Kim Dokja having never felt parental love after his mother’s arrest and having been neglected (and maybe abused) by his foster home.
Lee Gilyoung having never felt parental love after his parents’ death and having been neglected (and maybe abused) by his aunt.
Kim Dokja taking Lee Gilyoung in after the first scenario and giving Lee Gilyoung a parental figure to look up to.
Lee Gilyoung feeling parental love for the first time since his parents and attaching himself to that figure.
Kim Dokja abandoning him time and time again, either through actually leaving or getting himself killed. Kim Dokja clearly favoring Shin Yoosung and Biyoo over Lee Gilyoung. Kim Dokja being simultaneously the most present and most absent parental figure on his life.
Lee Gilyoung finally getting used to Kim Dokja’s constant disappearing and reappearing act… only for his Hyung to never reappear again.
ORV Chapter 27—Manhwa and Webnovel Differences
Regarding the ORV manhwa... while I am insanely grateful for such a beautiful adaptation, there is still one minor detail that my brain keeps fixating on—please bear with me as I shout into the void about my favorite character.
In Chapter 27, when Kim Dokja and co arrive at Chungmuro Station and meet Gong Pildu for the first time, Lee Gilyoung suddenly rushes ahead and accidentally incites the anger of the Landlord Association. Though I highly doubt anyone else cares, to me, it feels like this cheapens his character, resigning him to the role of a stupid child. However, ironically, in the webnovel, this incident stood out to me for the exact opposite reason.
“Excuse me Hyung.”
“Yes?”
“I want to go to the toilet.”
“Is it urgent?”
“Yes.”
The timing was a bit unexpected. It was even more puzzling because Lee Gilyoung normally didn’t say something like this. Then I noticed that Lee Gilyoung was standing next to a blushing Yoo Sangah.
“…Excuse me, can I also go with you?”
At the moment, the image of Yoo Sangah and Jung Heewon securing secret necessities at Yaksu Station came to mind. I thought I knew what was going on. That kid Lee Gilyoung, he quickly noticed it first.
Lee Gilyoung has consistently demonstrated his unusually keen insight for someone his age. This instance only goes to reinforce that—in an extremely sweet gesture, he recognizes Yoo Sangah and Jung Heewon’s uncomfortable situation and immediately takes action, before even Kim Dokja can realize what’s happening. The only reason why he ends up trespassing on private property in the first place is because he’s shoved by someone else.
To not only completely erase this touching moment but also replace it with something that portrays him in a foolish light is unfortunate, in my opinion. However, at the end of the day, it’s just a tiny detail, and it certainly doesn’t make my enjoyment of the series any less. Apologies to anyone who wasted time to read this little tidbit.
Really, this is just an excuse to post about ORV’s cutest murder child ^^
Villain Origin Story bc I too would become a villain if I were Lee Gilyoung and saw that
