y/l/n - just graduated highschool along with their best friend lee heeseung. proud pet parent. is only a year old than sunoo and ni-ki but acts like their parent too. a bit of a nerd but not as much as heeseung.
lee heeseung - parent #2. he's the same age as y/n and probably has most of the braincells of the group. he's the one who introduced sunoo and ni-ki to y/n and is tired of being disrespected by ni-ki 24/7.
kim sunoo - now a senior in highschool along with ni-ki. no one knows how the two ended up as best friends when they're the literal embodiment of calmness and chaos. he adores y/n with all his heart.

When you get to the park, Jungwon is already there waiting for you. He waves when he sees you and you smile and wave back as you walk towards the bench where he's seated. It's been years since you properly met him but it would be hard not to recognise that dimpled grin of his, even from a distance.
“Have you been waiting long?” you ask Jungwon as Maeumi sniffs around his legs.
“No no not at all y/n,” he reassures you and bends down to scratch Maeumi's ears. “Hello there little guy! My oh my, you are really adorable aren't you!” the baby voice he uses to address him makes you smile. A dog person indeed.
Maeumi licks Jungwon's hands in response, clearly loving the attention.
“Looks like you two need no introduction,” you laugh, taking a seat beside him. You unhook Maeumi's leash so he can run around and play with the other dogs. He stays for a minute longer, sprawled on his back as Jungwon rubs his belly, and then he runs off leaving the two of you in an awkward silence. You aren't an introvert - more of an ambivert, to be exact - but first meetings are always tricky. You see Jungwon fidgeting with his hands and decide the silence will only get worse if you let it continue any longer.
“Hey um I know I said already this but thank you so much for doing this, it really means a lot, Jungwon,”
“Oh no it's my pleasure, really. I mean it sucks that you two have to live apart and everything but I sure am gonna have fun with Maeumi,” he replies, a fake-smug smile playing on his lips.
“Or you'll get tired of his shenanigans in a few days and beg me to take him back,” you quip and he laughs.
You steal a quick look at Maeumi to make sure he's staying out of trouble, because well, you had only been half-joking about the shenanigans – Maeumi was bound to get quite mischievous at times. He's doing fine so far – someone has just thrown a frisbee and he's running to catch it along with a few other dogs. You turn your attention back to Jungwon. You notice that he's not big on eye-contact but don't think much of it, assuming he's a little on the shy side. But what you don't know is that every time his eyes meet yours, his heart goes into a frenzy. He is not used to seeing you this close, much less actually having a conversation with you, and he's trying hard not to do or say anything embarrassing.
“So Jungwon, how come you don't have a pet?”
The question seems like something he wasn't expecting. His eyebrows scrunch together in an adorable way as he tries to think of how to answer. Wait what, adorable? No. You mean– not that it wasn't adorable, just that– Anyway, that didn't matter.
“Huh wow, I haven't really thought about it. But you know, now that I do, I guess I kinda know why...” he looks a bit sheepish as he says it.
“Can I know why? I mean, if you don't mind telling me that is,”
“Of course not y/n,” he looks almost surprised that you'd think he wouldn't want to tell you and it makes you smile. “You see, I grew up with my grandparents,” he begins, and it seems that all shyness has been momentarily forgotten, for he now sat facing you – his body slightly turned and elbow resting on the backrest, “because my parents were pretty busy with work most of the time. And my grandparents, they had a Pomeranian called Haru and I used to spend 24/7 with her. And since I was so little and basically grew up alongside her, I got super attached and uh, it kind of really affected me a lot when she passed away,”
“Ah. I'm so sorry, that must've been really hard,”
“It was, back then. But it's alright now, it's all in the past,” he smiles, albeit a little sadly, and then as if suddenly realising how close he's sitting to you with his knees touching yours, he turns away flustered and sits up straight facing the park again.
You try not to smile at how cute it was.
Clearing his throat, he continues, “Anyway yeah I think that's probably the reason. The idea of having a dog does seem appealing but I don't think I'm ready to lose another just yet. I know I know, it's a part of life and I have to get used to it and all that,”
“It's okay, you can take your time,” you place a hand on his knee and reassure him with a smile. Then you glance over at Maeumi again and your smile vanishes. “Oh gosh, Maeumi!” you rush over to him.
The owner of the frisbee is trying to pry it away from in between Maeumi's tightly clenched teeth.
“Maeumi, drop it,” you order, and he looks at you with a mischievous glint in his eyes with no intention of letting go. “Maeumi, let go!!” you say again, louder this time as you tug at the frisbee – but it's no use. Then from the corner of your eye, you notice Jungwon walking away and briefly wonder if he's leaving because he's decided he doesn't wish to take care of such a disobedient dog, but then he stops in front of an old couple seated two benches away. He says something to them and they hand him something, and he returns with a couple of bone-shaped treat biscuits and you breathe a sigh of relief.
“Hey Maeumi, you want this?” he dangles one in front of Maeumi's nose and the latter immediately drops the frisbee and goes after Jungwon, who runs in the opposite direction. You make a mental note to make it up to him.
Turning back, you return the frisbee to the kind young man it belongs to while apologising profusely. Fortunately, he does not appear mad.
As you make your way back to Jungwon and your misbehaving son, you fret about how he most certainly does not seem to be making a good impression on his to-be parent. You're halfway to them when to your absolute horror and mortification, Maeumi mounts Jungwon's leg to hump him. “Maeumi, NO!!!”
Jungwon just steps back with an amused and a much calmer “no, Maeumi.”
But your pet, who has apparently decided to do everything in his power to embarrass you today, steps forward to mount him again. Thankfully, you've reached them by now and you hurry to attach the leash to Maeumi's collar and lightly tug at it with a stern no. He finally gives up and turns away.
Covering your flushed face with your free hand, you turn to Jungwon. “I am so sorry, I don't know what's gotten into him today,”
But he's too busy laughing to respond, and he laughs all the way back to the entrance, and while saying goodbye.

As you make your way to the place you usually get the drinks at, you remember Jungwon saying that the cafe he worked at was also somewhere in this vicinity. You take out your phone and type in the name of the cafe into the search engine, wanting to know the exact address. Seeing that the place was just a few blocks away, you decided to pop in and say hi to Jungwon and also get your drinks there this time.
Shaking your head, you put your phone down. Why are your friends being so weird when it comes to matters concerning Jungwon? Especially Ni-ki. Something's up with that kid.
Jungwon hadn't noticed it when you walked in because like you'd said, he is indeed busy working hard. You're seated at a table for two at the far back, facing the rest of the cafe. There are many like you who have stopped by to grab something to drink after walking their pets and then there are others who are on their way to work or school, dressed and ready to leave. The place is warm and cozy; you like it already.
As you sit quietly observing, a toddler comes over, wanting to pet Maeumi. You look around to see where her parent or guardian is, just in case they're searching for her. You meet eyes with a middle-aged man with the same features as the little girl sitting a few tables away and you share a smile. You turn your attention back to the little girl, who you notice, has a treat in her tiny hand. You smile and nod encouragingly at her and she offers it to him hesitantly. Maeumi gladly accepts it and licks her hand as a thank you. Satisfied, the little girl runs back to her dad.
“I see you've met our favourite customer,” a familiar voice greets and you turn to see Jungwon standing to the side, smiling at you. You can't help but notice how pretty his smile is : his eyes turn into little half-crescents and his dimples are simply adorable.
Maeumi wags his tail and goes over to greet him.
“Favourite, huh? Does that have anything to do with how cute she is?”
Jungwon fake-gasps, pretending to be shocked, then chuckles. “Maybe. But it's not just that, all the doggos here love her too,”
“Hard not to when she has those tasty treats handy,” you tease and he laughs.
“So what are you doing here?” he asks, then realising how it must've sounded, quickly adds “I mean, how come you're here this early? Isn't your place a bit far from here?” but even before he's finished speaking, you imitate his fake gasp and shocked expression from earlier, going, “Yang Jungwon, is this how you treat a customer? I'd like to have a word with your manager,”
He knows you're just teasing him but his face flushes bright red anyway. “I swear I didn't mean for it to come out that way!”
“Kidding, relax. We had a sleepover at Heeseung's place last night. I was walking Maeumi and they asked me to grab some coffee on my way back and I decided to give this place a try,”
“Ah, I see. Well what would you like to have, Your Highness?”
You scoff. “Wait, aren't you a barista though? How come you're here taking my order?”
“I came over to say hi and well, since I'm here already I figured I'd take your order myself. It's cool, don't worry about it,”
From the way his co-worker was glaring daggers into his back for leaving him to manage alone behind the counter, it seemed that you should very much worry about it. But figuring that arguing about it would only take up more of his time, you decide to just quickly give him your order so he could get back to work. He's too sweet for his own good, you think.

Reality is properly starting to hit now. You're on your way to Jungwon's house and Maeumi is starting to get a bit restless which you know is because he senses your nervousness.
He was all excited the day before, when he saw you packing his stuff into bags – 'cause usually that meant you were taking him along on a trip. And that broke your heart a little, because you knew that he'd miss you, and you wouldn't even be able to make him understand why.

Twenty minutes later, you stand in front of Jungwon's house, half zoned out, wondering if there's some way you could just drop off Maeumi and get out of movie night; you really didn't feel like socialising right now. Besides, prolonging the goodbye would only make it worse. But then a part of you didn't want to leave him so soon either. Maybe you were being a bit too dramatic about this but you couldn't help it, you just loved the little guy so much. You sigh and ring the doorbell.
“SURPRISE!!”
You jump and Maeumi barks, both of you taken aback. You blink at the smiling faces in the doorway, wondering if you've forgotten your birthday or something. “Wha-? What is this? Why do you guys have party hats on?” you laugh, stepping inside.
“Well we wanted to give Maeumi a grand welcome,” Jungwon beams, pointing to all the food and games that they'd all apparently put together in the living room.
“Seems like it's more for me than him,” you joke, but are secretly touched by how sweet the guys are. You playfully punch your friends for keeping it a secret from you.
As for Maeumi, he's so happy on seeing everyone together that he gets the zoomies and goes around giving big sloppy kisses. Then he spots Layla, and gets even more excited and pees a little, right on the carpet, and everyone bursts into laughter. Everyone except you, that is.
“Oh no, Maeumi!” you groan, rushing over. “Jungwon, I'm so s- Wait. Why am I apologising? Yang Jungwon, as of today he is officially half yours. Deal with it 'cause you signed up for it,” you declare, crossing your arms.
He laughs. “Yeah yeah alright,”

“Wait we're still watching a movie, right?” Though you hadn't been so sure about coming here just a while ago, you were back in high spirits now, thanks to the guys. The past two hours were spent playing games and devouring all kinds of snacks that the others had brought. You felt kinda bad about not bringing anything but seeing as you didn't know you were supposed to, the guys dismissed your worries. As for Maeumi and Layla, they were in a world of their own, having fun with their toys.
“Of course! What do ya wanna watch?” Jungwon hands you the remote the to the TV.
“Why does y/n get to choose?” Riki whines.
“Because technically we wouldn't be doing this if it weren't for me,” you flash him a furtive smile and he rolls his eyes.
Sunghoon raises a hand, “No actually, we wouldn't be doing this if it weren't for Maeumi, so...”
“So, what, you want Maeumi to choose what we're gonna watch? Do you really want to watch squirrels on TV?” Jay snorts.
“Well, even in that case, no one knows Maeumi better than I do, so we're back to me,”
“Oh my god fine just choose something already!”
After scanning the menu for a while, you settle on one you and Heeseung have been wanting to watch for a while.
“Oh, I heard this one's really good,” Sunoo remarks.
“Great! So you guys okay with a horror movie?”
“NO!” Jake and Sunghoon cry out in unison.
You whip around to look at them, a teasing smile on your lips. “Aww are ya scared?”
“Pffft we're not scared- I mean I know I'm not, I just-”
“Yeah no they're terrified,” Jay interrupts.
“You are a terrible friend,” Sunghoon mutters.

Jungwon looks up from his phone, chuckling at you, Jake and Sunghoon arguing once again over your choice of movie. The others were too busy in the kitchen to care. But Jungwon sure was having a little too much fun watching you enjoy yourself testing his friends. He thought you were so adorable when you were mischievous; he liked this fun, playful and kind of badass side of you that liked horror movies.
You happen to catch his eye then, and he looks away blushing. You feel your cheeks getting hot too, for some weird reason. Then as if remembering something, Jungwon gets up and walks into one of the other rooms and emerges a few seconds later holding a paper bag. To your surprise, he comes straight to you and hands it over.
“My friends and I happened to see this while we were out the other day and we thought you'd like it,” he explains sheepishly.
You're too busy looking at what's inside to notice Jake and Sunghoon whipping their heads up simultaneously, furrowed brows and confused faces silently questioning Jungwon.
“Jake! Hoon!” Jay calls from the kitchen just then, “I need you to have a bite of this and tell me if it tastes the same as last time,”
The two gladly excuse themselves, leaving you alone with Jungwon and a soft toy replica of your pet. You take it in your hands, your heart swelling.
“Do you like it?” Jungwon asks hesitantly, sitting next to you.
“I LOVE it! You guys really didn't have to, but thank you soo much!”
You had actually been worrying a little about how you were gonna be able to sleep without Maeumi, since you had gotten so used to having him snuggled up next to you all night. So it was kind of uncanny how perfect this gift was. You teared up a little, you hadn't expected this at all. It might seem like just a simple gift but you're so touched because it means so much to you.
Jungwon notices you dab at your eye and looks concerned. He's about to say something but you silence him with a stern look. “If you tell anyone about this, I will have Maeumi piss your bed.” You know you would never hear the end of it, especially from Riki, if he found out you got emotional over a stuffed animal.
“Woooww is this the thanks I get?” he pretends to be offended and you both laugh.
You wonder why you hadn't become friends with him much earlier. He's sweet, funny, mature, has a lot in common with you, and it's so fun to hang out with him. And he's so cute. That's normal, right? To think of your friends as cute? Of course it is, you call Sunoo cute all the time. But wait, this feels a bit different. Ah, whatever. You're probably overthinking it.
“Yn I think you're gonna love my masterpiece,” Riki's voice startles you both and you sit up straight, shuffling away to make space in between for Riki, despite the fact that there's plenty of seat available on either side of you and Jungwon.
“Pfft please, Jay did like 80% of the work,” Heeseung corrects, flopping down next to you.
“Ok but still, that 20% is important. It has the power to make or break the dish,” he argues and Heeseung rolls his eyes.
You show them the plushie Jungwon and his friends got you, and they all agree that it was indeed very sweet of them. “Okay but put it back inside quickly because if Maeumi sees it he'll mistake it for a chew toy,”
Meanwhile Jungwon quietly slips away to join his friends in the kitchen.
“Uhh Won, what was that?” Jake asks, referring to what had happened earlier.
Jungwon just shrugs. “I was being careful, like you guys asked. Figured me giving them the plushie might be a bit overkill. But if they think it's from all of us, it won't seem like such a big thing, right?”
The three older guys share a look, impressed.
After dinner, the guys slowly start leaving one by one until it's just you left with Jungwon. It's partly because you're reluctant to leave Maeumi and partly because when you leave, you'll have to face reality again. You'll be starting a new chapter of your life and you have no idea how it'll go. You'll have to start packing your own stuff to move in at the dorm, and this time there'll be no tiny pitter-patter of paws following you around. You decide to leave once Maeumi falls asleep, which to your disappointment, happens soon enough.
Jungwon comes to see you off at the door. “I know you're a little tense,” he says, picking up on your mood, “but this might not be as bad as you think. It'll get easier, and the 3 years will be over before you know it,”
You smile, nodding. “Yeah, I suppose you're right,”
“And remember, we're just a couple of minutes away. You can come see him anytime you want.”
“Thanks a lot for doing this again. It really means so much,” you give him a hug, and immediately regret it when you feel him stiffen. You step back, say an awkward goodbye and leave. God, what were you thinking? Well, you didn't think. That was the problem. You surprised yourself with that hug, to be honest. But God, Jungwon must think you're so weird. Ughh, you-
“I think you should stay over,” he blurts out just as you're at the gate.
