HAPPY BARRICADE DAY
please enjoy my first ever full animatic!! this song has always been so les mis-coded to me. please understand I have been daydreaming about making this animatic for literal years. it's, ah, a bit messier than I'd intended since I did Not practice effective time management and didn't start until june 1, but I'm SO GLAD I finished it!
hope you like it :D
i feel like combeferre is a batshit insane drunk he likes jumps fences and shit so on the rare occasion he gets pissed he and grantaire just kinda wreak havoc like little boys in a park somewhere anyway i want more combeferre and r friendship interactions please
Combeferre: OK, so, if you've got any questions, just ask.
Grantaire: If a bear and a shark had a fight, who would win?
Combeferre: If you've got any relevant questions, just ask. Oh, and if it's on dry land, I'd bet on the bear.
I literally can’t stop thinking about an IT and Les Mis crossover. Like the Amis hear about how intolerant Derry is so they show up and try to change things by teaming up with the local outcasts. It starts out serious enough with Mike teaching them about Derry’s past and Ben shows them places to hold a protest, but soon they’re at the quarry and chaos happens. Grantaire and Richie team up to annoy their boyfriends while Stan and Combeferre look on in fond annoyance. Eddy and Enjolras spend a lot of time wondering aloud why they ended up dating these two idiots but when they think no one can hear them they pretty much fangirl over them. Jehan and Ben write poems together whenever Jehan wasn’t too busy cooing over how Richie was a mini Grantaire, while Bev and Eponine smoke and bond over the idiot boys they’ve ended up being friends with. Richie joins them for a bit, and both pretend to be annoyed by him, but Bev’s barely suppressed smiles and Eponine’s abnoxiously ruffling his hair made it known they didn’t mind it. Richie’s jokes had only gotten more annoying throughout the day with Courfeyrac’s encouragement. They all are scolded by Eddie and Joly, whom the others tried to keep away from each other out of fear they would feed off each others’ fears, but instead they end up talking about how difficult it is to be constantly afraid and how they’ve been trying to cope. Bev and Eponine talk about their dads, and Grantaire and Richie also end up having some serious conversations about their childhoods and dealing with homophobia, and Grantaire teaches him some self defense for when Bowers attacks while Enj and Eddie try not to stare. Combeferre and Stan talk about moths and birds and Jehan goes bird watching with them before leaving to make flower crowns with Bev. Gavroche completely corrupts Georgie and the two cause mischief for hours, Courfeyrac giggling right along with them. Mike shows Bahorel and Bossuet around the farm, but Bossuet leaves shortly after being attacked by three chickens. Mike barely controls his laughter enough to help. Bahorel ends up walking around with ten kittens in his arms for the rest of the day. One of the cats ends up in Enjolras’ sweatshirt hood and the only clue to how it got there was a snickering Grantaire, Courfeyrac, and Mike. Bill and Feiully just sit quietly and watch with amusement as the chaos unfolds, and sometimes Enjolras joins them. At one point Feiully leaves to go talk more history with Mike. No one’s really sure why, but Feiully becomes Bev’s favorite, after Eponine, and Richie’s too, after Grantaire. Eponine sat by Bill as well, and he looked absolutely terrified but calmed down as they started talking.
You know that one character? He’s from that one fandom based off of a book that is huge and most people don’t read. He’s a dark haired, depressed guy who’s in love with a small, angry boy and is part of a group of students who are trying to save their home city and annoys the boy he loves just to get attention, especially by calling him nicknames he hates and is super smart and brave even though no one expects him to be. He is the character whom people often make a musician or artist with a sad backstory in their fics and was willing to die just to the love of his life wouldn’t die alone facing the enemy and never got the chance to express his feelings. His name starts with an R and the boy he loves’ name starts with an E. You know him? Surely there’s only one character that fits that description…
Les Mis Big Supernaturals #2
Joly as a vampire. The one who started this whole thing:

Bossuet, former familiar now vampire. He still wears the same coat:

Enjolras, the old testament Angel:

Grantaire, gargoyle:

Combeferre, dragon: (PLEASE do yourself a favor and read Ursula K Le Guin's short story 'The Rule Of Names')

Courfeyrac, a fairy:

Feuilly, an elf (with a phrygian cap):

Jehan, witch and amateur-alchemist on the side

Bahorel in his furry werewolf form

The porter’s murder is terrifying and graphic; he couldn’t see what was happening, and Hugo tells us how the bullet passed through him. The barricade now has an element of horror that can’t be forgotten.
I shouldn’t have used the word “terrifying” for Le Cabuc’s act, because Enjolras is terrifying, too. He just forces this man down! And he kills him so calmly! This what “capable of being terrible” really means – he’s caring to his friends and loves the people, but he’s willing to do dark things for his cause, and he’s resolute in doing so (and he even says “terrible” to describe his actions in some translations!).
When Enjolras told Grantaire to leave because he was “dishonoring” the barricade, he was operating the same way he is here. Le Cabuc sullied the barricade’s integrity with murder, so he was executed. But Enjolras condemns himself as executioner, too, because he believes violence is abhorrent (“Death, I make use of thee, but I abhor thee”). His act is just in his eyes, yes, but it’s just in an “old” order that yields to “necessity.” He wants none of that to exist! And so he thinks he must die, too, because now he is tainted by the violence of the old world. His speech is moving, but it’s tragic. The hopeful side is one he excludes himself from entirely.
Combeferre is the first to say he’ll join him, which is moving for two reasons. One (and most generally), it’s a sign of how much they care about each other. Enjolras hadn’t said what his fate would be, but Combeferre offers to share it immediately, regardless of how bad it is! Secondly, Enjolras’ view of justice here has likely been influenced by Combeferre: “the good must be innocent,” and Enjolras can’t see himself as “innocent” after what he did. Therefore, he is no longer “good,” and cannot see himself in that perfect world. And Combeferre isn’t the only influence! He says “the human race,” not “France,” suggesting that Feuilly’s broader perspective may have gotten to him. But Combeferre’s influence is the one that condemns him.
This may sound like a critique of Combeferre (that sort of life-long punishment wasn’t his intention – it resembles the prison system), but it’s also important to keep in mind that while these are beloved characters to us, they’re also symbols. To those who despised protests for being messy and violent, what could be more appealing than someone who rejects that aspect so entirely that he disciplines the barricade and condemns himself for what he’s done? It’s difficult to say the barricade is full of “troublemakers” in the face of Enjolras’ principles, and it encourages those who simply want peace to sympathize with him (a revolutionary) most of all.
And Le Cabuc was probably Claquesous! It would make sense with how he was a stranger to those who supposedly knew him, maintaining his air of mystery. And it means there really were a lot of police spies, with two known (possible) ones at just one barricade! Claquesous’ violence may have even been intentional if he was there as a spy, trying to turn the people against the barricade by making it needlessly violent.
canon barricade boys as they’re introduced
honestly reading this part of the brick is basically reading a list of headcannons off tumblr but i digress
Enjolras
…a charming young man who was capable of being a terror.
- essentially both a nerd and a jock
- very very pretty
- cares about justice, not women
- his speech can be harsh and intense
Combeferre
He was learned and a purist, precise, eclectic, hard-thinking, and at the same time imaginative ‘to the point of fantasy’, his friends said.
- very close with Enjolras, and really balances his out
- believes that education is really important in society
- gentle, and while he could fight would rather not
Jehan
Jean Prouvaire was a lover; he cherished a pot of flowers, played the flute, wrote verses, loved the people…
- learned Italian, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew to be able to read poetry
- likes to walk through meadows of wild flowers
- he likes to contemplate social issues and the immensity of the heavens
- kind in a way that kindness is like greatness
- an only child
- awkward and shy and fearless
Feuilly
There is no more powerful eloquence than that of indignation based on true conviction, and his was the power that he possessed.
- makes fans
- an orphan - he likes to say that his country took the place of his mother
- he taught himself how to read and write
- affectionate and warm hearted
- is really passionate about issues beyond France (greece, poland, hungary, etc)
Courfeyrac
He possessed that youthful ardour that may be termed the infernal beauty of the spirit.
- ditched the de part of de Courfeyrac because it was too bougie and he wanted to be like lafayette
- he’s essentially the heart of the revolution
- he’s “decent” (victor hugo did him dirty here)
Bahorel
He was a born agitator: that is to say, he enjoyed nothing more than a quarel except a rebellion, and nothing more than a rebellion except a revolution.
- wears crimson waistcoats
- connected the ABC to other groups
- his motto is “no lawyers”, he would literally button up his coat every time he walked by the law school to avoid ‘contamination’
- he has no regular habits but likes to stroll through paris and go to different cafes
Bossuet
Bossuet was a cheerful but unlucky young man, notable for the fact that he succeeded in nothing. On the other hand, he laughed at everything.
- so very bald
- he’s poor, as in basically always broke but still finds a way to squander money when he can
- merry and cheerful and good humoured
- studying law
- couch surfs, but mostly lives with Joly
- bald
Joly
For the rest, he was the gayest of them all.
- med student
- disabled and uses a cane
- jolly and eccentric
Grantaire
Grantaire was a young man who made a point of believing in nothing.
- goes by R because of grand R (aka capital R because he’s such a nerd)
- knows where all the best alcohol is
- so fucking ugly
- a boxer, gymnast and dancer
- completely and utterly in love with Enjolras
I love how Combeferre is a doctor and a pacifist— but he arrived at the barricade with multiple guns and responded to the approach of a cannon by infodumping all his extremely in-depth knowledge about artillery and cannonfire.
He’s the living embodiment of

Victor Hugo was really out here introducing 1000 new characters in the back half of the brick and saying "oops sorry guys, here are some new little dudes you're gonna be obsessed with, yeah they're all basically kids, yeah, you're gonna love them all, oh yeah also, they're all gonna die, in the same chapter yeah, sorry.."

Aaaaand there they are, all of them ! Can you believe it took me more than one year to do all that, starting with the sketches !
I love them all ! but I think my favourite is probably the Jehan one.
ID texts in the alt description.
I've been listening to the Percy Jackson musical on loop and I love AUs so... Les Amis as half bloods?
-combeferre is a son of athena and he just thrives with his fellow nerds and also designs the most epic chariots
-courfeyrac is a son of hermes and his father may be the god of thieves but the only thing he’s known for stealing is people’s hearts <3 <3 <3 and also the occasional bag of chips
-marius (son of athena) is convinved that cosette can use charmspeak but really she’s just really pretty and he would do anything for her
-a certain son of apollo can’t seem to look away from a certain son of dionysus hmmmm
-they get really into capture the flag what’s that oh look i wrote a fanfiction about this once maybe check it out
