just read about how chinstrap penguins can take 'micronaps' throughout the day--like four seconds--and they do this thousands of times per day

CUTE PENGUINS! Brought to you by the National Science Foundation By Miriam Kleiman, Public Affairs
We're cooling off with penguins from Antarctica! The connection might not be obvious, but we hold millions of records from the National Science Foundation dating back to 1907! (NSF, Record Group 307). NSF manages the U.S. Antarctic Program, which includes penguin research! Selected penguin highlights below.

lmao on the edinburgh zoo site it says “there is a daily penguin parade at 14:15 but it may be cancelled last minute as it is a voulntary parade, we do not coax the penguins with food, and they may not want to go out” lmao anarchopenguinism

So I did some Oswald Cobblepot-inspired nail art last month for Halloween and I thought it would be a nice way to kick off my tumblr :) The left hand features a penguin, an umbrella, and some pinstriping; the right hand’s a bit simpler since I’m right handed, but I tried to make a brocade pattern like Oswald’s ties and a glitter ombre like his glitter coat. (In case it wasn’t clear, I’m talking about the Gotham TV version of the Penguin.)
Also, yes, these are my real nails, and my left thumbnail was over an inch long (cuticle to tip) at the time. Fun fact: I changed a flat tire that month, fabulous nails and all (though I did have a few chips to patch after that).
I took a multitude of pictures--literally hundreds--but the top coat I used was so shiny a bunch of them had a glare, but I guess what I’m trying to say is, if you want to see more pictures or a close-up of any nail in particular, let me know, because I have plenty :) I should also probably share the tutorial I followed for the penguin nail and the other nail art I used for inspiration.

I promised to share the sources that inspired my Oswald Cobblepot nail art, so here they are. The step-by-step penguin nails came from here: http://confettiavenue.com/penguin-nail-art/
(The tutorial there says to use a ‘dotting tool’, but I just brushed polish onto the end of a toothpick. To do the stripes and the stem of the umbrella, I brushed up the side of the toothpick.)
The purple umbrella nails were both from pinterest:

Penguins!
The one with the super pink feet is clearly Sid (in the absence of his yellow crocs, he’ll just have pinker feet than everyone else) even though he’s taller. Duper and Kuni are the two in front by Sid, helping him lead the way-lineys stick together, you know. Geno’s the one in the back looking off into the distance (for Nealer?). Beau and Bortz are the two grooming themselves and not paying attention to the Captain. Olli and Tanger are to the right, watching out for attacking predators (or Predators), and Flower is the one with his wings out because goalie got your back, yo.

My love, I have brought you this wonderful thing for our nest!
*rock and hoop falls*
“Dammit, Geno!”
That moment when DIY nest-making goes terribly wrong—wait for it! Besides the pebbles we provide, the penguins are all looking for the best piece of interior décor for their love-nests—including the other enrichments intended for the birds’ enjoyment!
Our African penguins are part of a Species Survival Plan with other Association of Zoos Aquariums organizations. Nesting season and the prospect of healthy chicks are a big part of our work to help this endangered species recover in the wild.
You can watch the drama of the nesting season unfold live on our Penguin Cam!
