i'm sorry, PREGNANCY SUBTEXT??

YEAH! There’s tons of pregnancy subtext regarding the lore of OFA and AFO. I think the most obvious one is AFO’s fucked up obsession with his brother and how he believes Yoichi to simply be a “thing”. But also in the nature of Yoichi’s quirk works. It was empty before, but then AFO “filled” it with his own power (or one might even say seed) which he himself described as an action of making Yoichi “his”. of Afo has also called himself the father of OFA (so I wonder who’s the mother 🤔 Hint: It’s Yoichi) In the original Japanese, when it was described that the OFA quirk was beginning to grow and kick in Midoriya, the same kanji was used to refer to when a baby grows and kicks in its’ mother’s stomach.

Also Midoriya being the ninth and final holder, and how long does it take for a child to grow in its mother’s womb? 9 months.

There are also Greek mythology parallels such as with Cronus and Afo. Cronus, who married his sister, Rhea and had a child with her called Zeus, who then defeated his father. One for all being used right now to defeat its “father”. Another parallel is how One For All sucks the life force out of its users, the same way a child sucks the nutrients out of its mother.

Credits go to @helga-grinduil and @aaawunder for finding these parallels, thanks a lot, now this is all I think about for days.

Looking at all of the takes this chapter, and I thought about this Tokyo Ghoul quote that Eto Yoshimura wrote in her book “Dear Kafka”

"That time, so that no one (not even Father) would notice, I secretly rewrote the summary.

What cannot change can only be broken.

This is so to me, who left behind everything necessary inside the womb."

(There’s also this translation, which I think fits better into what AFO’s character, even if there are only a few words that were changed: “Then I, hidden from everyone (particularly father), stealthily rewrote the outline. Things that cannot be changed, can only be broken. From the view of I, who left all needed things in the womb.”)

And how this quote in a way truly summarizes, especially the last line, the way All for One thinks of himself and a way we, the audience, can view the way he thinks of himself. For example, the first line can be used in reference to how he changed the summary of the comic books him and Yoichi read together, in order to better fit his own wishes and desires. He doesn't accept the fact that Hero had defeated the Villain in the end, and decides to simply stop reading when the villain had won and become the Demon King, hereby rewriting the summary of the book to fit his own needs and desires. (So in that context, it should be "(not even Brother) would notice", but we'll let it slide this time for the sake of coherence) He then tries to LARP that twisted idea and that's how you end up with the current AFO, a man who thinks of himself to be the Demon King of comic books, and does what ever he possibly can to bring that reality of the summary of the comic books he rewrote.

I think the second line of the quote also is an indication of the way AFO thinks. To the core he doesn't believe that people cannot change, evidenced by the way he reacts when Lady Nagant is now fighting on the side of the heroes and when he starts losing to what he defines as a ''bunch of extras". He does not anticipate people to step outside of the lines that he drew around them and when they do go outside of those ideas and change (you know how people do) he throws tantrums and and refuses to acknowledge the fact that each person has their own autonomy and character, far beyond any neat little box he has put them into. And what he cannot change he wants to break. He wanted to break Yoichi by forcefully bestowing a quirk onto him, he wanted to break Tomura by grooming and manipulating him for the majority of his life into believing that he was simply born evil, and he wants to break all of the "extras" such as Stain, Jiro, Hawks, and Bakugou who go against the stereotypes he has placed them into, because to him these people can not change their so called "true nature", and therefore can only be broken.

Lastly, the third line, which I have been waiting impatiently to get to. I think this last line, truly shows the way AFO thinks of himself. In the chapter, All For One is shown to have cannibalized his mother as soon as he was born, and has been described as someone who simply took from others, without any regard, because he thought that anyone who could not give him *something* was useless. One could say that this is an indication of how All For One was evil from his birth, and therefore has no redeeming qualities. BUT this is My Hero Academia, good sir, where everyone is human. While framed in a horror like and grim way, it important to look past that and see the AFO/Yoichi backstory through the lens of BNHA's themes, which are all about humanizing villains and are against dehumanization in general. Imagine being newborn with a dead mother with no source of nutrition, and you have to eat her. You grow up with no one to protect your child self, no name, no sense of identity, no social security net, no one to help you differentiate between right and wrong, you are constantly being hunted for simply existing, and you are responsible for someone who is far weaker than you and have to find ways to protect yourself and him as well. So, of course you are going to grow up twisted, with disturbing ideals and cruel habits. But AFO and a lot of the MHA fandom doesn't see those factors, or refuse to acknowledge them. That's why I think this third line really displays AFO's mindset how he thinks he was evil from the womb. All things necessary to interact and engage with the world in a healthy way, such as the ability to show affection, to be caring, to be understanding, to have the methods of socialization, and have a acceptance of the autonomy of other individuals, and to be able to face and understand you own feelings in general, are abilities that have to be learned, they don't simply come to you in dream at night. But All for One does not think that, rather he refuses to humanize himself, and continues to play the role of the Demon King in the story he is trying to write, forever convinced that he was born like that from his mother's womb.

In summary, I think this quote from Eto Yoshimura really provides insight into the character AFO is and what he thinks of himself. He rewrote the summary of the comic books him and Yoichi read together, he doesn't believe that people can be changed, only be broken into what he wants them to be, and that he truly believes he has been evil from the very beginning, and any kind of "humanlike" trait he could have, was all left behind in his mother's womb.

I find it kind of funny people still don’t think All for One had a tragic backstory cause, well, he did.

I get it, though. People believe that if a character has a tragic backstory, you’re supposed to feel sympathy for THE character or that the backstory excuses that character’s actions.

It doesn’t.

All for One’s backstory IS tragic because of what All for One COULD have been.

That’s the point. Even Yoichi states it.

AFO had the greatest Quirk of all time. He could have done so much good with it, but that didn’t happen.

This was because of multiple factors:

-Born with only each other in the gutter.

-Quirk activated in the womb. His urges already manifested. The “arrogance” and believing “everything belonged to him”.

-No parental figures at all

-A tumultuous time when society was collapsing

-Hunted and looked down upon as less than human if anyone looked at them at all.

-Living in the slums

-Having to scrap, steal, and kill to survive. To eat.

-Having the first escape from all this terribleness be ratty comic books

-Having no goal, no purpose, until the comic books. Until Yoichi decided on his.

-Comic books set in a world of black & white morality. Confusing them into believing this is reality.

There’s more, but this is a quick list.

ALL of that is why All for One ended up the way he is.

Others state in the epilogue that the state of society after the war is like it was when Quirks first manifested. That it’s the same kind of world that CREATED All for One.

Yoichi says he couldn’t steer his brother down the right path, but that alone means there WERE paths.

But everything was set up perfectly to create a monster.

It IS tragic. Tragic because of what could have been.

To be deep or silly in today's MHA thought, that is truly the question. I missed yesterday, and it's late, which usually makes me philosophical, but I can't get this thought about the OFA vestiges out of my head so maybe they'll end up combined, who knows?

Lizzy's MHA Ramble of the Eve: How long could the vestiges of OFA see what Deku saw??

Like we see as early as season two that they're boogieing creepily in the background during the sports festival arc, but we don't ACTUALLY meet them until around season five, I think? The way Yoichi talks to Deku in that episode with the first flashback, it makes it seem like they've been monitoring him for a while. Plus, when Banjo meets Izuku, he talks like he's been watching the fight. So it seems like they've been watching him for a bit at the very least.

All that to say, can you imagine how unsettling that must've been for him to come to the realization that seven people have been watching every single thing he's done for the past year. I don't know about y'all, but I appreciate my privacy. Obviously Izuku is not an introvert like me, but still, I don't think anyone would appreciate knowing seven people can/potentially have been watching them every moment of the day.

Anywho, I totally think at least a few of them took to yelling at him like a dad at a football game on TV. Do you think they like, placed bets on what he'd do in certain situations? Or whether or not like, Bakugo would use a particular insult on someone? I like to imagine it'd go something like this:

Banjo: Ten bucks says Bakugo calls him a shitty nerd today.

Shimura: We literally don't have money in here, why would anyone take you up on that?

Yoichi: (Playing magical mind-scape Uno or something, idk, with Kudo or Bruce) Besides, he's getting better! Izuku's said so himself.

En: Midoriya would still sing Bakugo's praises even if he set his own mom on fire and did it while screaming "Deku is a fucking moron!!" I don't think Midoriya's opinion is ever valid when it comes to him.

Hikage:...my money's on damn extras.

Shimura: Again, we don't have money, we don't even eat, what the hell are you betting with??

Banjo: Look, there's only so long we sit ominously on our fancy little thrones waiting for him to figure shit out before we start to loose our non-existent minds, let us have this.

I don't know what this is or where it came from, but I've been thinking about Yoichi a lot lately as I compile my thoughts/rambles about him and All for One for a later post, so I think it was born of the little threads that didn't fit in anywhere else.

Today’s MHA thought is brought to you as I watch the livestream of the Wisdom Saga from Epic the Musical. Go take a listen, I’m sure it’s gonna be great.

Honestly I have no transition into today’s thought so we’re just gonna move along here we go.

Lizzy’s MHA thought of the night: Yoichi and All for One’s relationship and why I think it’s brilliant.

Let it be said, All for One is a fantastic villain. I think he’s well written in the sense that I absolutely, positively, HATE him. He is an absolute asshole and he has very little reason to be. Does he have a tragic past? Ehhh, kind of? But I would argue that he started screwing people over in the womb, so I have a hard time feeling bad for him when it kinda seems like a lot of his issues were his own doing. But that’s why I like him, because he doesn’t have that super sympathetic backstory and he doesn’t have much of a reason to be an asshole other than “I want to win and see people suffer :D”. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a sympathetic villain (see my posts on Touya and Toga) but I also love to see a villain that is just evil for the sake of being evil.

However, I don’t doubt that he probably has some kind of personality disorder, plus he did have to entirely raise himself, and if we pile the theory that quirks influence personality on top of it, you don’t get a pretty picture. It’s an interesting look at the nature vs. nurture debate in a world like this. It was a perfect storm of genetics and circumstances that made All for One, a terrible turn of events to be sure.

And yet, despite being twins, Yoichi doesn’t turn into a psychopathic maniac. It’s honestly wild, and a kind of psychological circumstance that fascinates me. And, let's be honest, it's not out of the realm of possibility that AFO is partially to thank for that. After all, he took care of Yoichi like, straight out of the womb. However, what gets me more is their relationship.

It’s messy, it’s toxic, and it’s a little weird, but it’s so unique because we rarely see it done like this. It’s codependency at its worst, more so on All for One’s side, though he’d never admit that.

It really begs the question, why? Why was All for One SO obsessed with his brother? By all accounts, his brother only ever stood in his way and screwed with his plans. He was a hindrance, even when they were kids, so why keep him around?

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure. I think a part of it is Psychological Reactance (which I talk a bit about in my post on Toga), basically, it’s a common reaction in humans when you tell them they can’t do or have something. It’s often rooted in control, we don’t like to loose control of anything, and so we automatically act out to make sure our control is preserved. It’s emotional and behavioral, and we know All for One LOVES his control just as much as he loves his quirks.

And you know what else he loved? He loved Yoichi, and in a way he could never love anyone else. And maybe Yoichi loved him too, I think he did, but he loved him enough to tell him he was utterly wrong even when his brother wouldn’t listen. So, here’s this one thing he genuinely doesn’t want to loose because it’s the one thing he can never replace and it wants to leave?? Excuse???

Here’s what I think, I think Yoichi was the only thing he ever really lost control of.

Yes, I think his twisted sense of love had a part in him chasing his brother across generations, but I also think All for One could not handle the idea that he lost control of something he actually cared about.

We see in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs that our most basic needs above physical are relational. Family, friends, safety, belonging, those aren’t things that are plentiful when you’re a dictator. Yoichi was there with him from the beginning, he fulfilled that need in some capacity.

We’re all afraid of losing things, especially those we love the most, it’s human nature. No matter how powerful you are, you can’t substantiate real human connection.

The day All for One lost Yoichi was the day he lost the only genuine relationship he had, it’s not surprising he spent the next few centuries trying to get it back.

I had fun with that one! Imma do one one Yoichi one of these days, because I love him and he deserves it, but for now I’m gonna go enjoy the Wisdom Saga and plan out a little Yoichi one shot I’ve had bouncing around in my head for a while.

An Exercise In Futility

(This is a snippet of a little one-shot I've been working on between assignments about Yoichi and AFO because I've been inspired by several works about them recently. It's set in a semi-alternate world where Yoichi has a terminal lung condition and hasn't quite realized that his brother is a complete psychopath on the rise to power yet. They are brothers, but AFO (named Hisashi here because I got tired of just writing him as 'brother') is a few years older than Yoichi in this piece. I don't think there are any necessary warnings yet, maybe just talk of terminal illness and potential death, but there will be later if I post the rest of it. So, for now, enjoy!)

...

Futility was a funny word, one Yoichi was well acquainted with, even at the ripe age of sixteen.

Maybe that was because it was one his brother, Hisashi, had been fond of. He had a habit of slipping it into half of the monologues he went on, the ones that made Yoichi’s eyes glaze over and his mind wander. When he was younger, he used to keep count of how many times his brother slipped it into conversation. He stopped as soon as he reached the two hundreds and realized the word wasn’t going anywhere like some of the others had.

“It’s just an exercise in futility, brother,” He’d say. “Look at them, they don’t realize how useless their struggling is.”

And then Yoichi would smile and nod as he sat on the edge of his brother’s massive desk and kicked his legs, wondering if he’d ever be tall enough to reach the floor. He’d learned growing up with Hisashi that the man rarely wanted his actual opinion, just an ear to listen as he ranted about the state of the world. Yoichi was good at that. It was the least he could do for his older brother, his sole caretaker after all.

But more likely than that, it was because he heard it a lot at his practitioner’s office, not to mention at the plethora of specialists he’d been dragged to over the years. It was funny, his brother never seemed to like it coming out of anyone else’s mouth but his own. The look on his face when the doctors told him over and over again that there wasn’t anything that could be done to cure Yoichi, just make him comfortable, wasn't an expression Yoichi wasn’t particularly fond if.

"It's pointless, I'm afraid." Was how one unfortunate doctor had put it. His brother had immediately dragged him out of the office, glaring the trembling doctor over his shoulder. Apparently, the specialist had gotten his medical license revoked soon after and Yoichi never saw him again.

After that, he’d learned to tune the medical staff out too, staring at the floor as he swung his socked feet back and forth over the edge of the exam table like he did at home as his brother took in every word the medical professionals spat at him.

To be honest, he saw the visits as more of a formality than anything these days. For all his talk of futility and his supposed knowledge of the subject, Yoichi’s brother really didn’t seem to comprehend it when it came to Yoichi’s condition. He was dying, all the quirks in the world couldn’t prevent that, but he just didn’t seem to get it. It was almost like he expected Yoichi to live forever, which was ridiculous even for him. Still, the way he spoke of the future made it seem like he saw himself at the top of the world, with his sickly little brother at his side until time came to a stop and the world just...ceased to exist.

But, based on Hisashi's current attitude, he'd probably expect he could just change that with the snap of his fingers too.

It was exhausting, honestly, but at least with his brother getting busier and busier at the office he’d been able to wheedle his way into going by himself–and by that he meant getting dropped off at the hospital and wandering the halls for an hour while his appointment was supposedly happening, then going to the receptionist and setting up a “follow-up” appointment, which he’d cancel as soon as he’d shown his brother the card. A part of him felt kinda guilty for the deception, but the rest of him was just tired of being poked and prodded every two weeks before being told the same things over and over again.

And that’s where he was today, making his slow but steady laps around the hospital while he waited for his “appointment” to finish and he could go home.

An Exercise in Futility (Part 2)

Not entire sure where I plan to go with this, but the pen calls to me and who am I to deny her?

(Part One)

Some days Yoichi felt good enough to take the stairs, but unfortunately the awkward shuffling alone was already proving too much. After the second time around, he’d been forced to plop down in one of the puffy, plastic chairs and catch his breath. In his mind, he could hear his brother scolding him for pushing himself, but he knew his struggles probably had more to do with the fact he’d neglected his morning medications and therapies. Soft coughs rocked his chest, and with a trembling hand he reached up to rub it.

To be fair, he had fully intended on continuing any prescribed treatments at home when he’d started skipping appointments–it was one of the only ways he could convince himself to go through with the lies–but after a few weeks the piles of pills and heavy masks had seemed less and less appealing.

So he’d just…stopped.

Thankfully, his brother hadn’t seemed to notice yet. The last thing he wanted was another freak out and hospital stay like he’d had earlier in the year. The scars on his chest still ached whenever he thought of the incident, urging him to rub over the freshly healed marks. Hisashi hated that particular habit of his, resorting to physically pulling his hand away whenever he did it within view of the other. Yoichi was never sure why the scars seemed to bother Hisashi more than they did him, but he’d stopped wearing the low cut, loose shirts he’d favored after he caught his brother staring at the thin, white marks with that look on his face one too many times.

Yoichi didn’t remember much of the most recent scare. He’d been in bed when it’d started, chest aching as it often did, and he’d gotten up to get some water. The next thing he knew, the toilet was painted a deep shade of red and Hisashi was at his side, gripping him like if he let him go he’d just disappear as he screamed through the manor. The rest of it was a blur, but the several months he’d spent in the hospital afterwards were burned into his mind forevermore. The wailing machines, the constant surveillance, and the lack of freedom to when pee by himself made him shutter more than the pain ever did.

He’d never say it to anyone out loud–least of all Hisashi–but after the last incident, he’d told himself that if it were to happen again he’d just let himself go.

Yoichi didn’t want to die, per say, but he didn’t want to live either, especially not like that.

Being sick was exhausting.

His watch buzzed, drawing him from his thoughts. Lifting it, he found Hisashi’s name displayed across its face.

The car is waiting outside when you’re done, don’t forget to have the receptionist give you a copy of the notes from today.

Yoichi smiled wryly, sending a little thumbs up and an “almost done!” for good measure. He sat for another minute or two before easing himself up from the chair and shuffling over to where his favorite nurse, Helga, sat behind her station. She smiled as he approached, grabbing a pen out of its holder, an appointment card at the ready. He smiled back, giving a half-hearted wave.

“How’s my favorite nurse today?” He rasped, leaning against the edge of the station for support.

Helga giggled. For a seasoned nurse well into her career, she had the laugh of a middle-schooler who’d been approached by her crush. “Yoichi, baby! It’s good to see you! How’re you feelin’? Your appointment go okay? You here for my autograph again?”

“Sure am,” he quipped, “got the pen ready for me?”

She nodded, “you know I do. Whatcha got for me today?”

“November 18th, at 2PM.” He replied easily.

“You got it.” She was already neatly transcribing the information onto the little piece of cardstock. “I keep telling you the lovely lads and ladies over in Dr. Millard’s office would be happy to write this down for you, baby, you just gotta ask when you make the appointment.”

“Sure, if I actually made an appointment, I’m sure they would.” He thought to himself, instead choosing to say. “Yeah, but then I wouldn’t have a reason to come see you, would I?”

“You don’t need a reason to see me, baby, you know that! I’m always happy to say hello to my favorite patient.” She hummed, neatly signing the bottom of the card with a little flourish and a smiley face. “But there you go, I’ll see you in two weeks, okay? Oh, well, hm, no maybe I won’t…”

Yoichi’s heart jumped a little, but he swallowed his panic and smiled. “Oh? Why not?”

“My actual baby is getting married! We’re traveling up north for the wedding, so I’ll be out for a few weeks, but like I said, everyone else would be more than happy to help you!”

Yoichi nodded, pulling his lips into a little smile as he resisted the urge to sigh. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if Helga left for good. There was only so long he could use the “I lost my reminder card” excuse with the other staff. Eventually, someone would look him up in the system and realize that his last actual appointment was six months ago and he’d canceled every single one since. Then they’d call Hisashi, since his older brother was technically his legal guardian, and all hell would break loose.

Yoichi couldn’t risk that, he was already pretty sure his brother was starting to suspect something–Hisashi always had been frustratingly good at reading him–so Yoichi had to make sure he had no reason to do so. Next time he’d have to bite the bullet and actually schedule a real appointment, then cancel it as soon as he’d opened the reminder text in view of his brother. That was usually enough to quell any suspicions Hisashi had.

He thanked Helga, wishing her the best and congratulating her on her kid’s marriage before making his way down to the ground floor and out the door.
