i know washingdad jokes are more of a fanon, musical thing but really. i genuinely believe in my soul that historical washington was the type of guy to hear his aides chant "we want mcdonalds we want mcdonalds" and silently enter the drive-through just to order one black coffee, no cream no sugar and leave.

yes we can have historical accuracy or we can have the scene in george washington (1984) where washington shakes his soldiers' hands and embraces them- but gets to hamilton and ignores the offered hand to pull him into a tight hug with tears in his eyes.

so i don't know what you want from me.

btw the curly haired dude before hamilton is tench tilghman. my aides de camp.

i adore the idea of washington acting aloof 24/7 but being a quietly fervent gossiper - it's kind of proven, since he did have a spy ring and shit. man needed his tea.

i need myself or preferably a much more talented author to write a story about washington getting unnecessarily invested in his aides' relationships. my friend gave me the crack idea of washington sending hamilton to do work outside just so he can go snooping on his half-written love letters to betsey, like a parent reading their kid's diary.

maybe washington's the reason why meade stuck his head up the fireplace to read hamilton's letters. i can't prove this but you can't prove it wrong either!

also i choose to believe that washington very quietly and subtly gave hamilton shit for the password incident:

for those who don't know, the password incident happened because alexander met betsey at morristown and basically fell head over heels and spent "almost every evening with her". coincidentally, he had been fond of gabriel ford (the son of judge ford) and with washington's permission, gave the boy the camp password so he could play in the village late when the sentinels that guarded the camp were active.

apparently he was so enamored and starry-eyed after a visit that he forgot the password. here's what ford said:

I Adore The Idea Of Washington Acting Aloof 24/7 But Being A Quietly Fervent Gossiper - It's Kind Of

anyways, even this random 1900 historian seemed to think the washingtons were invested in hamilton's relationship. here's two incredibly indulgent sections from Dames and Daughters of Colonial Days:

Mrs. Washington, like her husband, was very fond of young people...She took a motherly interest in Colonel Hamilton and his love affair, and Hamilton's sweetheart, Miss Betsey Schuyler, was a frequent visitor of Mrs. Washington's.

His devotion to Betsey was soon remarked in camp, and the gossips of the day exchanged the significant nod and smile when he and Betsey were seen dancing or walking or driving together. Every one was interested in this "affair", from the commander-in-chief to Tench Tilghman and Kitty Livingston.

implausible historical scenario: southern alexander hamilton (pt 2: washington's version)

Part 1: Grows up with Lavien, tragic lams version

here's the second scenario that would make southern A. Ham a possibility:

The rumors are true and he actually is Washington's son - I know, I know, I can hear Hamilton rolling in his grave already. But there's a reason the rumors circulated, it's really fucking interesting!

We know for a fact that the real Washington was minding his business 1754-1757, far away from Nevis - but he did go to Barbados with his brother in 1751. Let's pretend that he went back in an impromptu trip or that Lawrence managed to eek out a few more years, so they actually went later than 1751 (Unrelated, but him catching smallpox there + being exposed to Lawrence's tuberculosis might be the reason he was potentially infertile. If so, then the timing works out and doesn't conflict with his inability to have kids with Martha.) Maybe their ship was blown off course or needed some supplies, and stopped at Nevis. For whatever reason (my entertainment), he makes a series of questionable choices. Some people speculate that Alexander might have been the son of Stevens. I personally don't find this likely, but I can switch Stevens with Washington. I can and I did.

There are two main pathways I can see.

The first one most closely matches historical rumors and reality: no southern Hamilton. Washington leaves the West Indies oblivious, Ham comes to NYC, everything plays out the same - but at some point they figure out that he's his dad. People have already written a lot about this, but musical based, and for good reason. There's a lot of angst you can get out of it. Does Washington watch silently as Hamilton courts Elizabeth and is welcomed into the Schuyler family? Does Washington know that his son only had one friend at his own wedding? Worse, does Alexander still view James Hamilton as his dad, and beg him to come while ignoring the general? Do they work together better or worse than they do in reality? The possibilities! Imagine a world where there isn't a Reynolds Pamphlet but there is a Washington Pamphlet where Alexander confesses that he is the illegitimate son of the president after the Democratic Republicans got hold of some information. All of this is extremely soap opera, and almost embarassing in its drama but idc, it's fun.

Second, more divergent one: Yes, Alexander is illegitimate, but they find each other way earlier. It certainly wasn't uncommon for men of Washington's status to have bastards, and some did acknowledge their illegitimate children. Here, he'd be acknowledged, and raised in Virginia with the Custis kids (assuming Martha still marries George in 1759). I find this scenario intriguing for both the personal and political repercussions.

Personal repurcussions: would Hamilton have less issues if he was Washington's kid? Certainly his environment would be more stable, and Washington (given his frustration with a lazy Jacky Custis) would've been proud of such an intelligent, promising boy. People would be less eager to criticize/demean Hamilton (at least to his face), and he wouldn't be insecure in his class or geographical origin. I can also see him learning more political finesse and control if he grew up in Virginian society and with a steady, dedicated father. Would he have worked better with Washington if they were actually an acknowledged father-son relationship? Would Washington have planned to give Mount Vernon to him, since the Custis children already have their inheritance?

Now, if we assume that Hamilton’s policies remain constant, then his opponents lose even more major weapons than the Lavien world: perceived preference for the north and background. But then it also complicates Washington's legacy as general and president. Some historians argue that Washington having no perceived biological heir had some role in the trust people placed in him. If people know that Hamilton is his son, illegitimate or not, who has followed him through the war and into government, that's going to cause uneasiness. Maybe even do more damage to Washington's reputation than any real-life accusations of monarchy ever did, because this one actually has some weight. Ironically, it could be that this forces Alexander to be out of the running for the Secretary of Treasury position - having to work in the shadows, because the country is suspicious of anything and everything that looks like a king. More resentment!

But what if his beliefs do change? We get to see a Hamilton with connections to the south, just like the Lavien universe, but on crack. Because now his guardian isn’t just any southerner, he’s George Washington. It’s likely that just like Washington, going through the war would end up with him being a nationalist. But economically? If he didn't get that experience as a clerk in the West Indies (the period he said was the most educational of his life), or as an assistant to his merchant half-brother, then would he have the knowledge/insight to create his financial plan? Washington was on the same page as Hamilton, but Hamilton was doing the actual system-building. Going further, maybe growing up at Mt. Vernon happily and having only faint, distasteful memories of his tragic childhood in the West Indies actually makes him rear away from reminders of that life - maybe he has a fondness for agrarian lifestyle and lounging by trees reading philosophy, and an inherent dislike of merchants, business opportunists like james hamilton, trading, commerce. Maybe, god forbid, he ends up thinking a lot like Jefferson.

Who knows? A young Virginian Hamilton who has very close ties and pride connected to his country, meets an idealistic Thomas Jefferson and goes: "You are my role model and now I will emulate everything about you." People forget that Jefferson was 12 - 14 years older than Hamilton, it’s possible! The two didn’t hate each other right away! I can see them in this world bonding over Virginia and their intellect - perhaps, even if Hamilton veers towards being a nationalist, the lack of dispute on financial matters is enough for them to maintain a good relationship. There's even a possibility that Hamilton, like Madison, is a nationalist and writes the Federalist Papers but switches to the Jeffersonian side once Jefferson comes back. Certainly Madison and Jefferson would spend a lot of time trying to convince their wayward, fellow Virginian friend. Imagine a world where Washington is the biggest federalist and opposing his own son, who is in cahoots with a different Virginian in undermining his own presidency.

*Pats improbable scenario: this baby pumps out so much melodrama.

the 1980s series and the washingdad who stepped up, pt 2: The Staircase Incident on Speed Mode

once again: we can have historical accuracy or we can have this scene that shows the aftermath of the staircase incident as alexander explodes at washington until the apologetic and hurt general backs away, giving him that command.

did the real apology and reconciliation come this quickly, or even directly from washington? nope! but idc - this series provides me with my daily hamilton-washington-complex-relationship hit and i'm eternally grateful. it and the sequel are the ultimate whamilton dealers.

everyone chant with me: historical washingdad historical washingdad historical washingda-

hot take on ham's "aegis" letter

Controversial take but Hamilton characterizing Washington as an "Aegis very essential to me" isn't a disavowal of personal feeling and evidence of purely political alliance like many historians argue. I think it's actually one of the most vulnerable & poignant things he could've said about Washington specifically.

During the war, Hamilton claimed to rebuff affection from the general because he hated "a kind of personal dependance" that was already inherent to being his aide. In 1787, he once again reacted defensively to a newspaper describing his standing as "under the shadow of such a patronage", writing to the man directly that "they have had recourse to an insinuation that I palmed myself upon you and that you dismissed me from your family—This I confess hurts my feelings".

But a decade later, he's able to admit that that same general was his essential shield and protector: knowing Hamilton's defensiveness, the aegis comment strikes me as an acknowledgement of a long, respectful, and yes, political and personal relationship that probably ripened in later years when they were able to reach a genuine understanding. Does that make sense? They weren't fully vulnerable and informal with each other (the only kid with the actual adoption papers is Lafayette, let's be real), but there's hidden depth and affection. I've seen a lot of historians go "see, this letter shows he used Washington for his political gains" and I dunno, I think it's revealing because he's acknowledging that aspect. Calling someone your "shield" or "protection"? Dare I say moving, perhaps even sentimental? Probably a lot of people disagree. It's still a fascinating relationship though, no matter how you look at it.

In 1781 to his father in law: * I always disliked the office of an Aide de Camp as having in it a kind of personal dependance...for three years past I have felt no friendship for him and have professed none. The truth is our own dispositions are the opposites of each other & the pride of my temper would not suffer me to profess what I did not feel. Indeed when advances of this kind have been made to me on his part they were received in a manner that showed at least I had no inclination to court them and that I wished to stand rather upon a footing of military confidence than of private attachment.

In 1800 to Tobias Lear, Washington's secretary upon GW's death: The very painful event which it announces had, previously to the receipt of it, filled my heart with bitterness. Perhaps no man in this community has equal cause with myself to deplore the loss. I have been much indebted to the kindness of the General, and he was an Aegis very essential to me.

*obviously this letter needs to be taken with a grain of salt since he was very frustrated at the time, but i think the point he makes about why he dislikes being aide and his reasoning behind how he treated washington, are revealing.

the more i learn about washington's behavior during the french and indian war, the more convinced i am that alexander hamilton was karma biting him on the ass. dare i say he got off easy? yes, ham had a hissy fit on the stairs but he wasn't the one constantly threatening to resign, leaving his men, and backstabbing two superiors while sending letters wheedling for a commission.

every time washington tried to express his anger/annoyance about various ambitious whiners, he had to shut his mouth because he thought "oh fuck i did that too" lmfao.

my friend just said that the washingdad & alexander dynamic in a non-military, met-when-alex-was-younger setting would be joel and ellie from the last of us.

snarky protege & grumpy old man hitching their wagons together? protege showing some ride or die tendencies both out of self preservation and begrudging loyalty?

protege going off the rails at the death of the grumpy old man?

full disclosure i haven't played these games myself and all this is based off of her word and the knowledge i've absorbed via contamination but hmmmmm.

would gilbert be the dead biological daughter in this scenario or

you know what, 8 yr old me being absolutely obsessed with the sickening relationship between faramir and denethor, then going crazy over sherlock & mycroft, only to end up here, luxuriating in the cringe of all cringe - thinking all day long about the complexities of washington's relationships with lafayette vs hamilton vs laurens - makes a lot of sense. one hint of paternal-ish angst and i salivate like a dog i guess.

Question Stuff

If I'm doing a Character Introduction for Everybody in the Fanfic, should I make 2 Different Posts ? One For Chibis and one for "Normal Humans" ?

Also: The AU Fanfic will be released on Wattpad by @devilg04 (She's already doing a Hamilbook and some other cool stuff, so you should check her out before we publish that too) but we might also publish it on Quotev

I'm going to do small Drawings for the AU here and maybe try short comics showing a bit of the Storyline or heck, maybe Stuff that we wanted to do, but won't make the Final Draft

Thanks for joining the Development of the Chibi AU!

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

"You were not dismissed, soldier. This isn't over--"

"Yes, it is." Alexander interrupted, tugging his arm, but to no avail. "If you are hoping for an apology then I'm not sorry to say you will not receive one. I will take whatever punishment you give, though I don't deserve it, but I have no regrets. In fact, I will duel again, if it's necessary and nothing you say or do will make me change my mind!"

The silence that followed was damn near breathtaking.

"...We'll see about that." Contains corporeal punishment such as spanking.
