Peter: I sure bloody can, and I’ll do it again, too.

Benji: Peter—

Peter: —I care about your safety, Benjamin. When you’ve been out at sea as long as me, you get really good at reading scenarios…and people. Love, the glint I saw in that man’s gaze made me believe he deserved more than a punch, honestly.

Benji: …..

Peter: I held back for you, though. I hate to upset you, but I was not about to let him get away with what he was thinking—

Benji: —Peter, since when were you clairvoyant?! You can’t tell what a person is thinking!

Peter: I could tell what he was thinking….

Benji: (sigh) Well, not much we can do about it now….but I worry about you, too. Please be careful, Peter….

Peter: (smiles) Aye, love~

Edmund was dreaming of a dark red sea, one tainted heavily with iron. At the bottom, seven hundred feet beneath air and light, geysers plumed in thick, sluggish patterns. It churned the water, bringing bubbles to rise upwards and break upon exposure to the sky; they, to Edmund, likened the final breath of a drowning body. And he knew, for no explainable reason, simply through inside knowledge oh his dream, that the body would be his own.

Above what remained of Toledo the atmosphere was alight. That which remained, that is, for there was precious little of that remaining.

At roughly thirty-five-thousand miles per hour a shuttle was barreling towards the planet, its metal body sparking the sky. Thirty-five-thousand was too fast for a normal body to remain conscious, and so The Passenger wasn’t. They didn’t not notice the way her shuttle shred itself by the second. They hadn’t seen the plume of ash and other that they sped through, dotting the hull with pinpricks the size of a baseball. And they was powerless to stop the crash; it was coming any second now.

I haven't written in so long and I'm so excited to share stuff I'm gonna go ahead and start sharing this story I've been working on with very little editing done

It was an escape, one of few provided. That empty book was a keeper of sorrows. It was an abyss I could scream into, a physical chest to lock my heart within, and into that book I poured every ounce of fury within these bones. My writing was quick as lightning and forceful as the storm, tearing shreds through layers of paper. And I sought to destroy, to corrupt, bleeding black ink across the pages. That book was abused. I tore tentatively at its pages if only so that it would feel the pain of skin shredding; I broke its spine upon my knee so that it would bellow out; and, after fits of writing passion, I would read my own words and bawl as I clutched the book closely, fingers digging into its leather binding sharply.

The Lengths: Yuuma and Jukka

Jukka's "grand sacrifice" moment was the time he left his previous organization which (unfortunately) left him with a huge target on his back.

This one was incredibly hard since Jukka has been a member of the organization for several years. It gave him a purpose and a sense of stability he wouldn't ordinarily have. Luckily, Jukka was able to find that joy in his new community but he still suffers the consequences :(

Yuuma's "the lengths they are willing to go" moment was when they revealed their secret identity to the population in order to protect Jukka's own triple sided identity.

This was incredibly difficult since it made Yuuma unable to ever lead a peaceful life ever again. Now they have to deal with responsibility and all of that shitty obligation :(

An offbrand bricks set I had my eyes on was released on Friday (well, more like imported and for sale in the online shop I was watching) and I grabbed it. The price tag was not so joyful, but eh. When is it ever.

You just gave me an excuse to work deeper into Ambrose Prosper backstory, (which I had been meaning to do but never actually expanded), so buckle up!

So, what I already knew about his past is that Ambrose came from an upper-middle-class family from the city of Ansburke, who had a pristine reputation and were considered flawlessly respectable. For some reason, he was always considered the black sheep of the family - never quite fitting in or "being enough" - even being sent to a boarding school he openly hated. This led his strained reputation with his distant parents to shatter once and for all, and after a falling out, he ran away from the boarding school and never contacted them again, becoming a treasure hunter and expert at stealing enchanted artifacts as a way to spite his "perfect" family.

There's some more to it, but that's the gist of it!

So, inspired by this tag game ask - and because I felt his backstory was lacking something already - I created Laurel Syrelli, who was an older sister figure and mentor to him after he ran away from everything. She is a master thief and street-smart teen who became the one who taught him all the skills he has as a treasure hunter today and was more family to him than his blood relatives.

I'm considering that, shortly before the current story, they had a falling out - due to different goals and ideals - that led to him becoming a solo bounty hunter during the actual events of the book - but perhaps, later on in the story, they meet again after all the years that passed and have to work together (which might result in them making up)!

Cottonwood: What event has the most impact throughout the story, and leaves its trace in many scenes?

I've mentioned this a few times in some prior posts, but the main event that quite literally shaped Ansburke was the centuries-long war between humans and Myths, which came to a truce/peace treaty around 100 years before the events of the book. It shaped Ansburke, their country's capital city, as humans and mythical beings looked for ways to coexist somewhat peacefully after centuries of warfare. The city became a melting pot where humans and all enchanted species could exist together in peace, a symbol of progress - however, Ansburke has a darker side as well, since the resentment and prejudice from those bygone days of war still hold sway over some of the population, and the growing tensions between both sides of their society led to the events that happened immediately before, during and after the first main novel's story.

Some other events hold a lot of impact in the events of Enchanted Illusions, but they happen during the actual story, so I'm putting a summarized version of those (only some of them, not the major plot twists) under the cut here (:

Vincent Sharppe's failed assassination attempt. (In summary, he was caught in an explosion in the Thornfell Lords' Chamber - a place which was a symbol of the union between humans and Myths. The explosion was the horrid first open action of the crooked Hemlock Society, and their debut as the mysterious villainous cult/organization that brutally haunts the city throughout the book. Harriet Sharppe discovers it was not a coincidence - because her cousin's injury wasn't from the explosion itself, he was shot - and that the explosion was also a way for the Hemlock Society to get cover the attempted murder of her cousin while also inciting civil unrest). The Hemlock Society wanted to cause more division in the already strained city and prey on the prejudices some humans and Myths still held for each other - so this explosion, referred to throughout the book as the "Thornfell Incident", not only sets Harriet's arc in motion - as, even though Vincent survives, she wants to find out who is responsible for this - but is the beginning of what could turn into a civil war in Ansburke and the rest of the country. It definitely leaves traces in lots of scenes and plot points throughout the novel.

"Thaddeus' Revolution" (the rebellion is not his, but he's one of their main leaders and I haven't named it yet so, lmao) - Thaddeus is part of a secret rebellion that actively undermines the crooked workings of the villains (the villains being the members of the Hemlock Society) from behind the scenes. They have a network of agents throughout the city of Ansburke and even other cities, which have magical means of keeping each other updated without calling attention to themselves - though their founder's face has never been seen by any of them, and is one of the main plot twists of the story. Thaddeus is a good friend of some of the protagonists, and his revolution gives the main characters support in their mission to stop the Hemlock's plan, giving them a better chance at succeeding against the villains, so I'd say it is a very important plot point and many scenes have some connection to it.

The Daemitya Scandal - While not as jarring and world-changing as the other moments mentioned above, the "Daemitya Scandal" is vastly important for the story of Evangeline (one of the main POV characters) as she is one of House Daemitya's most promising heirs. The "scandal" consists of the circumstances surrounding the chaotic divorce of Damien Daemitya (Evangeline's father) and Ophelia Tallonai (her stepmother and an antagonist in the series) and due to exposed secrets and the lies spun by Ophelia, the reputation of House Daemitya (which happens to be one of the most ancient and powerful noble Houses of Ansburke) was compromised, but not destroyed - as in, no one really knows other than a select few know the real truth behind what happened, but Ophelia's lies and the newspaper's attention seeking headlines sure did some damage, but the House's reputation and power still remained politically unshaken. Many people talk about the "Daemitya Scandal" in the story, in varying degrees of truth, but it's mostly important because: 1. It's something that haunts Evangeline's current life and has deep connections to her childhood trauma regarding her abusive stepmother, 2. Explains why Damien is so desperate to have a good image so that he's not kicked out of the High Council due to his influential ex's lies, 3. sets up the stage for Ophelia's scheme later on in the story too.

Pyrite: Could the antagonist and protagonist ever be friends?

(I'll answer this one for some of the POV characters of my WIPs Enchanted Illusions and Of Starlight and Beasts)

I've got some pretty evil/screwed up villains in my WIPs, so the answer for most of my POV cast would mostly be a resounding no, for various reasons, but let's see why!

Enchanted Illusions

Augustus Grimmure: No, they would not be friends, not in a million years. Augustus may be a dangerous necromancer who has no qualms about killing his enemies, but he has a strict moral compass - everything he does is to protect himself, his friends, and the innocent people of the city of Ansburke. His methods may be unorthodox, but in the end, he has good reasons to do morally grey things. The villains of this story, on the other hand, are prejudiced, power-hungry people who prey on the innocent - they're exactly everything Augustus despises and swore to destroy. They would never be friends.

Agatha Greenwoods: If the situation was dire enough, she could pretend to be friends with/on the same side of the antagonists, if it meant she could discover more about their plans and find a better way to destroy their secret society for good. But she wouldn't be true friends with the antagonists, she would only pretend in order to achieve her goals and in the name of the greater good.

Evangeline Daemitya: Given that the woman who is responsible for most of her childhood trauma is affiliated with the antagonists' secret society (the Hemlock Society), I would say that never in a million years would Evie befriend those villains. Plus she is such a pure, kind-hearted girl, that I literally can't see any situation where she would even consider such an alliance!

Harriet Sharppe: Never. I think that Harriet's moral sense of justice, along with her extremely good heart, would never let her ally herself to the Duke or any of the members of the Hemlock Society, unless - and even then with extreme reservations - the lives and safety of her loved ones were at stake. Harriet would burn the world to keep her family, friends and her love interest (Augustus) safe from harm, and would even (if the situation was really, really screwed up and extreme) genuinely consider and accept a temporary alliance with some of the less screwed up antagonists in order to save her loved ones. But only in such a situation. When everything went back to normal and her loved ones were safe again she would immediately betray that "alliance" with the antagonists.

Thaddeus Lockhill: His whole life and purpose have centered around leading a secret revolutionary effort against that same Hemlock society. His cause has become the most important thing in the world to him - its what gives him his purpose in life. So allying himself with the villains would be a resounding no in any situation. He'd rather die a martyr than make such a "friendship". He might consider working with less than-moral people as informants or in order to achieve a certain mission, but he would never ally himself to the actual antagonists of the story.

Of Starlight and Beasts:

Corah Stormryder - As a knight, saving the realm and following her personal oaths is everything for her, it is her mission to defeat the Crimson Queen and keep her from killing innocent people. Corah can understand the circumstances that led Meira (the Crimson Queen) to become so vengeful, cold and cruel, but she knows that nothing can excuse what that woman has become, after so many innocent lives lost. Nothing in this world could make Corah even pretend to be friends with that woman.

Maryon Haell - As the daughter of the most influential man in their corner of the realm (a man known as the Serpent of the Frosts, due to his network of spies that leads to him knowing everything that happens within his domain), Maryon was raised to seize opportunities when they arise - I can see her definitely using whatever she can to her advantage to stop the Crimson Queen, even pretending to be her ally or something similar (much like Agatha from Enchanted Illusions), only to betray her later to save her people. She is opportunistic, but she also has a strict moral code, so I don't see her actually becoming friends with any antagonists unless: 1. she is faking it to achieve her goals (as mentioned before), 2. the antagonist in question truly has a redemption arc

Arammys Lochlain - The most forgiving and kind-hearted character in the book, Arammys believes that anyone deserves a second chance. Due to his memories of his past having been magically stolen, and his own tempestuous magic, the Crimson Queen could use a promise of "helping him get his past back" to try and lure him into a false friendship - but Arammys is very clever, and I can hardly imagine that he would fall for her scheme. While he believes anyone deserves second chances, that person needs to prove they truly want to redeem themselves, something Meira is not about to do, so they really wouldn't be friends.

"Not A Villain Song" Tag Game!

Rules: Pick a song for the antagonist/ villain of your WIP, but the twist is that it can't be obvious that it is a song for the villain. As in: if someone listened to the song and didn't know it was about the villain, they couldn't guess!

I'll go with Crimson Queen Meira (from my WIP Of Starlight and Beasts) and Lord General Arzhel (from my WIP - and possible comic in the making but we'll see - Jade Ruins) for this one!

Hmm. That's a very tough question to answer, mostly because it depends on which WIP I'm most hyperfocused on at any given moment in time. I usually pour all of my focus onto like, 3 specific WIPs per time until I finish either: 1. outlining, 2. plotting, 3. drafting lmao. Right now, the WIPs I'm having the most fun writing are What Lurks In The Hollow (urban fantasy/horror mystery/coming of age), Scrapyard Boys (superhero/dystopia), and Supernova Initiative (space opera/heist/whump)! Those are my Main 3 rn lmao, mostly cause I'm absolutely obsessed with the characters and storylines of that WIP and I cannot wait until I have those three drafts finished!

I'm also pretty excited about my post-apocalypse WIP, Plague of Tomorrow, which I'm planning to turn into a videogame.
