Inktober 2015 - Day 18 : brush inking and ink wash The Crow Boy’s natural habitat is rooftops and windowsills. What’s this? A proper background? Astonishing! Although not completely without laziness, as this roof is basically the roof of my local church.
Inktober 2014 - Day 19 : G-pen What would Ely and Trispin look like if I drew them like Poppet? I wondered. The answer was ‘pretty creepy and weird’.
Inktober 2015 - Day 20 : brush pen
Violet taught Khet and Vekh anime poses, but they don’t look as cute when you have terrifying goat eyes. You can get away with adorable vampire teeth though.
I accidentally crippled myself copying up notes yesterday, so I could only manage a line drawing. No cross-hatching for you two. These two also don’t have the masses of piercings and weird haircuts that other Vrega have because they’re very devout Khukh-worshippers (Khukh is the god of nature) and are forbidden from cutting their hair or deliberately harming themselves in any way. Perfect for when the thought of detail work makes my hands cry. They opted out of the Trial for religious reasons (it involves ritual mutilation) so they’ve started adult life in one of the lower castes and work as general dogsbodies like Meruch (who took the Trial but performed poorly). The double canines and hourglass pupils are benign mutations that are pretty common in their clan, and are thought to be a blessing from Khukh. Violet likes these two because they’re some of the only people on the ship who can give a decent piggy-back ride (no spikes), and at ‘only’ 6′ Khet is one of the very few who are less than a foot taller than her.
Inktober 2015 - Day 21 : mapping pen and grey pen Lottie isn’t sure how to feel about all these new friends. My hand is still slightly crippled, so nothing complicated yet. Although having said that, my goodness those crows were a pig to fill in, even with a brush.
Inktober 2015 - Day 22 : ink and water I went blackberry picking, so Sweetpea and Coriander did too.
Inktober 2015 - Day 23 : mapping pen He’s a lovely and responsible brother, but magically speaking Nat may be a bad influence. This is probably the first one I just doodled up without a plan this year. I even changed my mind about how to ink it halfway through (originally it was going to have spot colour). That’s probably why I can’t tell if I like it or not. Nat’s nice and on-model though, that’s unusual.
Inktober 2015 - Day 24 : mapping pen Oh no, Jessie is already starting to look like her brother! At least she’s still got her clothes on. I’ve been trying to avoid using the same type of inking twice in a row, but I thought 23 could use a companion piece.
Inktober 2015 - Day 25 : fineliners and markers
Spider is trying to bend a spoon, but he’s about to be distracted. This was going to have better spot colour, but I was hobbled by the sudden and unexpected death of my purple marker. Do Copics always just suddenly run out, with no warning?
Inktober 2015 - Day 26 : ink and water I’m still working on a background technique, but I think I was a bit too ambitious. Shasta’s environment is hard to draw at the best of times.
Inktober 2015 - Day 29 : cartridge pen Lena is showing her brother how to tell fortunes with normal playing cards. It’s a real divination system, so bonus points if you know what the spread says. Although I had trouble drawing the cards that small so I’ll just tell you that it’s reversed ace of spades/10 of hearts/4 of clubs.
Inktober 2015 - Day 30 : gel pen For some pleasant symmetry, both the second and second-to-last pictures this Inktober are now slightly disappointing pictures of Nat that were hobbled by an uncooperative gel pen. I wanted to draw a full-length view of his robes.
Inktober 2015 - Day 31 : brush inking and coloured ink And the last one, happy Hallowe’en! This year Tabitha is collecting branches for the bonfires that ward off evil spirits during this important night.
