I just started reading Star Wars: Thrawn (2017) and I’m really fascinated with the attention to detail that Star Wars has when it comes to characters’ accents.

The closer to Coruscant, the more regal the accent is. For example, characters from planets in the inner core tend to have English accents. In contrast, characters from the outer rim planets tend to have American accents.

Characters like Jedi, most of which were raised on Coruscant because of the location of the Jedi Temple, tend to have English accents. However, there are exceptions, such as Anakin Skywalker. I believe Anakin has an American accent because he spent his early childhood on Tatooine, which is located in the outer rim.

Because this idea of location-based accents seemed to be created during the prequel era of Star Wars production, I didn’t expect the sequels to continue with this pattern (Seeing as they hardly cared about other canon ideas, such as the Sith Rule of Two). Surprisingly, Jakku is located in the inner core, which makes Rey’s English accent support this idea.

I know John Boyega was told to use an American accent because there were “too many” characters with English accents in the films, but this may actually support this idea also. As a low ranking stormtrooper, it is less likely that he would have a more regal accent that officers, like Hux, would have.

I also think it’s is interesting that many Imperials from mid to outer rim worlds, like Tarkin and Pryce, would hide their native accents and adopt more sophisticated English ones.

The Thrawn novel states that “Arihnda [Pryce] herself had worked very hard to get rid of her own Outer Rim accent, but she still felt very self conscious about her roots” after she recognizes Eli Vanto’s “Wild Space accent” and notes how uncomfortable he feels in the higher class Imperial gala. Pryce’s homeworld is Lothal, which is in the Outer Rim. This is also where Ezra Bridger and Ryder Azadi are from, and they don’t have regal accents.

In the novel, it is explicitly and repeated stated that Eli Vanto has a “wild space accent” and he’s even bullied for it. What do y’all think the equivalent of his accent would be to us? American? Southern (yee-haw) American? Australian?

I’d love to hear yalls thoughts about this!!😳

A Typical Conversation On Yet Another Council Meeting Regarding Anakin's Behavior

The Council: Young Skywalker keeps demonstrating that he's rude, arrogant and lacks any capacity to follow basic rules. He can't be bothered to do simple meditation exercises, he never pays attention to anything said and displays irrational emotional outbusrts. He's too impatient and makes strong attachments too easily, struggling to distance himself afterwards. It is not the jedi way, and the Council is concerned with continued problems Skywalker presents.

Obi-Wan: sweating, getting very red in the face of embarrassment for his very first, still very young padawan, and trying to come up with any excuses for this continued behavior, praying he won't fail Qui-Gon because of this, because he simply has no idea how to talk to Anakin to make him understand

The Young Skywalker in question: displaying very visible signs of multiple disorders and not understanding what is that and why is this happening to him, thinking that maybe one day with enough restriction and dedication and self-control he will be able to become the jedi everyone expects him to be

Skywalker: Sorry, Masters, it won't happen again...

Fully knowing it _will_ happen again, and hoping he will just be strong enough to hold himself together next time, and all times after that

This is like, the weirdest headcanon ever, but I think that the Jedi would be like, terrible in regards to STEM. Like, if you wanted to go into STEM, you'd best be going to Coruscant University or space Community College because you ain't getting classes at the Jedi Temple. Qui-Gon believes that midichondrians impregnated Anakin's mom with like zero evidence other than a vague answer of "there was no father."

Everything about the Jedi screams "philosophy, humanities, ethnic and gender studies." This is like, humanities school paradise. No grades, no rigid structures. The Jedi teach their kids in beanbag shares and have weekly circles where everyone shares out their interpretation of space Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet. The Jedi have reading lists of literature throughout the galaxy in time (the Jedi Library definitely had the largest collection of books in the galaxy, which pisses me off that its not a public archive) and have a set amount of books you need to read by the end of the year. The Jedi write on-demand essays every other day in class alongside laser sword training, and have three essays due per week.

Don't get me wrong, humanities is great. It's excellent, and I do think that if Anakin paid a little more attention in Ethics or AP Galactic Government, his political views might have been developed a bit more beyond, "Jedi Council but on a larger, evilier scale", but fuck, I would never want to go to Jedi school. I like creative writing sure, but oh Lord would I die if I had to spend every day analyzing books, and doing philosophical shit.

It makes perfect sense that Anakin "I built a robot at nine and enjoy doing the calculus necessary to refit warships" Skywalker would chafe in the Jedi Order. You put a STEM child in a humanities-oriented school.

This is probably elaborated on a lot more in detailed meta, but for all of the shit that Lucas has pulled and all of his questionable decisions, Palpatine is probably his greatest triumph as a villain within narrative. Yes, he is absolutely a cartoon with no redeeming qualities, and Anakin definitely has a more dynamic character arc, but it's still incredible.

Star Wars as a franchise is associated with war and wartime: laser sword battles, epic forbidden romance, last stand trench runs against powerful enemies. It's all action, stylized violence and "rule of cool." There is good character writing and plot of course, but the public perception of Star Wars as a whole is about the cool space wizards and laser guns.

So it's absolutely curious that Lucas, in a trilogy that he said was geared towards children, had his villain do none of the things that made Star Wars so famous. Palpatine never fought ever. Except in Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine's horrible crimes all stemmed from his politics, and his cunning. Part of the Jedi's blindness to Sidious was that he was playing them on a field that they didn't expect: politics.

The Jedi are not politicians, nor have any interest in politics; the movies make this painfully clear. (The fact that the Council just goes and attempts to execute Palpatine, a popular leader who was "democratically" elected-I will give the Jedi credit; Palpatine is a monster, and killing him then and there was probably necessary- shows that there aren't the most politically minded) Palpatine literally does more damage to the entire galaxy that has repercussions for a generation- seriously, people like Biggs probably lived and died within the Empire- than Anakin could ever do during Operation: Knightfall or even as his tenure as Vader. And the Jedi can't do anything to stop it because they refused to play the game. In fact, one could make the argument that refusing to play only meant that Palpatine could carry out his agenda even faster.

It's almost like the bad guy won because any damage wreaked by an army of space wizards can be done a thousandfold by one politician. And it's like the lesson is that if you turn a blind eye to the injustices in your government, the corruption festers until it turns into something unspeakably horrid, and by then it'll be too late.

That's something to think about.

I like the Jedi, but I don't know why "A powerful military organization that actively supports the government while not being a part of the government should have criticized the corrupt policies of their state and raised objections to enslaving and buying human beings" is such a negative take that it warrants being put in the jedi critical tag.

this came in response to seeing some blog post on my dash about the jedi and republic. i'm usually cool with the jedi, but this post set me off because of the way it defended the Republic.

i understand being jedi positive and jedi critical. i will side eye you immensely and run screaming if you are empire positive beyond the whole 'cool aesthetic and badass villains' and empire crits should and are the norm. i even get being new republic positive-while they suck, they are way better than the neo-nazis.

what i don't understand is, especially in the context of the prequels, is being republic-positive. like, the republic is not this holy paragon symbiotic relationship with the jedi that flourished harmoniously without the evil Sith. like, it's canon that the republic has been failing and a problem since like, before baby palpatine existed. the jedi behold themselves to the republic out of tradition, not for the republic itself. the republic is george lucas's hamfisted take on fucking american imperialism. are you seriously trying to defend this? you really want to look at me and tell me that everything was fine with Bush Era Politics? really?

okay not-Dharmic religious jedi crits, you guys have got to understand the difference between what is george lucas' 'straight white man' nonsense, and shit that is, actual Buddhist and Hindu philosophy.

striving for for letting go of attachments isn't Lucas nonsense, it’s actual south Asian philosophy. controlling your emotional responses is not unnatural and weird, that is just dharmic goals. these things are not inherently bad of themselves, until you define ‘over emotional’ as having natural responses of emotion and ‘attachment’ as a child worrying for his enslaved mother, then it is george lucas' straight white man nonsense.

begging you all as a hindu jedi neutral.

i think that the nicest thing that I can write about the jedi is that they are fundamentally trying their damn best. they were put into extremely fucked up positions and their genocide was a sign of the general dusk of morality in the universe. they never set out to ruin anything, and wanted only to bring peace and justice to the galaxy. they tried so hard, and they had nothing to show for it.

I think a nightmare situation (for someone) is Anakin getting dosed with truth serum in TCW

And everyone's like "Oh, he's going to confess to the Amidala thing," and he's just like "I have murdered babies"

In front of like. Half the council.

"Obi-Wan did you know about--" "NO"

"Ahsoka please leave the room while we figure out what the fuck is going on. You shouldn't be here." [sounds of the pedestal she put Anakin on just crumbling]

They were expecting Anakin to admit he's horny and stupid about Padme and maybe planning to leave for her post-war. They were not expecting 'yeah I did a massacre,' okay?!

"Oh, we'll finally be able to stop pretending we don't know, and he'll stop being really awkward and pathetic about his affair!" Nope, it's so much worse.

I've seen truth serum fics for Anakin before but it's almost always for a Romance Confession and like. No. I want him to fuck up his entire career by admitting to an atrocity he committed. He deserves to fuck up his career at the minimum. He has killed so many people. Please make him go to therapy or something.

Palpatine: I'd like to speak with General Skywalker. Jedi: No, sorry, there's been an incident. Palpatine: …what kind of incident? Jedi: I'm sorry, but we can't tell you that. Palpatine: I am the supreme commander of the armed forces. You are legally obligated to tell me the actions of a high-ranking military member. Jedi: Technically it happened before the war, and outside of Republic space, so it's an internal Jedi matter.

Fear is the Path to the Dark Side, Fear Leads to Anger, Anger leads to Hate, Hate . . . Leads to Suffering

I don’t think that there’s a single Star Wars fan that doesn’t remember the sentence. It’s iconic and a prophecy of what Anakin’s life would be like in 13-14 years.

But has anyone considered that it isn’t just the fear, anger and hate that is in your heart that leads to the Dark Side and suffering?

Yes, Anakin was afraid. Who honestly wouldn’t be afraid after nine years as a slave, where you could be sold if your owner considered you useless or fell onto hard times or just no longer needed a slave with your talents, Anakin himself tells Padmé that he wouldn’t have lasted long if he wasn’t good at building things, and you’re surrounded by twelve of the most powerful people in the galaxy, hoping that they will accept you into their ranks and instead they read you like an open book and act like you missing your mother and worrying about her because she’s still a slave and your Master lost heavily on bets he made is a bad thing and will lead to a bad place.

However, I would argue that the whole fear, anger and hate leads to the Dark Side is a two way street. Yes you can get there by yourself but others can and often do help on the way.

The Jedi Council was AFRAID of Anakin and what he represented. They were afraid because if he really was created by the Force that meant that the Sith, who they dismissed being around still just a few hours ago, were either back or had never been destroyed and, if you want to delve into the prophecies in Master and Apprentice, faced condemnation and destruction because of their actions or lack of action. And if reading the Bible and knowing Human Nature no one likes to be told that they are not living a good life and that there will be consequences for their choices. So if Anakin is the Chosen One than that would mean that the Sith are back or never were destroyed like they thought and if the prophecy of the Chosen One is right than the prophecy about the loss of many Jedi lives could happen and that prophecy says that the Jedi had lost their way which is/led to their destruction so that means that they’re doing something wrong and no one wants to think or believe that they’re not living a good life and need to make changes.

So Anakin represented the possible beginning of their end, not something ANYONE likes to think about, and when they were able to confirm that the Sith were back/still around fear moved in. Fear because they had somehow missed the Sith for a thousand years and fear of what would happen to the Jedi Order.

Anger is harder but I am sure that the Jedi Council felt anger towards Anakin. Some of it was no doubt because he didn’t always listen and obey, hard to control, some of it could have been fear/anger at the idea that the Jedi Order was ignoring its mandate to protect people and that many Jedi would be lost because of it and Anakin represents that.

And while they probably didn’t outright hate Anakin they were angry and later grew to hate how Palpatine maneuvered them into letting him have access to Anakin which led them attempung ti use Anakin to spy on Palpatine which helped lead to their downfall.

I just don’t understand why they just either tried harder to dissuade the friendship, even if it meant assigning Obi-Wan and Anakin to someplace far away from Coruscant, or simply telling Palpatine that they needed Anakin elsewhere in the war, besides there are other Jedi better suited for the role he wants, and immediately assign Anakin offworld to help any number of Jedi that needed support.

And then we have Mace Windu who acted on fear, anger and hate when he learned from Anakin that Palpatine was the Sith Lord they had been looking for all these years.

So we get the destruction of the Jedi Order, something that the Jedi Council had feared for some time, because of fear, anger and hate which led to the suffering of surviving Jedi as well as the galaxy because they had unintentionally helped put a Sith Lord in power but also gave him a powerful and deadly Apprentice/enforcer.

So we have fear, which led to anger, anger that led to hate and the hate gave way to suffering.

And that veered off but instead of ending up in the weeds I ended up at a slightly different destination. Either way: your fear, anger and hate don’t necessarily lead YOU to the Dark Side and suffering but it can lead others to it.

Self-fulilling prophecies are one of my favorite kind of prophecies.

The person(s) that hear the prophecy do everything in their power to prevent the prophecy from coming to pass but instead bring it to fruition through their actions or inactions.

Various leaders of the Jedi Council (the highest religious authority!)  very much believe that Anakin is their prophesied savior but they harbor such an intense personal dislike for a nine year old that they just kind of shrug it off and quietly disregard that part of their doctrine. Like, WHAT
