It’s funny you mentioned them, they literally commented on my post and basically told me to block people who do that. Their opening line was “I HATE aang” which I found ironic. After checking their page I did what they suggested and blocked them.

I’m not joining a side either. I enjoy both characters and both ships. Hopefully in the future I can do that without being called delusional.

Zutara stans and kataang stans are so mean to each other and all the fighting is so tiring and annoying.

I need people to see the beauty that is a friendship between Maxwell and WX-78. They're both so chaotic and funny, and some of the only nice dialogue Maxwell has about the other survivors comes from their interactions, even going as far as to say he actually liked them and sees them as a friend (though in his own Maxwell-y way. The exact quote is from when WX dies. "A shame about your death, %. You were the only one I half-liked.")

But also, none of WX's dialogue is exactly hostile towards him, either. It all reads to me as vauge teasing. Say what you want, but they definitely are friends.

This also makes sense if you notice that WX wasn't brought to the constant by Maxwell, they were pushed through the portal by Wagstaff! They don't have a connection to Maxwell that's inherently bad, if anything, it's neutral ground. There's no genuine animosity between the two of them, so their teasing and bickering towards eachother seems very lighthearted!

Also, due to Wagstaff looking so much younger in the short than as we know him, it's safe to assume that they're set further into the past than Wilson and the others, instead of the 1920's, it'd probably be around the 1900's, when Maxwell was still William, or at least, newly received the codex. I feel like William and Woodrow would be good friends.

Jokes aside, the idea that something I wrote inspired that same possessiveness in you that I feel for them is just divine. 😭💖 Even if it does kind of shoot me in the foot by making you hesitate to read outside of that even in my own fics. 😂

Writing the threesome was hard, but not for the reason you might think. I don't know if you noticed one of the tags I used in some of the Sandman fics, but it was "Castiel Ships Dean Winchester/Sam Winchester". In this 'verse, he's as invested in their love for each other as we are. So it comes back to that lack of threat from an interloper, you know? I don't read Destiel either and have never had any inclination towards it; like you said, it raises my SamDeanOTP feral-mother-cat-protecting-kittens hackles. Even full-on Wincestiel would have to have a really specific dynamic (with Sam and Dean acknowledged as the primary love) to appeal to me, and it'd have to be a personal rec for me to come across it at this point anyway, since I don't go looking. With all the delicious Wincest-only fics out there to read, I don't need to.

But I'm getting off track. In the Sandman threesome, as the author, I obviously knew where I wanted things to end up–SamDean into the sunset–but as you said, with many authors, the journey is often not set in stone in the same way. And yeah, sometimes it even takes you so far off course that the ending changes completely from what you first intended. 🤦‍♀️ Staying on track is sometimes down to having a structured outline of what you're planning to write (not something I did with Sandman), and sometimes it's just the "muse" playing nice. I could go into that whole thing since you mentioned struggling to understand it, but honestly, I would struggle to articulate it. I'm sure smarter authors have expounded on it at length in more coherent ways anyway. (If anyone seeing this can share a good read on the subject or is inspired to post about it, please do!)

So the toughest part of the Sandman threesome was getting the dynamic right. That balance of Sam and Dean to the exclusion of all others while someone else is physically and emotionally involved, even if that someone was and would remain only a beloved friend, was really tough sometimes. As much as I described above that he was no threat, I had to make sure that came across to readers who didn't have the (questionable) benefit of being inside my head. My alpha reader and BFF @sam-is-my-safe-word talked me through more than one tantrum trying to get it right, let me tell you.

Anyway, I've probably rambled on far more than anyone wanted on the subject, so I'll leave it there. 😅 I'm super grateful to you for sharing your thoughts as a reader. These kinds of insights are manna for a fanfic author, and I'm in heaven. 🙌🥰

If/when you do end up reading on in the 'verse, I would be so grateful if you felt inclined to share your thoughts again. There's still zero rush or pressure, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be incredibly curious to hear one day how you feel about it all in the end, knowing your trepidation beforehand. I certainly hope it leaves you in a good place, but even if not, you know?
