My Stims - Tumblr Posts
For me, I listen to music. If I can’t put my music on or put my headphones in for extended periods of time, I get so stressed and anxious and I’ll start stimming more physically. I got so overwhelmed that I could not stop hitting my fists/knuckles together to the point that my hands were so sore and swollen I had a hard time using them the next day.
Why Has No One Ever Told Me This?
Why did no one ever tell me that stimming doesn’t only have to be some sort of physical action? Apparently watching favorite movies over and over again can count, too. I’ve never thought about it that way before.
When I’m really upset/stressed, I have two major shows that I reach for: BBC’s Top Gear (Seasons 1-21 only - don’t get me started on the travesty that is the new hosts) and the Nostalgia Critic. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve probably watched most of the episodes of both shows dozens of times, and my family will say things like, “Jay, do you need to watch an episode of Top Gear?” Or “Would putting on an episode of Nostalgia Critic help?” I often refer to them as my “mental comfort food” shows.
