Okay, crazy theory/headcanon that doesn't have that much evidence to it but
What if it has to do with age?
Callie, Marie, Pearl and Marina are implied to be older than our player character (somewhere in their 20s), and I don't know how old the members of Deep cut are, but I headcanon them as older than neo 3 and younger than the squid sisters (18 to 21).
So what if inkling and octoling hair colors become more natural overtime, slowly fading from their original ink colors to the natural hair colors we see with the first two idols before they dry out like how Cuttlefish so kindly demonstrated for us.
And then it would be funny if they could be revived by their fellow cephalopods' tears like with what Cap'n 3 did.
And they can no longer transform into their humanoid form lol.

I just noticed you can even see starting to happen with Shiver's hair.

Captian/Tristan/Three/(original) Agent 3:
♤Chew on their tentacles while thinking or stressed
-Marie noticed this and got them a chew stim but they chewed through it
♤Doesn't like showering bc their skin & tentacles are sensitive so when they found out abt sensitive soap (bc Octolings are more likely to have sensitive skin) they were like "Washing?? Isn't??? Supposed to hurt????"
♤Hygiene got better after Eight moved in with them (see prev)
♤Genuinely likes pineapple on pizza
♤Would kill a man for Crusty Sean's food/srs
♤Favorite snack is squid jerky but feels a bit bad eating it
♤VERY competitive in Ranked mode
♤They are a BEAST in Rainmaker, Tower Control, and Clam Blitz
♤Immune system isn't great so they get sick every couple months
♤Likes spicy food but it kicks their ass every time
♤Gives strong hugs but isn't huge on physical affection
-Obviously some exceptions like their partner(s), close friends & family, and if someone they care abt is sad
♤Happily gets kiss drunk off Eight's venom
♤Still sometimes makes music under the name DJ Sango
Eight/Agent 8:
♡Legal name is Eight Ida
-this is bc Marina felt wrong assigning her a name in case she remembered her old one
♡Lived with Marina and Pearl for the first year of being on the surface moving between Pearl's house/Marina's apartment depending on where the two were staying at the time
♡Moved in with Three 2 months into their relationship
♡Doesn't like pizza
♡Three got her hooked on squid jerky
♡Rarely uses Three's legal name
♡Uses gentle soap bc she has sensitive skin and tentacles
♡Likes playing turf war bc it allows her to use her military training
♡Hardly ever gets sick, she has an immune system of STEEL
♡Loves spicy food and eats it regularly
♡Lies on Three's stomach and traces their scars, occasionally planting kisses along them
Freya/Four/Agent 4:
◇Little creecher
◇Studys hard for school but gets average grades
◇Does SO many extracurriculars
◇Still lives with their parents
◇Tried to get a summer job once at a fast food spot (not Crusty Sean's) but hated it and refuses to work food again
◇Argued for weeks with their parents so they could start doing Grizzco shifts
Talyn/Neo/(new) Agent 3:
♧Feels iffy about doing Grizzco shifts
-Partially bc of little buddy but after they realize he's evil they feel even weirder abt doing them
♧Eventually got Little Buddy recognized as a service animal
-He does DPT, and a few other tasks for their anxiety, also helps monitor their glucose levels
♧Type 1 diabetic
♧Misses their family but has no clue where to start to find them bc they haven't seen them in 4 years
♧Makes Little Buddy's treats themself

I had a dream where it was revealed in a sunken scroll that Octavio’s new ship thing is a repurposed human space ship. I guess he found it while looking for his missing army and some of the remaining members modify it or smth
I’ve been thinking of this for way too long
I think Marie becoming the boss of deep cut is the funniest thing because I think they would just follow her around being like "hey boss hey boss hey boss look at this new trick we've been working on" and then do like a lame spin kick or something and Marie is just like. Wow that's great guys. Cool. And then she spends 20 hours doing their taxes
Said 'screw it'.

I wanna remind people who are new to Splatoon that this same exact thing happened in every single Splatoon game so far.
When Splatoon 1 came out, Marie was seen as the cool one, and Callie was the stupid goofy one. As such Marie was the fan favorite and more often than not she won a lot of Splatfests in a row. No matter the theme.
It took a while, but gradually people came to appreciate Callie quite a bit. And because she was so popular, she became the catalyst for the upcoming Splatoon 2 single player storyline.
Then when Splatoon 2 came out, Pearl was seen as a creepy little gremlin and Marina was the hot sexy one. So naturally, Marina was the fan favorite and more often than not she won a lot of Splatfests in a row. No matter the theme.
It took a while, but gradually people came to appreciate Pearl, and by the end of the game’s life they were seen as equals. To the extent that in the final Splatfest… Pearl won!
Now we are seeing the same thing happen between Frye and Shiver. Shiver is the cool one, and Frye is the creepy little gremlin. Big Man is… there.
I get being frustrated, but please stick with the game. It will even out, I swear. And I know because I’ve been through this. Multiple times. Through almost a decade of my life.
It’s been 1 year. This game is going to be going strong for many more to come. Shiver won’t stay dominant forever. The Splatfests will get more refined and tweaked to make them fairer. The DLC might shake things up too (a lot of people really came to appreciate Pearl after the Octo-expansion).
Just relax and remember.. we’ve been here before. We’ll be there again. It’s okay. It’s just a video game. Enjoy it for what it is. Please.
