so there’s this thing rayla does sometimes when she laughs
She doesn’t do it all the time, even if it’s adorable, but we know how Callum feels about Rayla hiding her emotions even partially (see: lowering her hood in 3x04) so I just thought of them travelling Xadia together in s3 before they get together, and Callum gently teasing her about covering up her smile.
“Don’t do that.”
Her laugh pauses, and her smile softens a little. “What?”
“Covering up your laugh. I wanna see it,” he says, growing a tad flustered himself. He blushes and shrugs. “It’s cute.” And turns back to the front before she can see how red he is, and Rayla is too busy being flustered herself to notice he’s looked away from what he said he wants to see.
And then later, when they’re a couple - the latter half of season three, or back in Katolis, or years down the line - Callum just confidently reaching over and taking her hand down, pressing a smiling kiss to her laughing lips as he entangles their fingers.

Y'all... I gotta feeling that Callum can sing. Please imagine him singing Ezran to sleep and Rayla overhears and just melts. I do ask that you imagine that after Rayla has a nightmare and she wakes up next to him and Callum hums a sweet sing to her until she drifts back to sleep in his arms.

Family portraits - part one
I saw a hc that said Callum likes drawing (which is canon), and Rayla loves writing AND to confirm this, just look at the letter she made for him (Dear Callum), so picture this scenery:
They're in the woods, the stars are gorgeous above them.
Rayla is sitting on a rock, and Callum is in the grass, he has his sketchbook in his lap and is admiring Rayla who also has a notebook in her hands, and is writing something, while Callum is drawing her.
Rayla is writing about how much she loves him and then stops for a moment to see the stars, Callum is looking at her, and he just can't stop thinking about how gorgeous she is, he can't even describe what he's feeling but captures the moment in his memory to draw her latter once the first sketch of Rayla writing is done

give me two characters who are each other’s home. two characters who feel completely safe, warm and protected in each other’s presence, and who are completely respected by the other. two people who, on some level or another, were missing that little extra spark they needed to feel fully confident and accepted as their whole selves until the other came along. they don’t “fix each other” or “make each other better”–they give the other the support they need to build on what was already inside them. sure they might kiss, or make goo-goo eyes, but they can also just…talk, and make each other laugh and smile, because for once they feel comfortable enough in themselves and with each other to be vulnerable in that way. two complete people who finally find someone to share all of themselves with. and no matter what they do or how far they go, they’ll always have each other to come back home to.
i think one of the things we don’t appreciate enough, especially in light of rayllum actually being in a romantic relationship and what that means for callum, is how much rayla makes callum feel safe, too.
there are some truly wonderful posts out there talking about how callum makes rayla feel safe — and it is very true, he does, and one of my favourite things about them. for rayla, someone who does her best to not be vulnerable, slowly learning that she can be around him, and callum working in equal measure to prove that to her is so, so beautiful. her letting herself fall in love with someone and then feeling free enough to express that in all the ways she does? is another beautiful sign of growth.
but callum, of course, almost always wears his heart on his sleeve. and we know this largely because of how open callum is with rayla, and all the heartfelt speeches he feels safe enough to display. whether it’s about his insecurities in 1x04 or 2x04, his worries like in 2x07, or his twisted up feelings of grief and remorse in 2x03 and 3x06. even when callum is unsure (“[a mage] who me? no, i’m not really anything”) or self deprecating (“princes are supposed to be good at things… but i’ve always been bad at well, everything”) she doesn’t use either of those moments to demean him, even in the first instance when he quickly starts annoying her: “nobody likes a loud mage.” “hey sad prince. let’s go get your cube.”
rayla never judges him for anything. not seriously, not vehemently, and not without reconciliation. when callum breaks down about harrow, he does so in rayla’s arms. when he feels completely dejected and rejected by magic, rayla is there to remind him it isn’t worth more than his life. to convince him to go back to sleep. to stay by his side when he’s sick. to vouch for him and to save his life from sol regem.
she makes it clear that he matters to her. he’s her best friend and she treats him like it and he knows it. and callum thinks so, so highly of her, so it means the world to him to know just how highly she thinks of him too. how much she treasures and values him.
but callum has also been burned romantically before. claudia stabbed him in the back, in his eyes, in more ways than just one. she broke his trust, threatened his friends and brother, and used his feelings. she basically took his heart and their relationship and threw it in the trash. she threw him away like it - like he was nothing, and he knows that, too.
so the fact that he’s so comfortable being affectionate with rayla, that he wants to tell her he loves her, that she returns all his affection and fondness and support just as much, that she loves him just as much? that rayla can help him heal? that he feels safe enough to be affectionate and loving with her, particularly romantically, anyway?
and that rayla absolutely cherishes him? never fails to make me emotional.
Can I offer you some comforting hugs in these trying times?

Because it’s almost impossible to draw a close/intense hug AND show both faces, I tried a new thing (a time-consuming thing I’ll probably not repeat, lol) where I drew the same pose from two angles. It was hard to match it up completely, so just… pretend they pulled each other closer in the second image 😄
