To back up my theory

In the flashback scene in Volume 9, Raven's portal had some kind of smoke effect around it, the light from the portal on the ground is not so bright even at night and the black (I don't know what to call it) was solid and took a large part of the portal

When Raven opened the portal for Weiss and Yang, the smoke was on the ground and really bright even it was evening, there were slice (?) effect from the middle of the portal and the black part sometime disappeared

i am once again asking crwby to explain this pls and thank you
