You have been asked repeatedly to put down your life-size cutouts of Eris Vanserra- just because he’s wearing green, it does not make him an appropriate Christmas tree. Please remember this is a family friendly neighbourhood. (Btw excellent taste: classical music, angst/crack fics and azriel pov waxing poetry of Eris ? I love them all)

sirius really spent 12 years in solitary confinement with nothing but dementors for company, only to be locked up in his abusive childhood home for a year, and then murdered by his own cousin the one time he left it to protect harry.
it’s no wonder that sirius was such a healthier parental figure to harry during goblet of fire. he may have been alone and on the run, he may have been forced to live in a cave and to eat rats, but at least he was free.
Sirius's core need for family
In the Shrieking Shack scene, Sirius is ready to cut a bitch and is happy to show his murderous rage in it's full force.
However, in the tunnel afterwards we see something, that for me really speaks to the core of who Sirius is.
The instant he thinks he might be free, he directs the conversation towards telling Harry that he is his godfather.
“You know what this means?” Black said abruptly to Harry as they made their slow progress along the tunnel. “Turning Pettigrew in?”
“You’re free,” said Harry.
“Yes ... ,” said Black. “But I’m also — I don’t know if anyone ever told you — I’m your godfather.”
He almost seems shy and hesitant when asking Harry to live with him- which is such a stark contrast to the previous scenes.
“Of course, I thought you wouldn’t want to,” said Black quickly. “I understand, I just thought I’d — ”
And then when Harry agrees he smiles for the first time.
"Black’s gaunt face broke into the first true smile Harry had seen upon it. The difference it made was startling, as though a person ten years younger were shining through the starved mask; for a moment, he was recognizable as the man who had laughed at Harry’s parents’ wedding."
This shows that above all else Sirius desires family and love. He barely wastes a minute of his freedom, before offering Harry a home. And I think this is criminally (all pun intended) overlooked when characterising him.

i feel like sirius is very wary/distrustful of older people, especially authority and therefore when he moved in with the potters it took him a while to be able to actually warm up to the potters and not spend all time in james’ bedroom. his reticence comes from a lack of understanding that adults/older people do want him around and not just to uphold a name or to bear a certain title but solely because they enjoy his company and his person rather than what they want him to be, but also from a lack of a healthy parental figure in his early and later childhood up to his adolescence which makes him consider healthy family dynamics unusual and strange. however when he and the potters actually get to bond sirius does crosswords with fleamont every morning and james said sirius is out on a walk but why is a big, shaggy black dog sitting at euphemia’s feet while she’s knitting?
a list of hobbies sirius has because he's the kind of person that picks up a thousand hobbies <3
writing, especially poetry. he doesn't sit down much to write — i think he might have written more while he was in grimmauld place, whether it was during the holidays, away from hogwarts or ootp — but he has a million ideas.
photography — peter gave him an old camera he had when he was younger (his mother bought him a new, although hand-me-down one); both he and james are into photography. arts, specifically drawing; he doesn't finish his pieces often, they mostly just stay sketches, because he thinks they look better unfinished. prefers drawing people to views.
cooking — he's a pretty good cook (he learnt a handful of recipes from euphemia during the summer he stayed at the potters), and usually doesn't only cook because he has to.
chess — he's excellent at chess; his mother taught him how to play when he was younger. and prefers wizarding chess to muggle chess (he finds it amusing when the pieces throw each other off their horses/off the board).
hiking — he's a fan of nature. mostly got to it after running away from home. became a routine for him and james to walk up the hill and through the forest around his home.
crosswords, sudoku, puzzles — despite the fact he finishes them quickly, he likes the little brain stimulation he gets from them. subscribed to the newspaper just so he could get the crossword from the dally edition.
music — he is self-taught in playing the guitar. he got one from james as a birthday present in fifth year. when he was younger, he learnt how to play the piano. he also has a good singing voice, but prefers playing.
escape rooms — he finishes them in fifteen minutes maximum. likes the adrenaline.
duelling. he was a part of the duelling club at hogwarts, and little to no people could take him down. is almost lazy in casting his attacks, but elegant and graceful in the way he moves. usually defensive, but is good in offensive play, too. likes duelling with james by his side, but prefers being by himself.
reading. he’s a fan of classical literature as well as science fiction, but will read anything that is not required for school.
casting/perfecting/making up spells. a lot of the spells that were used in creating the marauder’s map were made up and perfected by him and james in particular.
language studying — he prefers studying older languages (such as latin, old english and greek). he’s particularly interested in their grammar and literature.
My top twenty Sirius moments
1. When he manages to seem bored in Azkaban and says he misses doing the crossword.
2. When he takes time out of his busy murder plot to buy Harry a new broom, via his finance manager/personal assistant Crookshanks.
3. His friendship with Crookshanks #squadgoals
4. When he thinks it’s a good idea to break into a dorm full of sleeping teenagers and try and stab a rat in the dark. Homeboy is verrry confident about his knife skills .
5. “There’s enough filth on my robes without you touching them Peter.” Ahh Sirius you sassy icon.
6. Also ‘If you made a better Rat then Human that’s nothing to boast about Peter.’ Le sass is strong.
7. Mr Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a Professor. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 perfection
8. When he sends post via tropical birds, for dramatic effect.
9. When he really leans into the criminal thing and breaks into someone’s house to use the fire ( I hope he stole some food).
10. When he basically figures out the entire GoF plot using scrounged newspapers. He’s an incredibly astute person and it’s tragic he never got to hunt Horcruxes (it would have taken him a few days).
11. The chapter Padfoot returns should be renamed ‘Wizarding world tea with Sirius Black.’ He legit had the receipts on everyone.
12. When he sends Harry a muddy pawprint as a good luck gift (be still my beating heart).
13. When Padfoot growls at Fudge while in the hospital wing. Despite being a wanted criminal who is front of the man that could have him arrested, no one insults Harry in front of Sirius.
14. When he gets bitten by something in Grimmauld place and spends a moment studying his hand in an interested way. Ahhhh he had such a sharp mind that clearly loved working things out.
15. Padfoot chasing pigeons on the way to King’s Cross.
16. God rest ye Merry Hippogriffs. I need a Sirius Black Christmas carol remix album in my life.
17. How he still looks hot while taking an exam. Trust me this is a special gift- I normally look like I haven’t slept in a week and have caffeine shakes.
18. ‘ Reading between the lines, I’d say she thinks you’re a bit conceited, mate.’ The books needed more sassy/sarcastic Sirius.
19. When he put santa hats on the elf heads, and singlehandly created the ultimate emo xmas decor.
20. His room being covered in motorcycle pictures. I’d like to think that muggle Sirius would definitely have a motorcycle themed tumblr.
