Trolls AU - John Dory's Best Friend

AKA, my idea to give Branch someone to raise and love him no matter what and stay somewhat near cannon.

I was thinking in a twist of cannon one of John Dory's best friends is a female troll named Lily he has known since they had hatched. The two have always been together as their mothers were best friends as well, so whenever the adult would meet or need someone to watch the kids they would be stuck together. So over the years she started helping him out with being the oldest and the other brothers love her, going to her more often than John.

When they are teens and the Band is a thing, Lily is supportive but keeps trying to keep John grounded. Reminding him that yes he's the leader of the band but he is also their older brother and to take it easier on them. We all know that he does not listen to that advice so she tries to take care of the fall out from his words and actions.

One of the things they do is keep watch for bergens together, sitting near the top of the troll tree. It is one of the times JD fully starts to relax knowing that she has no expectations for him. It is in one of these sessions that life takes a turn and they touch enough to make an egg. JD doesn't remember it and Lily does not press him about it, deciding the discussion about the egg can wait until after the big tour with Bitty B.

The day after the disastrous opening show and the band abandoning Branch and their grandmother Lily comes by to see if she can help. Hearing the situation she is torn between comforting the baby and immediately marching out to drag the idiot of the eldest back by the ear. But the baby's need won out and she moved into the pod to help until the brothers came back.

When Grandma Rosiepuff got eaten, Lily was visiting another pod and came back to a distraught Branch. The egg had hatched by this time and the trolling was sleeping in her hair as usual, when she picked up the sad little grey troll reassuring him again that she would never leave him.

Though the next twenty years Lily always kept that promise, changing things for him and helping him build the bunker for the three of them to live in. Staying behind in the first two movies to make sure that things at the village were safe and running smoothly with Branch taking the turn to promise he would come back. And when JD crashes Bridget and Gristel's wedding you can bet that Lily has an earful waiting for him. He is not getting near the boy that SHE raised.

John Dory's Best Friend AU Ideas

Growing up John Dory was a fairy slow writer and reader due to dislexiya. So Lily would read their school book assignments to him as well as writing song lyrics for him. They also came up with ways to make it easier for John to read them.

One of the things that did not change over their sixteen to seventeen years of friendship is the way she would read to him. John would lay his head on Lily's lap and she would run a hand absentmindedly through his hair/ scratch his scalp. During the later Brozone years this was one of the only ways JD would become relaxed enough to fall asleep.

It became part of the brozone family's normality to have Lily be the one to calm/relax JD.

Lily was also one of the best trolls to take care of Branch. Her name was one of his first words and was happy when she looked after him. So when the others were busy/needed a break they would have Lily look after Bitty B.

Lily was also one of the only people who was able to see Brozone's practices before they were "perfect". She was also always sure to speak to/praise each of the brothers on their performances.

John Dory's Best Friend AU Ideas Part 2

John Dory does get stressed because and annoyed at his brother's. At these times he goes to Lily's pod to take a break.

When Lily's parents and siblings were taken by Bergans, Grandma Rosiepuff and the boys made a separate space for her in their pod so that she could sleep over. After this she and JD stopped going to the top of the tree to watch for Bergans and instead sat inside the pod to keep a lookout.

During the escape from Bergan town Lily got part of her left arm removed by a shovel. She keeps it wrapped and tucked into a shawl she always wears around her shoulders to cover her arms. When it falls back to show the stump during JD, Bruce and Clays fight in Ronda it stops them all in their tracks. Branch still feels guilty about the stump.

JD is an idiot, but he is Lily's idiot.

Lily still calls JD Johnny. She is the only one who does.

After rescuing Floyd and going to Pop Village to recover, JD quickly learns that if he starts destroying his self esteem due to being"too old" Lily will use a pan. Said pan quickly becomes a fear for all the brothers.

The older Brozone Brothers have a long standing betting pool for when JD and Lily finally get together. Branch, Poppy, and Viva quickly join.

The betting pool is destroyed when Lily's son is an almost perfect replica of JD. He just had his mother's eyes and smile.

After seeing the now twenty year old man the brothers get another dose of everything they missed.

JD gives a long overdue apology to Lily for all the times he's left a mess or problems for her to take care off. And when he heard of why she didn't tell him about the egg, he feels even worse.

All the bros feel left out when Lily quickly and easily gets their stubborn baby brother to do exactly what is needed when he is sick. She put in the hours, mamas got it.

John Dory's Best Friend AU Ideas Part 3

I have seen fics where John Dory does not celebrate his birthday to the point his brothers don't know when it it. Lily does.

After everyone is reunited the are surprised one day by her cooking her famous pancakes for breakfast with everything set up like they always did for a birthday. When JD comes down she runs to hug him, "Happy birthday Johnny!" Then pulling him to sit in the chair with balloons tied to the back, "And we are celebrating your birthday the whole day this year, not just after everyone's gone to sleep." She then leads them through a quiet, laid back kind of day with nature and animals.

Speaking of birthdays, the goggles JD wears were a birthday gift from Lily.

It was only after John Dory returned to the tree to find everyone gone did he realize that he was completely in love with Lily. Not to take away from the devastation of loosing his family. But she was the one he could go to for comfort and relief, the one person in his mind that had no expectations or needs from him. And until she was gone he had no idea how much he depend on her to be his rock.

After finding Branch, while getting his lecture from Lily he is the embodiment of the line from the Incredibles, "I don't even care that your mad at me, I'm just happy your alive!"

JD doesn't deserve Lily and is highly aware of it. So much that he self sabotages and doesn't make any attempts to be more than friends. Just overjoyed he is still allowed in her life at all.

Lily is too busy being to the single mother of two (Branch as well as the egg she carried) and surrogate mother of the rest of the brozone bros as well as the snack pack to notice that JD's in love with her. She does know that he's in love and being stubborn, but has never thought he would look at he in that way.

I have promised some things on here and started things on multiple sites. Curse my hyper fixation being in between things at the moment so I can't do any of it!

John Dory telling everyone that Branch and Poppy should take their time and not get delustional.

Bruce/Spruce, "Says the guy who was doodling his joint tombstone with Lily at the age of sixteen and still hasn't asked her out over twenty years later."

*Brozone bros, Poppy, Viva, and Brandy all look at JD.*

Branch, "You did that?" He is shocked but doesn't know if he should be happy that Lily would be officially a part of the family or appalled because that's his mama.

John Dory stands still blinking for a moment before saying too loudly, "I need to go check on Rhonda, see you later!" And running away.

Interview soon after Bitty B joined the band, and JD just finished introducing everyone with their roles (Leader, Heartthrob, ect.)

Interviewer motions to Lily just off stage, "And what does she do?"

JD, "She keeps the brain cell."

All the bros, "All hail the keeper of the brain cell!"

JD stressing about the band, bergans, and being the parent of his brothers.

Lily sees him, and decided to pounce on and tickle attack him.

Baby Branch tottles in and sees the tickle attack happening. Starts to tickle his brother too.

A few months after the events of TBT and everything calms down/ the trolls are healing.

Lily showing her stump, "The Bergan chief would have made me into soup if it wasn't for this guy." Seeing the bros horrified faces, "I know, I would have been a better pizza."

Bruce: Looking at Lily concerned, "Is dark humor how you handle a depressive episode?"

Lily, "Episode? Papa blue this is a depressive series that's in season twenty and still going strong."

Bruce looked at Brandy who immediately called the family therapist.

John Dory's Best Friend AU Story

I have started writing this fan fiction. I have four chapters posted to Fanfiction.net and Archive of our own as I write this. The story is called Fish and Flower by Jillian Fahey. Yes, the chapters may be shorter. I have a solid idea of three points of the story and how it will be an open ending. But actually getting the story to do things is not always smooth. It will be mostly focused on John Dory, his friend/my OC Lily, and Branch with the other brothers mentioned. I hope you check it out.
