Part 2 (inspired by this post)
Thomas for the entire book

Alastair reading Thomas’ fire message

Tatiana after being stabbed by Cordelia

Kit whenever someone mentions Grace

Charles in Alicante

Lucie every time she kisses/touches Jesse

The remaining squad alone in the institute

James with Matthew whenever they interact

I have this headcanon about modernAU!Grace where whe grew up being pressured by Tatiana to be feminine and appealing, go on diets, do ballet (wich she is really good at but hates because she’s forced to do it competitively), etc…
So when Jesse takes her one day and moves out with her to get away from their mom, she starts to completely rediscover herself and tries to disconnect from the image she’s been forced to uphold her entire life. And she quickly takes to wearing more comfortable, less “girly” clothing and just spending entire days alone with a pile of books.
Idk for some reason when I think of a modern & free-from-Tatiana Grace she’s this laid back STEM student in oversized sweaters wearing headphones 24/7 who kind of just wants to be left alone and really loves her brother.
Which isn’t to say that she wouldn’t find her own style or reconnect with ballet/other stuff from her past on her own terms, but there’s definitely this period of complete decompression that I just see vividly in my head.
COG SPOILER
Okay so I have something to say about the Blackthorn family in Chain of Gold
WHAT THE HELL. Necromancy, Cursed Bracelet, F*CKING BELIAL. By the Angel this family needs help.
Despite Tatiana Blackthorn being shown to have become a vile and horrible person, I really appreciated her as a character.
Because this was a girl shaped in a very strongly patriarchal environment. She was raised to never be her own person. She was raised to always be the supporting character to another person. Someone’s daughter, wife or mother. Never her own woman. This left her vulnerable, dependent on the men around her. And as that patriarchal system fell apart around her, her father and husband being slaughtered and her son withered away, she was nothing. She was no longer a daughter, wife or mother. She was left on her own, with no idea of how to be on her own. She no longer had anything to define her by. And in her case, that turned her revengeful and bloodthirsty to destroy those who reduced her to the nothingness she was.
Tatiana Blackthorn was a victim of a patriarchal society, was both molded and broken by the system that raised her, and if that is not an analogy to the female struggles during the Victorian era, I don’t know what would be.
It would have been so interesting with a James who is insecure and an outcast of society + his love triangle would have been awesome with the fact that as Cordelia is an amazing warrior shadowhunter and wielding a legendary sword that everyone admires and James the pariah of society who also has demon blood
I imagine James so much when he's around Cordelia he realizes there's a rift between them which makes him a bit jealous of Cordelia and makes him even less confident and pushes him to be with Grace a strange girl but who understands him and makes him feel comfortable in her presence
It would even have been a great parallel the fact that he turns into a shadow and the fact that he lives in the shadow of all his loved ones
Matthew might even have had a romance instead of being in this love triangle
Something that’s been bothering me for a while is the way cassandra clare did a complete 180 on james as a character.
the james we were promised way back when the midnight heir and nothing but shadows came out is nothing like the james we see in the main series. and it makes me viscerally angry. james in the last hours is well…it pains me to say this because i do love him, but… until chot he’s not that interesting.
most of his struggles that were set up in the short stories magically resolved themselves before the series began, he’s no longer insecure about how different he looks compared to other shadowhunters, suddenly he’s just as quick and witty as will and matthew are, and everyone loves him and wants to marry him! when the james we were promised was a social outcast, who every day was reminded that not only is he not like his father, he is so much worse.
james in the midnight heir is shown to be jealous of his parent’s perfect love, when he himself is suffering because he’s madly in love with grace and she just broke things off with him. we also see this hint of resentment towards will for being so “perfect”.
which shows up again in nothing but shadows, james constantly compares and is being compared to will. will is so handsome, and james is so odd looking. will is able to make everyone laugh and everyone likes him, james is awkward and often does not know how to express himself.
and we can see in the way james talks about this, that he’s annoyed at his father for making him feel like he is inadequate. and then he gets to the academy and the first thing that happens to him is all the other kids start to make fun of him for the way he looks. they keep telling him how odd he looks, like a goat. and then his powers manifest and once again he is reminded just how different he is from everyone else.
the last hours was originally pitched as a love triangle with a herondale in the middle. so when i first found this out i thought this story was finally going to challenge the godawful “herondales love but once” rule. and this would also fit into this idea that james is somehow “wrong”, he’s not extroverted and witty like his father, he has demon blood and demonic powers, which creates a wedge between him and other shadowhunters.
and on top of that, he loves two people! one of them being an amazing shadowhunter warrior from a respectable family with close connections to the herondales (cordelia). and the other not so proper, maybe kind of evil, weird daughter of a mad woman who hates herondales (grace). so the story wouldn’t only be about him choosing between two women he loves, but also about him being torn between the expectations of his family and society and his “dark side”.
but then cassie made the gracelet and erased all of james’s problems and we ended up with yet another boring love triangle that no one asked for…
English: Me: What is Jesse's age at the start of the last hours? My friend: I don't know but he's probably 17 because like Lucie is 16 and he's flirting with her We who go to the wiki to find out his age in the last few hours and discover that he is between 24/25 years old while Lucie is between 16/17 years old: My friend:Ok but since he died at 17 then it’s okay Me:He continued to live 7 years like a ghost so he lived 25 years but he flirts with a 16/17 year old girl

if Lucie and James lose their power then Tessa should also have lost her magic powers because Lucie and James' powers come from Tessa who got her powers from Belial
but hey it's just another inconsistency of the last hours in the shadowhunters universe (the last hours have so much inconsistency)
no matter how many times she explains it I don't think me and Cassandra Clare will ever be in agreement about James and Lucie losing their powers. like its just not a satisfactory explanation to me im sorry
