please please please please

hey my besties who live in red states: id like you to go out and vote anyway.

yeah, the electoral college means your vote doesn't count unless you win your state. it's a terrible undemocratic bullshit system. it's not going to change before this election,* so there isn't much point in complaining about it right now.

if you hold the belief that there's no point in voting because your voice will just be downed out by a chorus of bigotry- chances are other people in your state feel the same way. and because those people are not voting, it's impossible to know how many of you there are. the reason it's important to vote EVEN WHEN YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE is to make this number public.

when the minority in a state still goes out to vote:

- other members of the minority party know they aren't alone in their state. this encourages MORE people to vote in the next election

- the majority candidates are forced to divert some of their campaign resources away from swing states to secure a state they were already going to win

- the minority candidates are encouraged to spend some time campaigning in your state instead of abandoning it as a lost cause

- assuming you also vote in local elections, the minority is more likely to win representatives in the house

- who knows there might be so many of you that you fucking flip it by mistake

there has been a 700% increase in new daily voter registrations in the few days since Biden dropped out of the race.

thousands of people are deciding, right now, that voting is worth it. some of them live in your state. there is going to be a spike in blue votes across the country. this election is going to have the youngest voter turnout in history. this is the best possible time to join them. join us.

what have you got to lose? one afternoon?

Anti-voting rhetoric will be the death of the left. Literally.

Not a single fucking Republican voted to protect roe. It was fucking overturned in the first place bc trump got three Supreme Court appointments.

Every fucking thing wrong in this country is almost certainly the result of Republicans being in power. In 2020, Texas cut half of the polling places in black neighborhoods, and doubled them in white ones, regardless of population. It was Republicans bitching about mail in voting, and constantly, constantly fearmonger about voter fraud. Literally, their platform is about making civil rights harder to practice.

Would you like to know why? It’s because Republican politicians know better than anyone that higher voter participation means higher republican loss.

But what do I see from the online left, champions of the oppressed?

“Voting doesn’t do anything, the parties are the same, the system is rigged, etc, etc”

Don’t sit here and tell me you give a fuck about marginalized people if you aren’t ready to march your ass to the voting booth and vote out the party actively stripping their rights away.

Protest, donate, community build, unionize, and vote, vote, vote.

By the time direct action is the only option, it will be too fucking late.

There are 8 years of new voters since Trump took the White House in 2016. That is the generation that will change the world.

Find them. Inspire them. Tell them their vote matters and is important.

"the world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing." - attributed to Albert Einstein

(American politics time- not usually something I post, so apologies to everyone in every other country, I'm talking about something that only applies to ~4.3% of the world's population)

remember that refusing to vote means refusing to have a voice in the change. does that suck when the current candidates are, for Palestine, Bad and Much Worse? YES, but to CHANGE the system, we must first work WITH it. we're not going to be able to improve the situation if we don't get people representing our concerns in Congress.

genocide is wrong. Israel shouldn't get military funding from the US. these two things many of us can agree on, and are simple to explain to others. if you want to be an activist for Palestine, get people elected who CARE about them. is that a perfect solution? no. but the presence of hard choices doesn't mean our own character is poor, it means the situation itself is. context is so fucking important- think: who is spreading information about refusing to vote for a Democrat in November? why might people want you to do that?

remember: all the activism for Palestine in the US has amounted to something. the US has been so tied to Israel since its conception and american military leaders consider them an incredibly important ally. progress does not occur in a vacuum, you must put it in context

our UN reps finally backed a ceasefire, Sen. Schumer (who went to college with Netanyahu, was his main lobbyist in the US government, and happens to be the highest ranking Jewish person in the US) publicly condemned the genocide in Gaza and called for a new vote in Israel, and Biden has spoken out against the government of Israel.

is it late? yes. but it is not too late. there are still Palestinians fighting for their country. Israel has not taken Rafah yet. we can not back down now just because of the past failures of our leaders. are their previous actions unforgivable? you decide. how? with your vote. throw them out of office.

not all of us can spend our time to help via activism. and that doesn't make you a bad person. find out how to help the world in the way you can. put on your oxygen mask first, then help others. you can help so many more people when you yourself are safe.

the people who should carry guilt are those with money sitting in vaults, in yachts, in houses they'll never live in. the representatives and party leaders who decided they cared more about the status quo than saving millions of lives. Hamas who, in committing mass murder and kidnapping, gave Israel the last push to wage major war with the backing of other countries.

many of you reading this are 19 and under, many are in your 20s. remember, you must not burn yourself out now. the best ally you can be for people persecuted and killed is an ally for a lifetime. get out there and live

[ if this is one of dozens of posts you've read, please put your phone down for 20 seconds- just 20 seconds, the video was longer than that- and breathe with your eyes closed ]

I'm just going to leave this here, because this woman said what I've been trying to articulate for ages much more effectively and succinctly than I've been able to

Imo i think theres a clear winner here

ok looks like we're gonna be doing the same thing, different verse, now that it's Kamala Harris on the Dem ticket instead of Joe Biden.

friendly reminder that one of these 2 people is getting elected. there's not a magical 3rd party person who's mystical and perfectly progressive who is gonna come out of the woodwork and save us. not voting or voting 3rd party isn't a "protest," it's capitulation. so let's do a comparison:

On Gaza:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

I forgot to add to this that Trump also stated he will deport any non-citizen who protests the war in Gaza.

On LGBTQ+ rights:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

On criminal justice:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

On reproductive rights:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

On the border:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

In case you don't believe me re: the last Trump point.

On voting rights:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

On climate change:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

On the working class:

Ok Looks Like We're Gonna Be Doing The Same Thing, Different Verse, Now That It's Kamala Harris On The

Should 16 year olds be allowed to vote?

Pros:

young ppl will have a voice earlier on

they’ll be empowered + encouraged to change their communities

the voices with the most knowledge about what people need will be elevated.

foster responsibility

Cons:

teens are too young to understand impact of their actions.

aren’t knowledgable or aware of political issues

too much pressure put on young shoulders.

those who are too immature could misrepresent people’s needs.

I say yes! More 16-year-olds than you would think, myself included, are ready and willing to make a difference. Some kids might be too immature for the vote, but frankly, so are some adults. We’re smart; we can handle it.  After all, we’ve only got a couple more years before adulthood comes along, so why not start preparing in the meantime? If we’re properly informed and coached by adults, we will make the right choices. Age doesn’t determine a person’s intelligence, maturity, or sense of responsibility.

I really, really want to do something, something more than join a few clubs or run a blog. I want to help my community. I want to have an impact on the legislation that determines my future, to make the adults sitting indoors deciding my fate hear me. Adults don’t realize how much power they have - if I could vote.… man, you have no idea the things I’d make happen.

the problem with not voting in order to send the message that you hate all the candidates and the entire system and therefore refuse to participate is that it's completely indistinguishable, as a signal, from not bothering to vote because you think the system is great and all the candidates are great and you'd be fine with any of them. so you might want to rethink the strategy there

Lotta people in the notes refuse to understand. Maybe you'll survive if the lesser evil loses and the greater evil takes over, and you can afford to turn your nose up at both candidates. A lot of people will not survive, however. Will the lesser evil still do evil? Yes. That sucks. But while their actions will kill x number of people, the greater evil will kill x + y. It MATTERS. That y group deserves to fucking survive, y'all. YOU can decide to act on their behalf. When you're done voting, put your energy into destroying "first past the post" voting systems. Fight for a ranked choice alternative. Then, your third parties have a chance. But until then, save the y group, for fuck's sake.

Listen, I'm not saying that not liking either candidate in an election and believing "both parties are the same" is grounds to not vote at all. I'm aware that harm reduction is a very serious issue and that throwing caution to the wind conveys a sort of privilege-driven apathy towards society.

That being said, the response of leftists towards people who believe that both parties are the same attempting to shame them for feeling this way is always so funny to me, because they'll say something akin to:

"Saying both parties are the same would've been profound 30 years ago, but now it just shows that you're out of touch."

not realizing the incredibly fitting irony in the fact that in the same way those who don't vote maintain the status quo by not taking action, they themselves are also contributing to it by actively playing into a system that always makes you choose the "lesser of two evils" rather than completely dismantling it and starting from scratch.

What's even more is the fact that these same leftists will always use the argument of:

"Politicians wouldn't try to take away voting rights if voting didn't do anything" as if the Electoral College and gerrymandering don't exist which stand squarely in the way of actual democracy, and as if both of these aren't just different forms of control that they've been duped into believing have any legitimate purpose behind them.

Fittingly, you'll find that their passion towards abolishing the Electoral College seems to be much quieter as well as their focus on participating and spreading awareness of local and state elections. Instances in which voting has a more immediate effect.

At the end of the day, while marginalized people will not be placed in immediate danger by choosing the "lesser of two evils", they will never truly be protected. Their fates will forever be hanging in the balance as if it were purgatory, never truly feeling secure because there will always be a potential countdown to when your existence expires.

The so-called "lesser of two evils" will not given them protection as much as it will continue to use them as a means of promoting an inauthentic message of progression and acceptance that the public overtime will come to accept as reality.

Oh, and for those leftists who are going to inevitably tell me:

"If you don't see the difference between either party then I don't know what to tell you."

Let it be known, not once did I ever say they stood for the same things, nor that you shouldn't fight against the worse reality. All I'm simply asking is, why have you become complacent with only two options, and if you are in fact not content with this, what are you doing to fix this?

Buddy, when racist cunts illegally prevented me from registering to vote by just refusing to accept my papers, I PROMISE YOU shitty guilt trip memes about my inability to vote made everything worse.

You know what ACTUALLY helped?

More than every passive aggressive shit for brains on this website telling me I deserve to me racially harassed for not giving Democrats my soul?

A fucking email from a fucking HERBS AND SPICES STORE that unlike you wretched cunts ACTUALLY HAD VOTER REGISTRATION HELPLINES IN IT.

Every time one of you godforsaken freaks tells me to 'get out and vote' like its cutely trivial and didn't take months of desperate phone calls just to register (IF my registration even WORKED THIS TIME).

If you, like me, are struggling with registration or poll access, try contacting your STATE board of elections.

Request that they send you TWO copies of their registration guidelines. Collect any documents listed in them.

Then, contact your LOCAL board. Tell them you would like to register IN PERSON IF POSSIBLE.

Bring your documents and the two copies of the guideline AND a working cell phone.

If you get ANY trouble AT ALL tell the local person you will call the state board to confirm their registration requirements. Be polite, but do not leave. Put the phone on speaker.

Most of the time, the local person who is doing Actual Serious Federal And State Crimes will give up at that point. If not, the person at the state board will generally outrank and overrule the local one.

Make a note of the names of both the local and state official.

Then, and this is the most important part:

CONFIRM YOUR REGISTRATION WAS FILED.

Confirm You Are Registered to Vote | USAGov
usa.gov
Check your voter registration status to confirm that you’re able to vote in the next election. If you’re an active voter, you should not hav

It may take a day or two for your registration to appear.

Unfortunately, if it's been a week, you're going to have to repeat the process.

Take the names you noted previously, and contact the state board again. Report that these people denied you registration on this day, in spite of you providing these documents, then list all the required papers you collected.

The person at the state SHOULD be able to direct you from there, but the process varies hugely by state.

Good luck to you all.

For all of my US followers for whom general public official election day is coming up (Nov. 7th) PLEASE do not become so disillusioned with the current state of higher power politicians that you skip out on voting for local offices; off year and local elections are already critically unemphasized but these are the people who have the most direct power over jails, police, school curriculum, etc. Do not let your grief be weaponized as a distraction from also continuing to fight police brutality, queer and bipoc censorship in schools, bodily autonomy, housing inequality, etc, on the smaller scale battlefields where every vote truly does count

Right-Wing Activists Have A Big Target This Year— And It Could Impact The Elections
HuffPost
Election officials and voting rights experts are worried about the impact on 2024.

“I have yet to find one of them that I felt was credible enough for me to actually file documentation for that voter,” he said. “So as a good steward for voter registration, which is what I’m charged with doing, I should not act upon stuff that is proven to be not credible.

”This year, election officials like Wilcox have spent valuable time sorting through pages of these mass voter challenges. And voting rights advocates worry that the trend could result in eligible voters being removed from the rolls, or from accommodations like being on lists to automatically receive ballots in the mail.

. . .

But experts and election officials who spoke to HuffPost said voters should confirm their registration status now — before the November election season heats up — just to be safe.

. . .

The month following that election, True the Vote teamed up with Georgia Republicans to challenge the eligibility of more than 364,000 voters in the state, based in part on U.S. Postal Service address-change data.

. . .

Some voters only found out their registrations had been challenged when they didn’t receive requested ballots in the mail for Georgia’s January 2021 U.S. Senate run-off election. Ultimately — after courts stepped in — the vast majority of these challenges were rejected. True the Vote’s list “utterly lacked reliability” and “verge[d] on recklessness,” a federal judge later observed.

. . .

At least one Georgia county has signed a contract to use the software, and in May, the director of the Florida Division of Elections sent county officials a list of 10,000 names to review that a local “concerned citizen” had generated with EagleAI.

. . .

Other efforts are state-based, including the “Pigpen Project” in Nevada and “Soles to the Rolls” in Michigan. Some even go so far as to go door to door to ask voters to confirm their information, raising concerns about intimidation. The Republican Party is also involved in the effort — in June, a federal judge rejected a GOP lawsuit alleging Nevada officials had failed to properly maintain voter rolls. (The GOP’s data was “highly flawed,” the state said.) A similar suit, against the state of Michigan, is ongoing.

And some states have made mass challenges even easier. In Georgia, S.B. 202, passed in 2021, allowed anyone to formally challenge an unlimited number of registrations, and S.B. 189, passed this year, requires voters to defend their registration against even frivolous challenges, sometimes at in-person hearings. It faces a lawsuit.

More at the link. Check your registration!
