from the monster challenge I never finished but this was one of my favorites. I'm thinking this is due for a redraw :D

30 Day Monster Challenge: Day 4-Naga
30 Day Monster Challenge: Day 4-Naga

30 Day Monster Challenge: Day 4-Naga

So basically the first four days of this challenge are things I haven’t drawn before. The naga wasn’t too hard because it’s a bit similar to drawing a mermaid just without the fins.

Also here is a bonus pic of a practice sketch that ended up being what the actual drawing was.

In The Interests Of Making More Art, My Friend Verb And I Are Once Again Doing A Once-a-day Art Challenge.

In the interests of making more art, my friend Verb and I are once again doing a once-a-day art challenge. This time it's monsters. Today is "merperson." We have sort of cherry-picked our own monster selection, as none of the established challenges really suited our sensibilities fully.

This is ink and paint on brown paper with some colored pencil thrown in for spice.

Edit: I am retroactively naming these guys. This fish person is going to be named Snaps from now on.

Day Two Of The Monster Challenge. This One Is A Spider Person.

Day two of the monster challenge. This one is a spider person.

I will fully and openly admit that this one was a bit of a challenge. I am not used to drawing spider people, and this one was what I settled on after multiple attempts. I know it's a practice thing, but I still feel a bit cold with this one.

Edit: Retroactively adding names to the first two monsters. This lovely creature is now J. Attercop, Esquire.

Day three of the monster challenge. Today’s theme was a plant monster, so I made a creature that I have now named the Rose Witch.

The monster thing continues. This is the fourth one. It’s an octopus monster. His name is Cornelius Dread. I’m pretty sure he’s a duke or something.

This one is collage on brown paper, with found images and paint and ink.

Day five. Prompt was demon. Drew an oni. I would probably draw a Japanese monster every single day of this challenge if I wasn’t telling myself otherwise. He doesn’t have a name yet. Does he need a name?

Paint and ink painted on brown paper.

Day Six Was Zombie. I Kind Of Cheated. This Is An Older Roleplaying Character Of Mine From When I Spent

Day six was zombie. I kind of cheated. This is an older roleplaying character of mine from when I spent every weekend in college playing Scion and World of Darkness.

Her name is Roxy Queen; she is an undead punk rock musician from Houston, Texas, and her dad is the god of death. She was extremely good fun to play back in the day. No one cares if you smoke when you're dead.

This is Kabutomushi, fierce giant insect samurai out to smash towns and villages. The drawing is ink on brown paper.

The Eighth One. Todays Prompt Was Dullahan/headless Horseman. I Am Not Feeling Particularly Revolutionary

The eighth one. Today’s prompt was dullahan/headless horseman. I am not feeling particularly revolutionary with this one, but I am working on my brush painting, so there you go. I think this is just the standard Headless Horseman, out to ruin the evenings of camping teenagers and hikers out after sunset.

Brown paper. Ink. That’s how we’re rolling lately.

The next one. I think this is the 9th? I think so. Anyhow, today was dragon. Here is a man. A dragon man. Actually just a dragon? Not sure. Could even be a dragon woman. I am moderately well pleased with this one.

Ink, brown paper, some acrylic paint.

Day 11, And I Think My Brown Paper Sketchbook Is Getting Crinkly From All The Ink Washes. That's Okay;

Day 11, and I think my brown paper sketchbook is getting crinkly from all the ink washes. That's okay; I bought it at a hundred yen shop in Nagano in 2008. The prompt was yokai, which is a bad thing, because I am such a huge enthusiast (read: big freaking nerd) about everything yokai that I got distracted in my Mizuki Shigeru encyclopedias and couldn't decide, which is why I ended up doing two of the most stereotypical yokai choices I could manage. This is an uncommonly skinny tengu,  and chochinobake, whom I accidentally gave two eyes to instead of one. Call it unreasonably high expectations, but I didn't manage to pull off my desired image quality here.

I should probably just do a month of yokai next time instead of a monster challenge. It'd get it out of my system.

Edit: Herp derp, this is 12, not 11.

Day 13. I actually checked the number this time! The prompt was fairy tale monster. This is the Big Bad Wolf. I stayed away from wet media in order to prevent more paper crinkles.

Day 15. I Think This Is The Halfway Point? Anyhow, This Is A Bird Monster. Specifically, Its A Gender-neutral

Day 15. I think this is the halfway point? Anyhow, this is a bird monster. Specifically, it’s a gender-neutral harpy, because abusive parasites who barge into your home and destroy your life needn’t be female by default.

I accidentally took design cues from Yuka Ota’s maw creatures, which I didn’t notice until it was too late. She does really cool designs and work that I love, though, so have a look at her stuff sometime.

Day 17. This is yesterday's monster. The prompt was Australian Aboriginal mythology. This is a bunyip. I feel like refried butt today, so I am just going to link to two bunyip-related things.

Bunyip wikipedia article

Dot and the Kangaroo, a movie I saw when I was a kid, had a bunyip song that I always really liked. Bunyip song.

Day 18, Drawn On The Day And Posted The Next Because I Am Feeling Awful And I Didnt Get It Done Before

Day 18, drawn on the day and posted the next because I am feeling awful and I didn’t get it done before Stupid o’Clock. Today’s prompt was Inuit. This is a Greenland tupilaq. Here is the wiki article on it.

I wanted to do this one kind of from the very beginning, partly because my sketchbook is full of stupid and angry looking little tupilaq characters designed to look more like the traditional carvings than a shamble of hair and bone and sinew.

It’s all ink wash with some fountain pen. All of it.

Day 19. The Prompt Was Slavic Mythology. I'll Admit That I Really Don't Know That Much About Slavic Mythology,

Day 19. The prompt was Slavic mythology. I'll admit that I really don't know that much about Slavic mythology, which is why I went Wikipedia surfing until I crash-landed onto this spirit/monster. This is Poludnica, or the Noon-day Witch. She causes heatstroke and disorientation in the sunlight, and appears in the fields on the hottest days of the year.

I currently live in a place where it gets to be 105 Fahrenheit/40 Celsius during the height of summer, and it's dry as hell. If you've never lived in a place where the heat is so palpably murderous, and where the wind blowing feels like you've stuck your head inside an oven, you will probably not understand why the Noon-day Witch feels like a somewhat realistic proposition.

Read the wiki article, she's very interesting.
