Hello all! Here I have a fic to celebrate the lovely @crowley-stole-my-ineffable-heart ‘s 4K followers. Congratulations!!! My prompt was “I’ve fallen in love for the first time, and this time I know it’s for real.” I chose Roger, my baby.

Summary: you fell in love and never fell out.

September 5th, 1958
Summer was fading into fall, the leaves slowly losing their life and warning of the dreaded beginning of second grade and a new school. At the very least, however, you had sort of made friends. They were a bit mean and demanded the chocolate biscuits your mother packed for you. But you’d been included in a group, and that’s what was important. You had to focus on self-preservation, and if that meant sacrificing a few cookies, then that’s what you were going to do.
“I bet you can’t do it, Y/N! The swing’s going too high for you to jump!”
Your hands were clammy where they clutched the metal chains of the swing, and your legs were beginning to ache from how long you had been pumping them. You looked up at the rustling leaves stretching over the little playground, casting shadows over the little clique in front of you.
“It’s really high, Maya…” you began, trying to keep the tremor out of your voice.
“You’re a second grader, not a kindergarten baby. Are you too scared to jump?” Maya, the leader of the third graders who had decided to pull you into their little group, put her hands on her hips and watched you expectantly.
You swung for a few moments longer, then slid off, holding your arms in front of you.
There was a split second when you thought you might actually be okay, with the wind kissing your face and the summer sun warming your arms.
Then you hit the gravel and you couldn’t help the tears that leaked out your eyes or the cry of pain as the rocks scraped your knees and cut the heels of your hands. You curled up and tucked in your legs, not even trying to choke back a sob.
