please be nice to the redditors coming to tumblr like actually please don't be mean just because they use reddit and I know this sounds like a joke but like actually PLEASE do not be mean, especially the r/196 fellows that's a really cool community from what I've seen

What does a Tumblr "Like" mean to you?

I'm just very personally curious. I'd love some sweet reblog action to get a good sample size, Eddie! P-p-p-p-please!

I think it's important to tell reddit refugees that the reason Tumblr has blue (and rainbow) checkmarks is not popularity, but just to make fun of twitter. You can have them too if you want, they don't do nor mean anything, they won't make you more visible, they will just show up next to your url in pretty colors.

The only way to be popular is either posting or rebloging cool stuff. Likes don't do much besides telling the author of the post "hey I like this". Nobody can see how many followers you have, your side accounts or anything that doesn't show up in your blog. People can see who you follow or what you recently liked, but there's an option in the settings to hide that info (unlike twitter, that seems to love subjecting people to public ridicule).

Btw, once or twice a year you'll find a skeleton gif or apple pizza post fucking up your dash. This is normal, we break this site for sport. We encourage you to do it too.

ok this is insane but like.. the new tumblrinas are more acclimated to the culture than some normal users. i mean it. like every single reddit refugee post has an INSANELY CLOSE like to reblog ratio and there all mutualing each other and sending each other asks and dms. like wtf. how are you better at this.

in all seriousness i think its because we welcomed them with such feral delight. like every single tumblr user individually saw the reddit refugees and were like "ok listen. we love you honey and hope you're feeling good and here are the instructions" and they did SO MUCH MORE THAN WE THOUGHT THEY WOULD!!! AND NOW ALL OF THEM ARE LIKE HAVING SO MUCH FUN AND IM SO HAPPY FOR THEM!!!!

and also not to keep going but i adore how everyone is so so emotional about this. like every single reddit refugee is like "oh my god why are you so nicee i havent felt this happy in years holy fuckkk..." and were all like "its ok!!! im so glad you are having fun you are doing such a good job yknow? youre perfect at this!!" anyways if YOURE a reddit refugee lets be mutuals

There is absolutely a point to be made about mainstream social media here.

Social media is designed to be used in a certain way. As someone who used to be on Tumblr but took a years-long break, it strikes me how this site has shifted to be more like the other social media 'frontrunners'. But that's not to say I don't think we can learn to use these platforms in a way that they weren't designed to be used. I think it's possible to cut through the popularity contest aspects and work toward real transformation and open dialogues with other people. It's hella difficult because it's basically designed to make us do the exact opposite, but at the end of the day, it's a tool like any other. And so long as we can stand even hanging out in places like these, why not utilize them to the best of our ability? I used to be very solitary on websites like these, kinda the definition of a lurker. I'm trying to break out of that bubble a little bit, and do more interacting. It's kind of awkward, and feels weird sometimes but it's also liberating to be somewhere so crowded and feel less alone than I ever have?

So let me get this straight: People are treating this site like Instagram because they associate their opinion with a post's success rather than the discussion that surrounds it, the people that add to it, and the communitarian effort towards transformation and collective discussion?

to all of the reddit refugees who have just arrived: welcome! we here at the tumblr community are always at the very most 2 minutes away from full on nuclear power plant explosion (or at least the online equivalent of that) and we scream and complain too much and the rest of the internet thinks we're dead but we're alive asf mind you, we just like to make it seem that way to keep (most of) the toxic ones out. if you abide by the rules and not be an ass then by all means, welcome! if not, 😀 🔪. door is thataway.

All you need to do is change your profile pic and post something, and congratulations you now have a valid Tumblr citizenship. also to you twitter users: you can't cancel people on tumblr. this is a website full of eccentric weirdos. We are so far away from the mainstream that tumblr struggles to find advertisers for this site. At one point tumblr was very toxic, and the toxic tumblr people would eventually move to twitter during the porn ban. Twitter + the pandemic simply gave the toxic weirdos mainstream power to ruin people's lives. politely fuck off with your toxic crap, no one here is afraid to call you out on your obvious bullshit like on twitter. We don't have anything to hide here and even if we did your impact means NOTHING here. If you try to make tumblr toxic again then you will not be welcomed here by the community. Behave.
