There is an alternate universe where the Baudelaire's were taken in by a kind man with an non-mysterious tattoo of an ankle on his eye.

And his name is Peasant Olaf. Or Rice Pilaf. Idk man it's 12 am.

BUT GUYS WAIT,

I'm sure other people have seen this but I have to point it out, the letter also says,

"as well as the safet of the familiar-looking neighbor with whom you've never spoken."

He's not just saying Olaf is nearby, he's saying that he's their neighbor!

When I Was 10, I Sent A Letter To Lemony Snicket. I Didnt Receive A Personal Reply, But I Got One Of

If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. In this book, not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy beginning, and very few happy things in the middle. This is because not very many happy things happened in the lives of the three children of Húrin. Túrin, Lalaith, and Niënor were intelligent, they were charming, and they were resourceful, but they were extremely unlucky and almost everything that happened to them was rife with misfortune, misery, and despair. I am sorry to tell you this, but this is how the story goes.

How the Children of Húrin should have started,  (via paradife-loft)

Isnt the original concept from the intro to a Series of Unfortunate Events? Just trying to remember where I've seen this.

i saw a dumb tweet. here's a poll for people who read a lot of books as kids. there's no moral judgment attached to this poll at all; i do not care if it was your favourite book, that's completely fine, you don't have to lie just because you hate jkr now. answer honestly to the best of your recollection.

Hey hey hey what’s that Bertrand survives the fire au?

oh shit yeah i was gonna tell that to you lol thank you for reminding me

So the premise is what it says on the tin: Bertrandd survives the fire. however, some important notes before we begin the plot:

A lot of the plotpoints are highkey based off my theory that Beatrice and Bertrand were preparing to leave VFD and the Volunteer side of the schism started the fire, either because of this or because they were doing some shady stuff to accomplish it.

Before the fire, Bertrand and Beatrice were helping Dewey and Kit compile evidence for the trial at Hotel Denouement so that after they left VFD they wouldn’t have to deal with the firestarters. This also may have been a reason for the fire.

Bertrand spends several months trying to find his children, before reporting to VFD HQ in the Mortmain Mountains; his plan is to play dumb about who started the fire and pretend he’s hella loyal so they’ll help him find the kids.

Once he gets to the Headquarters, he finds it burned to the ground... but he also finds Violet and Klaus, stumbling through with a masked Snow Scout.

One very tearful reunion and very confused Quigley Reveal later, Bertrand finds out that not only has Olaf kidnapped Sunny, he’s done a shitton of stuff to the kids. His children are very shocked when his first plan is “We go find Olaf and I shoot him.”

He explains the whole “VFD is a Cult” thing to the kids and how he was planning to play nice to find them. When they figure out Sunny’s at the top of the waterfall, Violet and Quigley still volunteer to go up and case the joint, while Bertrand and Klaus search for codes. They get back empty-handed and explain that Sunny was trying to spy on her captors and find the Last Safe Place.

Bertrand: the last... it’s Hotel Denouement! I know that! That’s it we’re going up there.

Originally, the plan was for them to climb up the waterfall and then for him to hide while the kids negotiate a trade for Sunny, and then as soon as she’s safe he can take care of the Firestarters, seeing as him being dead is a pretty good cover he doesn’t want to blow. This plan goes awry when Sunny reveals herself to be not-dead and runs to her siblings. Olaf tries to grab her, so Bertrand jumps out and grabs her first.

There’s a big “oh shit” moment from basically everyone, but Bertrand and the kids manage to escape when the Snow Scouts get captured.

Bertrand actually manages to keep Quigley with the group; he grabs him when he’s about to get swept downstream. Bertrand kinda semi-adopts Quigley oops.

They reach the Widdershins submarine and Bertrand quickly is like “okay? remember the plan to pretend to be loyal? we’re gonna have to do that now because otherwise we are stranded.”

Within, like, ten minutes, Bertrand decides he’s adopting Fiona, too.

“How can he treat his DAUGHTER like that? Violet, I don’t do that to you, do I?”

Bertrand is on the sub when Widdershins and Phil abandon ship. He unsuccessfully tried to convince him to stay for his stepdaughter, and was highkey pissed when the kids got back. Fiona broke down and Bertrand was just like “Okay listen. I’m your dad now.”

idk how the rest of TGG goes but I do know that it ends with Bertrand on Briny Beach with the kids.

Poe is like “why does this man look like your father?” “Because he FUCKING IS”

Bertrand knows the police + poe won’t be able to do shit so he leads the kids to the taxi. “Hey, Kit, we need a ride.”

Kit, who thought Bertrand was dead until two seconds ago: HOLY FUCK

I have some plans for TPP and TE too but this is getting long and they won’t let me put Readmores on asks so all I’m going to say is Bertrand arrives on the island like “SURPRISE BITCH I BET YOU THOUGHT YOU’D SEEN THE LAST OF ME” and starts a coup in like five minutes

so violet turns 18, and the baudelaires come out of hiding to make their way to mulctuary money management. during a speech made up almost entirely of legal terms only klaus can understand, violet is given a list of holdings now in her name. on it we have bank accounts and stocks, the plot of land on which the baudelaire mansion once stood and a few other odds and ends. but at the very end, to her great surprise, violet finds another property on the list.

having known them for scarcely a week yet well aware of the dangerous times they lived in, after gustav's disappearance monty took care to leave his house to the baudelaire children. he hoped that should something happen to him, the children would remain together, and he knew that they would one day need a home.

nearly four years after they last left it, the four baudelaires walk into the house of a guardian who tried his best to make them feel loved in the short time they had together. almost untouched since the death of it's previous owner, the dust is layered an inch think and the doors of the empty cages hang open. it's a bittersweet day for violet, klaus and sunny. they go into each room together. the kitchen, the library, a quick peek into the reptile room, and up the stairs into their bedrooms. one of the tacks has fallen out of the large white sheet of paper violet and monty had hung together, and the page droops down as though to try and pick it back up again. klaus's armchair expels a cloud of dust when he goes to sit on it. in sunny's room some of the hard toys she shared with the incredibly deadly viper shows bite marks that weren't there before. books lie scattered on the study table from quigley quagmire's brief stay, and monty's bags are packed for a ship that set sail without him.

they spent only a week here, yet this house is so filled with memories all the same. imagine what they could build over a lifetime.

Asoue AU where when Sunny gets framed for Olaf's death in TVV she realizes that SHE COULD HAVE JUST KILLED HIM THE ENTIRE TIME? and spends the next two books desperately trying to murder him because "did the crime, might as well do the time" as Klaus and Violet remind her, constantly, that she did not in fact "do the time" as they were currently on the run
