"Why didn’t Uncle Mooney come?"

Cordelia lifted her head to look at Andromeda, who had just sat down next to her on the bench in front of the garden. The air was cool, and a mist hid the horizon, which was bathed in the last glow of dusk. The little girl had just turned seven.

Andromeda offered her a gentle smile, trying to hide her own sadness as she searched for the right words.

"Is it my fault?"

Cordelia was now looking at her with a frown, and the young woman was shaken by the pain she could see in her charge’s eyes. That sadness was always there in her gaze.

"No, Cordelia, it’s not your fault."

"Then why did he stop coming? And it’s my birthday, too."

The Tonks had planned an entire day for Cordelia. Since her birthday fell during the Christmas holidays, Dora was there, much to her delight. They had prepared a lunch with all her favorite foods. Later, Emmeline Vance had stopped by for tea and brought two gifts: a beautiful edition of *The Tales of Beedle the Bard* and a broomstick. The little girl had met this young woman before, who had told her she looked a lot like her mother. Not Andromeda, but Marlene. Cordelia didn’t remember her, but it made her happy, though she wasn’t sure why. People usually told her she was the spitting image of Andromeda.

Then, in the afternoon, the Weasleys arrived. Their family lived near the same village as the Tonks, and Arthur and Ted had become good friends at Hogwarts. Dora was the same age as their second son, Charlie, and they were very close. Cordelia was the same age as Ron, their youngest son, but she was also quite close with Ginny. To Cordelia’s great delight, they were going to spend the afternoon together, and the Weasleys were even staying for dinner.

Cordelia couldn’t have been happier. But there was one shadow over her day: her Uncle Mooney hadn’t come.

She should have seen it coming. He hadn’t visited her in over a month.

Uncle Mooney’s real name was Remus. Like Emmeline, he had told her that he had known her parents well, that they had been friends at Hogwarts. He said her mother had given her the middle name Mona as a tribute to his nickname. Since she had been living with the Tonks, he’d often come to spend time with her.

"Cordelia, you know..."

She was searching for the right words. Adults always seemed to struggle when answering her questions.

"When you were born, the wizarding world was going through a very hard and dark time. Many people died fighting to protect our community."

"Like my mum?"

Andromeda looked at her again and took her hand.

"Yes, like your mum and her family. They all fought against the darkness. And it’s thanks to people like them that we’re able to live in peace today."

Cordelia knew that during the war, people like Ted had been killed. Those who didn’t have “pure blood” like the Blacks.

"But your Uncle Mooney, sweetheart, he lost everything during the war. All his friends, the ones he thought of as brothers, either died or...”

Andromeda lost her words again. Cordelia guessed she didn’t know how to talk about her father, who was also her cousin. She was still young and didn’t understand everything, but she had grasped that Sirius Black was a touchy subject, and that he had met a fate worse than death—one that some people believed he deserved.

And yet Andromeda and Ted had given her a photo of him when she arrived. It was in a heart-shaped locket that opened to reveal a picture of her parents on one side and a small slip of paper on the other that read, "For our darling." Apparently, her mother had written it.

But for now, Sirius remained a topic to avoid.

"In any case, he’s a very sad young man. And when you feel so alone in the world, it’s easy to want to run away and find a place where things hurt less."

Cordelia nodded.

"Sometimes, people’s actions reflect how they feel inside, and there’s nothing we can do about it. You shouldn’t feel responsible, though. He loves you very much, and I’m sure you’ll see him again."

Cordelia studied Andromeda carefully. She was beautiful, and her face remained so kind, even though there was pain in it. Without thinking, she threw her arms around her and hugged her tightly. Andromeda let out a small laugh of relief and hugged her back.

The creak of a door echoed, and Molly Weasley appeared behind them, looking apologetic.

“Ginny’s been looking for you everywhere, Cordelia, and made me swear I’d come and tell you.”

Molly disappeared again. Cordelia giggled. She liked her—she was also a very kind woman. With Andromeda and her, Cordelia could almost imagine what it was like to have a mum.

Eventually, Cordelia stood up, and Andromeda followed. The young woman took her hand with a smile.

"Let’s go inside. We still have a birthday to celebrate."
