"Your beloved Aunty's just returned home but you keep staring at the contents of your phone instead," Kafka punctuates her words with a dramatic sigh. "Don't you miss me anymore, dear nephew? Who's the one who got your attention? Did you get yourself a little crush?"
hearing kafka's voice has kami initially rolling his eyes, and moving as if to turn away from her, but then logic and actual human emotion kick in, and he's already mentally kicking himself for acting so rude.
he DOES enjoy kafka's company.
"you've been gone forever," kami retorts, sitting up and rubbing at his eyes. he hadn't realized how sleepy he'd felt until now either. LAZINESS really does that. "of course i fucking miss you. when you actually come home, and you're not spending all your time fixing blade."
he pauses when the rest of her words sink in. "i do not have a crush!" he sticks his tongue out in self defense. "i'm not exactly a people person, kafka. who is going to even want me in the first place?"
(it also might be a lie. there is someone he SORT OF had his eye on, but that's not a topic he wants to dive into.)
at least in genshin terms, we know that puppets do not need much sleep. that's not to say it's impossible, but they can survive forever without it if they're inclined.
with pena.cony being a dreamscape, i wonder if kami can sleep enough to enter it properly. of course, there's the hassle of getting checked into a hotel first, and laying in the pool, but that aside. could he enter it?
i'm kinda leaning toward yes, he probably could. just because he's a puppet doesn't make him completely immune to needing food and rest to live. he's still a living being after all.
i don't know how often he goes to visit the dreamscape though, because getting there in the first place is a huge hassle. but he probably has his ways of hacking into the system to borrow whatever is needed for himself.
i'll have to play more to learn more about it, but sleep + kami + pen.acony = i need to think about this more.
kami's crush on aventurine is waking back up.
talking to a couple people on discord and i was talking about kami's one sided crush on him. and HONESTLY, kami's general type is also people who are traumatized and shaken up by life in general. i explained it as like attracts like, but it's really how kaminari operates from verse to verse.
he's such a broken ball of misery that it's hard for him to get into genuine healthy relationships. aside from a very few cases, kami almost doesn't even WANT them, he doesn't want to be seen as fixable or moldable. so any crush or partner he acquires will probably also be just as broken as him.
and like i said, there are few exceptions to the rule, there are people who can win kami over and help him better himself. but in general? if he's miserable, he wants miserable company. it's a very unhealthy mindset and so so toxic. and kami even knows it, but, and it's especially apparent in h.sr!verse, that he's not comfortable with improving his situation, and he's going to be attracted to someone who is just as much of a pain as he is.
"so what I'M seeing right now is, hot bad, cold good, let's get more ice cubes?"

"sounds like you're offering to have a drink with me. i could probably get behind this. if you buy."
"wow, you certainly have a way with words." ice cubes? WHAT ice cubes? kami was never talking about those to begin with! "going straight for my heart with the 'all you can drink' offer, huh? maybe i'll take you up on that. any particular place you fancy?"
Oh? Well, that's an interesting turn of events.
"I can buy you that and much more." If that will make him at least desist from the ice cube idea! "Whatever you crave, on my tab. What do you say?"
"kafka. i am a nonhuman entity with years and years of life experience under my belt." there's a brief pause, before he lifts a finger, before lowering it. "i have no idea what are good date spots."

"An IPC member and one of the stonehearts at that? Didn't expect anything less from you, darling nephew. Need your aunty to offer some dating spot recommendations?"
Tonia holds out a bucket full of ice to Kami. She doesn't say anything, just staring right at him, turning to glance at a certain gambler for a second, then looking right back.
Hopefully he gets what she means...? (Does she have to say pretty please also? Hopefully no right)
he takes the bucket of ice and peers down into it. see, he KNOWS what she wants. once upon a time in a land far away, he had considered the idea too. it would have been FUNNY, a glorious spectable of epicness...or something along those lines.
"once upon a time," kami says dramatically. "i would have done the very thing you wanted. but i am a man now. i have desires, you see. and those free drinks are calling my name. they have become my very destiny."

"kafka was generous enough to gift me more credits than i know how to reasonably spend. any other offers?"
"kafka please. that's third base. i'm already making him spent at least one vault on drinks alone. i'd be lucky if he pitched a second bank vault for little old me." he'll happily ignore her comments about she lovingly raised him. let her be sentimental, kami's just as well riding cloud nine. "maybe i can wrangle fresh communication equipment for us while we're at it. you know. for practical purposes." absolutely, totally, not for frivelous fun.
Isn't he just so predictable adorable, sometimes? "I know you are, honey. I'm just excited for you. It isn't everyday that the nephew you lovingly raised found a prospective boyfriend, you know? I'll send you the list. Now remember: Never put out for anything worth less than 3 bank vaults."
"i'm sure wherever we go will leave me satisfied. i don't get out much, so i'll trust your judgement. as long as the drinks taste good and leave me feeling even better by the end of it, i'll be happy."
he KNOWS that while this is an actual date, it doesn't actually mean anything beyond surface level. kami's okay with that. being smooth talked into forgetting about the ice cubes is always a plus, in his opinion.
plus, the drinks are a HUGE bonus.
"cozy and private sounds even more enticing. i'm ready whenever you are."
―That was quite fast, indeed. He's not complaining at this opportunity to make an acquaintance while dodging getting iced. Two birds in one stone.
"There are a couple places that suit my fancies, though I intend to have you satisfied by the end of this arrangement. There is one in mind I can wager you will like, if you're into something a little more cozy and private."
he's totally not hiding out on the astral express in a ~secret~ location. not at all! it's definitely not his second favorite place to hide out!

under any other circumstances, kami would not put THIS much effort into dressing up. he's hardly got the wardrobe and fashion sense in the first place, but for a night of free drinks (and an attractive companion on top of it), he's not about to let this go.
donning a simple black button-up and a pair of jeans, kami managed to sneak into the lobby of the penacony hotel. while it'd be tempting to take over a room and have fun, he's here on BUSINESS. and as such, kami is lurking in the corner.
while he and aventurine never actually agreed on a place to meet up at, this is surely the safest bet. kami's even pulling out his phone and shooting the other man a text to let him know where kami is hiding out.
in the meantime, he's going to see if he can't beat silver wolf's high score.
"if the trailblazer can't bite anymore, then what's the point of sneaking aboard her ship?"
"you continue to flatter me," kami says, lowering his gaming device. it's quickly shut off and put away, with attention once more being directed to aventurine. "if i didn't know any better, i'd say you were trying to butter me up for your own purposes."
getting to his feet, kami glances around the hotel, not nervously, just still not wanting to attract a lot of attention. though if they're going to stay here, he might as well remain on his best behavior for the time being. he still doesn't like being out in the public eye, for fear of someone, or something spotting him. though that's not something aventurine is aware of right now. HOPEFULLY.
returning the bow, kami offers him an almost mischievous grin. "lead the way, my friend. those drinks sound rather delicious right now."
while kami isn't sure of how this night is going to go, he can't deny his eagerness to actually get to know aventurine more, and figure out why exactly kafka had an issue with him. they both come with secrets, it seems, and kami is eager to learn them.
Though the plan for this date was initially a countermeasure to the shenanigans that arose against him, he would be lying if he said it was not an interesting prospect to look forward to.
The idea of hanging out with a stranger he had nothing to negotiate with was normally met with reluctance, yet this time around the other had seemed to keep a good match to his back and forth at an entertaining degree. Plus it was only fair that he kept his word after being spared from getting iced (boy, was he lucky!).
A text provided him the location he needed to arrive; and with a last inspection to ensure everything was in place―his outfit a change from the usual uniform, accompanied by his trademark pink shades and white fedora―the Stoneheart went on his way to arrive at last in the lobby of the Reverie, to search for his date.
A quick glance around was what only took to spot Kami, who remained fairly unasuming in a far corner, clearly avoiding any more attention despite being well dressed up for the occassion. He approached him with a charming smile plastered across his features.
"Hiding away while wearing such a ravishing attire? I take you're self-aware of the attention you'd bring to yourself, looking good like this." It wasn't an empty compliment, for the other truly was of beautiful complexion in his own right.
His hat was placed against his chest as he bent for a little polite bow. "Aventurine here at your disposal, a pleasure to see you again, my friend. Shall we go to the V.I.P area for the promised drinks?"
"maybe i'll let you guess." kami grins as he wiggles his finger around. it hurts, but not so bad that he's going to complain about it. he did taunt her, after all.
"you have permission to bite to your heart's content, i'm not going to help you with anything or give you suggestions." he sits down opposite her, with a smirk on his face. "stopping a raccoon from biting should be illegal, after all."
