just in case anyone missed this in the news or maybe not in the loop, Disney is currently refusing to meet with or acknowledge the newly formed animation production workers union that just voted to join IASTE and become an official part of TAG, the animators and animation artists guild

production workers across all studios are currently voting to be recognized for their hard work and invaluable skill at keeping these productions running, but studios are refusing to meet with them to let them negotiate deals or even exist

as someone who works in animation as a designer i know i wouldn't be able to do my job at all without any of my production workers. they are the incredibly hard working people who oversee pretty much everything in animation. they make sure everything is running on time, that schedules are being followed, they have to know pretty much every single word of the scripts and beats from the storyboards to make sure nothing is missed, and most importantly, they make sure artists are being taken care of and not overworked. they really are the unsung heroes of the animation world

production workers are also by far the most exploited workers in animation currently. they make about a fraction of what artists make for just as much work put in, and currently have no agreement for health coverage or other benefits that artists protected by the union are guaranteed

BUT! there is some good news. right now there's a petition on IATSE's website that has over 80,000 signatures currently addressed to disney leadership to do the right thing and meet with this new union and recognized their vote to form. it still needs roughly 21,000 signatures and only takes a minute to sign! anyone with a zip or postal code can sign, meaning both US and Canadian residents can sign and help this union get the deal it deserves!!

In the midst of one of the hottest summers ever, we finally come to the realization that we are tired of sweltering in the head of worker oppression, and its time to do something about it.

Overworked and Underpaid, VFX Workers Vote to Unionize at Marvel
Vulture
On Monday, a group of more than 50 on-set employees filed a petition for an election to be represented by IATSE.
A screenshot of the linked article, reading:

This marks the first time visual-effects professionals have banded together to demand the same rights, wage protections, and professional watchdog oversight enjoyed by workers in almost every other segment of the entertainment industry. The supermajority of Marvel’s 52-member on-set production crew signed authorization cards to indicate they wish to be represented by the powerful labor union representing some 170,000 artisans, technicians, stagehands, and craftspeople across TV, film, and live theater in the United States and Canada.

“For almost half a century, workers in the visual-effects industry have been denied the same protections and benefits their coworkers and crewmates have relied upon since the beginning of the Hollywood film industry,” VFX organizer for IATSE Mark Patch said in a statement. “This is a historic first step for VFX workers coming together with a collective voice demanding respect for what we do.” End screenshot.
Another screenshot, reading:
Leading off the collective-bargaining push with Marvel’s on-set VFX specialists — data wranglers, production managers, witness camera operators, and assistants employed on such MCU series as Loki and Daredevil: Born Again, as opposed to the people supplying visual effects in postproduction — arrives as no accident. Thanks to the studio’s fire hose of movie and TV series output (it will oversee the release of five movies and four shows in 2023 alone), Marvel is regarded in VFX circles as the industry’s biggest “bully,” with the capacity to flood effects houses with more work than they know what to do with or ruin careers and standings of those who do not live up to Marvel’s sky-high expectations.

End screenshot.
A final screenshot, reading:
Hence, as the thinking goes, securing union recognition for a relatively small yet high-profile group of Marvel’s so-called “production-side” professionals would stand as proof of concept for the overall viability of an industry-wide unionization push. Production-side unity would lead to solidarity at postproduction houses, which would then, in turn, unionize one by one, leading to an inevitable tipping point. The template for this sort of thing was set in the animation world last February when production workers for Adult Swim’s Rick & Morty and Hulu’s Solar Opposites filed a petition with the NLRB for a union election, sparking a new wave of unionization for workers throughout the animation industry by becoming the first to be represented by the IATSE-affiliated Animation Guild. Soon after, workers at the Los Angeles branch of the award-winning production house Titmouse joined the guild to begin collective bargaining for their first union contract. And those efforts ultimately compelled a coalition of production workers on the shows American Dad, Family Guy, and The Simpsons to also unionize under the Animation Guild, teeing up new collective-bargaining negotiations for increased benefits with 20th Television Animation last summer.

End screenshot.

TREE LAW!!!!

Quick shoutout to the good people at @UniversalPics for trimming the trees that gave our picket line shade right before a 90+ degree week. pic.twitter.com/aZvvPYQ23i

— Chris Stephens (@ChrisStephensMD) July 17, 2023
Whoever "trimmed" those trees may have just killed a bunch of trees on city property, that weren't theirs to trim. Get ready for a fine and sanctions.

— Steven Burke (@SteveBurke2000) July 17, 2023
It so needs to be looked into. If they’ve illegally butchered these trees, they will have to replace them. Hoping LA requires trees of similar age and size. I know it’s nothing to the studios. But still.

— pro-union (@daisybug42) July 17, 2023
My city requires similar age and size. I'm sure LA requires it as well. The replacements are going to cost a small fortune.

Not only did I complain on LA's 311 about this but I do happen to know an entertainment reporter over at the LA Times. I just contacted her about this. Welcome to my world. I have a very big vast network of people.

STRIKE FOR PALESTINE FROM JUNE 16TH TO JUNE 22ND

Listen up guys! A strike for palestine is being held soon, and there's a lot you can do to help, like signing petitions, donating to gofundmes and boycotting as mentioned above. However please remember if you aren't able to do certain things during the strike like call off of work/school, focus on doing other things to help! Doing something is better than nothing.

(Note: The strike ends on June 23rd after June 22nd not on the day of)

The. Deal. Is. So. Good.

Summary of the 2023 WGA MBA
wgacontract2023.org
The following is a summary of the deal terms for the 2023 MBA. It is a simplified version of the Memorandum of Agreement (“MOA”), which cont

Couldn't get the link to the side-by-side of the WGA offer, the AMPTP counter offer from May, and the final deal, because it's a document to download and too many pictures to take for this post that probably wouldn't be legible, but it's in this tweet (click the link below the tweet to go to said tweet):

Just look at these terms side-by-side with the original ask. Freaking amazing. A tremendous accomplishment, we bow before the awesome might of the WGA Negotiating Committee! https://t.co/4b2Ilw6FEP

— David H. Steinberg (@DavidHSteinberg) September 27, 2023
The WGA negotiating committee members are unpaid. They are volunteers. They did that work out of a sense of duty and as an act of service.

And they saved the fucking town.

Of the 13 or 14 WGA contracts I’ve seen in the course of my career, this one, like, blows my mind. Outstanding work, everyone. I wish I could give each one of you a big poutine in gratitude.

— Rene Balcer (@ReneBalcer) September 27, 2023
Even though this is a small percentage of the membership, we don't want to undersell this, The comedy variety NegComm members went to the fucking wall to get this. I am not exaggerating to say that handful of people saved this field of writing as a career. https://t.co/ndm4gK0xJN

— John Rogers (@jonrog1) September 27, 2023
A lot of deserved love for NegComm right now, but let’s give it up for the captains and lot coordinators. Your relentless efforts to keep those picket lines full for all 148 days 100% rattled the shit out of the companies. You are resolve incarnate.

— John Rogers (@jonrog1) September 27, 2023
These are essential protections that the companies told us, to our faces, that they would NEVER give us. But because of our solidarity, because they literally cannot make a dollar without us, they bent, then broke, and gave us what we deserve. WE WON.

— Adam Conover (@adamconover) September 27, 2023
I just wanna say a special and hearty “you were wrong” to the man who yelled at me, to tears, at someone’s wedding, that minimum room size was impossible.

He was fucking wrong. And we were fucking right.

— Andra (on-druh) Whipple (@whipsical) September 27, 2023
Reading through the WGA deal now…

Holy **fucking** shit.

We just… saved this profession?

— James Is ON STRIKE (@ScriptsByJames) September 27, 2023
I'll see you all on the picket lines for SAG-AFTRA this week, right people? We're not done until we're ALL done.

— John Rogers (@jonrog1) September 27, 2023

Don't forget, the fight isn't over for SAG-AFTRA and next year, contracts are up again for IATSE, including The Animation Guild.

If you're a fan of movies, film, and animation, keep helping the guilds fight the good fight!

Also, please support the other unions that are out their now fighting their own fights including Amazon workers, Local 11 in LA, and Flight Attendants!

And of course, big thanks to strike hero Drew Carey for paying for probably THOUSANDS of meals for striking writers in LA these past five months.

Congratulations WGA and Pre-WGA for your amazing wins with this contract!

UPS Has Reached An Agreement With The Teamsters Union To Avert A Strike. These Are The Highlights Of

UPS has reached an agreement with the Teamsters union to avert a strike. These are the highlights of the tentative 2023-2028 agreement:

Historic wage increases. Existing full- and part-time UPS Teamsters will get $2.75 more per hour in 2023, and $7.50 more per hour over the length of the contract.

Existing part-timers will be raised up to no less than $21 per hour immediately, and part-time seniority workers earning more under a market rate adjustment would still receive all new general wage increases.

General wage increases for part-time workers will be double the amount obtained in the previous UPS Teamsters contract — and existing part-time workers will receive a 48 percent average total wage increase over the next five years.

Wage increases for full-timers will keep UPS Teamsters the highest paid delivery drivers in the nation, improving their average top rate to $49 per hour.

Current UPS Teamsters working part-time would receive longevity wage increases of up to $1.50 per hour on top of new hourly raises, compounding their earnings.

New part-time hires at UPS would start at $21 per hour and advance to $23 per hour.

All UPS Teamster drivers classified as 22.4s would be reclassified immediately to Regular Package Car Drivers and placed into seniority, ending the unfair two-tier wage system at UPS.

Safety and health protections, including vehicle air conditioning and cargo ventilation. UPS will equip in-cab A/C in all larger delivery vehicles, sprinter vans, and package cars purchased after Jan. 1, 2024. All cars get two fans and air induction vents in the cargo compartments.

All UPS Teamsters would receive Martin Luther King Day as a full holiday for the first time.

No more forced overtime on Teamster drivers’ days off. Drivers would keep one of two workweek schedules and could not be forced into overtime on scheduled off-days.

UPS Teamster part-timers will have priority to perform all seasonal support work using their own vehicles with a locked-in eight-hour guarantee. For the first time, seasonal work will be contained to five weeks only from November-December.

The creation of 7,500 new full-time Teamster jobs at UPS and the fulfillment of 22,500 open positions, establishing more opportunities through the life of the agreement for part-timers to transition to full-time work.

More than 60 total changes and improvements to the National Master Agreement — more than any other time in Teamsters history — and zero concessions from the rank-and-file.

Unions work, unionize.

I want the writer’s strike to last until they get everything they demand and more. I want the SAG strike to last until AI is entirely forbidden across the board in the entire industry. I want CGI artists to unionize and strike. I want animators to strike. I want composers and directors and designers and VAs and techies and producers and stage hands and game devs and programmers and recording artists to strike.

I want every aspect of the entertainment industry brought to a grinding halt for months or even years to take it from the corps and put it back in the hands of the artists.

Re: writers' and actors' strikes

I'll say it here rather than burying it in various tags again:

Always remember that the people hoarding the money can make the strike stop at any time.

And they, the studios and streaming services, want you to forget that their profit hoarding is the problem. They're the reason this is happening, not the writers and actors.

You can't see that movie you wanted because a studio is clutching a fistful of nickels. They can afford to pay writers and actors--large collectives of not-famous workers--something even a little bit closer to fairly. But they are determined not to, with the cruelest resolve. An unnamed executive said, and I quote exactly this time, "The endgame is to allow things to drag on until [writers'] union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses."

Get mad that you won't get your movies and shows.

Get mad at the right people.
