean Greece there were Two Goddesses worshipped together as the Two Queens, later refferred to as the Two Mistresses: Demeter and Despoina. It is very likely that both of them are two later versions of two pre-Greek Goddesses of Arcadia. At the same time we have Mycenaean Poseidon, who was not only the god of the sea, but had strong associations with the Underworld as well. He also seemed to be in close connection with the Two Queens and form some sort of a divine trio with them, since he was refferred to as the King. Later, Despoina slowly became Persephone, whereas some of the attributes that were initially associated with Poseidon were taken away from him and used in order to create another god, Hades, because ancient people considered that it's better to have two separate deities for these two different realms. Finally, we're reaching Classic Greek Mythology, where Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, Hades is her husband, and Poseidon is the only one of the Big Three who didn't bang her.

This theory is highly accepted because it seems the most plausible one (plus the fact that there aren't enough surviving sources from that time leaves an open door for whatever thoughts could cross people's minds), yet at the same time highly criticized for rightful reasons, such as the fact that there's a chance that Hades might've been an already existing deity in Mycenaean Mythology, but because there are no surviving written works about him from that time there's nothing certain. Another reason is because not everyone considered Despoina to be just an epithet or an older version of Persephone. And by "not everyone" I mean Pausanias:

Pausanias, Description of Greece 8. 25. 5 (trans. Jones) (Greek travelogue C2nd A.D.) :

"When Demeter was wandering in search of her daughter [Persephone], she was followed, it is said, by Poseidon, who lusted after her. So she turned, the story runs, into a mare, and grazed with the mares of Onkios (Oncius) [in Arkadia (Arcadia)]; realising that he was outwitted, Poseidon changed into a stallion and enjoyed Demeter. At first, they say, Demeter was angry at what had happened, but later on she laid aside her wrath and wished to bathe in the Ladon . . . Demeter, they say, had by Poseidon a daughter [Despoine (Despoena)], whose name they are not wont to divulge to the uninitiated, and a horse called Areion (Arion)."

According to him Despoina and Persephone aren’t the same goddess, but two different deities. On top of that, Despoina was conceived during the time when Demeter was searching for Persephone, being youger than her, and has a horse twin brother. Which is very weird, considering the fact that Pausanias wrote this about 800 years after Homeric Hymns to Demeter, and this is the only source that states that Despoina and Persephone are two different goddesses.

Here's another fragment:

Pausanias, Description of Greece 8. 37. 1 - 8. 38. 2 :

Despoine the Arkadians worship more than any other god, declaring that she is a daughter of Poseidon and Demeter. Despoine (Mistress) is her surname among the many, just as they surname Demeter's daughter by Zeus Kore (Core, the Maid). But whereas the real name of Kore (the Maid) is Persephone, as Homer and Pamphos before him say in their poems, the real name of Despoine (the Mistress) I am afraid to write to the uninitiated.

Here he states that Despoina is her surname (just how Kore is a surname for Persephone). But while we do know that Kore is Persephone, Despoina's real name still remains a secret. What is really weird here is... why would they be afraid to say her real name in the first place? We know for a matter of fact that Ancient Greeks were usually scared of saying the real names of the Underworld deities. Hades for example is always refferred to by lots of epithets and euphemisms, because people believed that by saying or writing his real name they would arouse his wrath. In this case then Despoina could be a chtonic deity as well, yet her affiliations with the Underworld are unclear, if they really exist.

But then, if Despoina would be a chtonic goddess, and she isn't Persephone, then who else could she be?

Pausanias, Description of Greece 8. 37. 1 - 8. 38. 2 :

"From Akakesion (Acacesium) [in Arkadia (Arcadia)] it is four stades to the sanctuary of Despoine (Despoena, the Mistress). First in this place is a temple of Artemis Hegemone (Leader) [probably Hekate (Hecate)], with a bronze image, holding torches, which I conjecture to be about six feet high. From this place there is an entrance into the sacred enclosure of Despoine.

[...]

Demeter carries a torch in her right hand; her other hand she has laid upon Despoine. Despoine has on her knees a staff and what is called the box, which she holds in her right hand. On both sides of the throne are images. By the side of Demeter stands Artemis [probably here identified with Hekate] wrapped in the skin of a deer, and carrying a quiver on her shoulders, while in one hand she holds a torch, in the other two serpents; by her side a bitch, of a breed suitable for hunting, is lying down.

Judging by these two experts, there is a small, vague chance that Despoina might be strongly identified with Hecate. Besides the fact that Despoina was one of Hecate's epithets as well, she was sometimes considered to be the daughter of Demeter. Hecate also plays a major role in Homeric Hymns to Demeter, and near the end of the myth she becomes Persephone's attendant and substitute queen. On top of that, Hecate shares some similarities with Poseidon, especially in Hesiod's Theogeny: ". . . and to those whose business is the in the gray discomfortable sea, and who pray to Hecate and the loud crashing Earth-Shaker, easily the glorious goddess gives great catch and easily she gives it away. . .”

Another possibility is that Despoina was supposed at one point to have a symbolic value above it all and/or to be a concept rather than a physical goddess, since "Despoina" literally means "Mistress", Persephone was refferred to as Kore ("Maiden") during her time with her mother, and while we don't know for sure what is "Demeter" supposed to mean, the "'-meter" part most probably means "mother". Which suggests that Persephone, Despoina and Demeter were probably supposed to be some sort of a Maiden/Mistress/Mother trio.

Here Are a Few Things From Grew Mythology That Make Me Confused:

1. The Nemean Lion

So we know that the Nemean Lion had an indestructible skin and that Heracles managed to kill him either by bludgeoning or strangling him to death, right? Then how did he manage to make himself an armor out of the lion's skin then?

Did he flay it with an indestructible sword? Did he sewed it with the lion's claws? Did he hollowed the lion's organs and then wore it like an onesie? That would be a funny idea, actually...

Heracles being like:

Here Are A Few Things From Grew Mythology That Make Me Confused:

2. The Horse

Many people consider that the horse was the creation of Poseidon, and sometimes it is emphasized the fact that he created it in order to impress Demeter. But then there's the myth of the birth of Chiron, where Cronus literally takes the form of a stallion in order to mate with a nymph.

3. How are divine genetics actually working?

So we know that deity + deity = deity and that deity + mortal = demigod. But what about deity + nymph? There are cases in Greek Mythology where the offspring was either a deity or a demigod. Does that depend on how powerful that nymph is? There were also rare cases where deity + mortal = deity.

4. Why do you have to pay in order to cross the River Styx?

As if being the God of Riches wasn't enough, apparently Hades had to invent Capitalism as well. You can literally live an extremely virtuous life, but if someone forgets to give you a coin before burying you then it doesn’t matter. At this point I'm starting to believe that the Underworld is less of an afterlife and more like a state company: you don't enter if you have no money.

But why do you have to pay your transport in the first place? Hades is already extremely rich, so why does he need those coins in the first place? The most plausible option is that Charon is grabbing af. But what is he actually doing with those coins? Does he waste them gambling? Does he buy italian suits with them? What does he spend those money on?

I don't like to be a hater, but I'm gonna say it:

Some of the most annoying people from this planet are those who write "k" instead of "ok". Why are you so lazy that you're not even going to write a word made out of only two letters? What did you do with that precious millisecond economised from not typing the letter "o"? Huh?!

TELL ME!

The problem with most (not all) of Greek Mythology Enthusiasts from Tumblr is that each Greek God has a more or less annoying group of fans. Which also happens to be the most vocal one and tries to portray their favourite deity in a way that almost makes you despise that said deity. So you simply avoid saying: "My favourite god(s) is/are...", fearing that people might associate you with that annoying minority of fans.

Out of all rape/SA scenes from Greek Mythology the moment when Zeus leaves Persephone pregnant with Zagreus is the most disturbing one in my honest opinion. Besides the fact that parent/child incest is very rare among gods to the point where it seems that this was one of the few exceptions to them where incest "went too far", the manner in which Nonnus chose to describe the moment was completely disgusting:

Nonnus, Dionysiaca 6. 155 ff : "[Demeter hid her daughter Persephone away in a cave in Sicily to avoid the many suitors :] Ah, maiden Persephoneia! You could not find how to escape your mating! No, a Drakon (Dragon-Serpent) was your mate, when Zeus changed his face and came, rolling in many a loving coil through the dark to the corner of the maiden's chamber, and shaking his hairy chaps he lulled to sleep as he crept the eyes of those creatures of his own shape who guarded the door. He licked the girl's form gently with wooing lips. By this marriage with the heavenly Drakon, the womb of Persephone swelled with living fruit, and she bore Zagreus the horned baby, who by himself climbed upon the heavenly throne of Zeus and brandished lightning in his little hand, and newly born, lifted and carried thunderbolts in his tender fingers [i.e. Zeus marked him as his heir].

And look, I know that back then women were considered men's property (more or less, and depending on the city we're talking about as well), or that Ancient Greeks didn't have the word "rape". However, that doesn’t mean that people had absolutely no idea that there's a difference between wanting to have sex and being penetrated without consent. In Homeric Hymn To Demeter, for instance, it is emphasized to us that Persephone was screaming and crying for help and she's described as "unwilling" so that the reader could understand how horrifying the entire situation was. Meanwhile, Nonnus describes this entire scene as a voyeuristic one, not as a disturbing, traumatising experience. At this point it could be interpreted as sad porn, and the fact that he didn't have the interest to write how was Persephone feeling after being assaulted or after her own son died leads indirectly to her objectification.

At this point Nonnus seems to be an ancient coomer.

Bitches be like "Oh Hades always has to deal with his stupid youngest brother Zeus who cannot keep it in his pants."

First of all, Ancient Greeks didn't wear pants.

Secondly, Hades and Zeus are actually decent with each other. Hades isn't ashamed of asking him for help whenever he considers that there's the case, whereas Zeus trusts his eldest brother enough to give one of his daughters as his wife. There's also this whole discourse claiming that Zeus got the best and Hades got the worst, but if you actually give a second thought to it the Underworld actually has some of the greatest peaks: besides the fact that you're extremely rich all the mortals eventually become your subjects. Even poets stated that in numerous works:

Ovid, Fasti 4. 443 (trans.Boyle) (Roman poetry C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

"[Zeus speaks :] ‘My rank is no greater [than Haides]. I hold court in the sky; another rules the sea [Poseidon], and one the void [Haides].’"

Or:

Seneca, Hercules Furens 53 (trans. Miller) (Roman tragedy C1st A.D.) :

"Dis [Haides] himself, who drew a lot equal to Jove's [Zeus's]."

But if you're so desperate to give Hades a brotherly rivalry then I'm here to tell you that there's no need to erase all of Zeus' qualities (leadership skills, wisdom, long-term planning, determination, cunning etc.) and over exaggerate all of his bad actions in order to portray him as an incompetent asshole Hades always has to deal with. You could simply give Hades and Poseidon this type of dynamic instead.

Poseidon is way more impulsive, temperamental and testy than Zeus. He doesn't hesitate to show his wrath, let aside make others suffer because of it. On top of that, he's the god of the sea and earthquakes, and he's also almost as powerful as Zeus. His attributes and realm could easily represent a threat to the Underworld if he lets his anger go too far.

Take this passage from the Iliad as a relevant example:

Homer, Iliad 20. 67 ff :

"Poseidon from deep under them shuddered all the illimitable earth, the sheer heads of the mountains. And all the feet of Ida with her many waters were shaken and all her crests, and the city of Troy, the ships of the Akhaians (Achaeans). Aïdoneus [Haides], lord of the dead below, was in terror and sprang from his throne and screamed aloud, for fear that above him he who circles the land, Poseidon, might break the earth open and the houses of the dead lie open to men and immortals, ghastly and mouldering, so the very gods shudder before them; such was the crash that sounded as the gods came driving together in wrath."

Dude was freaking out in this scene. During the entire Greek Mythology he's presented as stoic and rarely frightened, but when his brother was causing a strong earthquake he was shitting himself and sucking his thumb like a baby (metaphorically). For the first and last time we see a god being vulnerable and scared by other gods in a similar way a mortal who is about to lose all of his property and belongings would be. Poseidon is pretty much capable of drowning the entire Underworld or exposing it to the Aboveworld if he wants to, so who's actually the more problematic brother? The one who can maintain his calm and control and understands better how distructive power can be, or the one whose anger was on the edge of breaking the border between the realms of the living and the dead?

What if people would stop completely changing the original personalities of the Greek Gods and create more headcanons and fanfictions based on what's actually stated (or at least what is suggested/more plausible) in the myths?

Off-topic but my chemistry teacher is obssessed with collecting lots of different things; from toys to ornamental porcelain figures. The worst part is that she named all of them and gets angry every time you forget their names. She has a bunny figurine dressed like the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland called the Pyrogallol Prince. And a white rubber mouse named Albertino. And a grey rubber mouse named Chiquitita. And a rubber duck dressed like the Statue of Independence called Petunia. And two golden camels named Friedel and Crafts. And a flower vessel named Maria. And...

I'm slowly starting to believe that Virginia Woolf was Sappho's reincarnation. In one of her books, A Room of One's On, she says that she sometimes wishes to see more strong connections between women in literature rather than conflicts. She starts asking herself how would've Cleopatra's life been like if she, instead of hating Octavia, would've been in love with her all this time.

Found the quote:

We are all women you assure me? Then I may tell you that the very next words I read were these – ‘Chloe liked Olivia …’ Do not start. Do not blush. Let us admit in the privacy of our own society that these things sometimes happen. Sometimes women do like women. ‘Chloe liked Olivia,’ I read. And then it struck me how immense a change was there. Chloe liked Olivia perhaps for the first time in literature. Cleopatra did not like Octavia. And how completely Antony and Cleopatra would have been altered had she done so! As it is, I thought, letting my mind, I am afraid, wander a little from Life’s Adventure, the whole thing is simplified, conventionalized, if one dared say it, absurdly. Cleopatra’s only feeling about Octavia is one of jealousy. Is she taller than I am? How does she do her hair? The play, perhaps, required no more. But how interesting it would have been if the relationship between the two women had been more complicated. All these relationships between women, I thought, rapidly recalling the splendid gallery of fictitious women, are too simple. So much has been left out, unattempted. And I tried to remember any case in the course of my reading where two women are represented as friends. There is an attempt at it in Diana of the Crossways. They are confidantes, of course, in Racine and the Greek tragedies. They are now and then mothers and daughters. But almost without exception they are shown in their relation to men.

The annoying part when you're a caviller like me is that you always tend to point out the headscratchers from Greek Mythology, even when it's self-explanatory that back then people didn't have the scientific knowledge that we have nowdays.

For example, you know for a matter of fact that Icarus' beeswax in his wings isn't supposed to melt if he flies higher, because higher elevations are cooler than lower elevations.

Saying that Newton was asexual is not a fact, but an opinion based on what we know about his personal life. However, one of the reasons why I consider that asexual people find him relatable is because there are lots of individuals on the Internet who either mock him or doubt that he remained a virgin for the rest of his life, despite the fact that Newton was actually very proud of himself for that.

There's this mentality that a man has to lose his virginity as soon as possible and sleep with many women (or at least visibly show his sexual desires and urges) because otherwise he would be considered a "loser". So seeing a man being proud of his lack of sexual attraction can be easily perceived as eldritch curiosity.
