My story, “The Tongue,” did better with the judges than the popular vote of the Friends of the Boundary Waters scary story contest, winding up in this podcast anthology. A friend caught it on the radio on their way out of the wilderness this summer, which is kind of neat.

Inktober day 3 - G-pen
I did a couple of simple head-shots to break in my new G-pen while watching a documentary. I had a cartridge G-pen once before, but they dry out if you don't use them every few days and I accidentally destroyed it. I hope to keep this one alive much longer.
Ely and Trispin are changelings and not to be trusted.

Inktober day 15 - mapping pen I drew Trispin a few times already, so here's Ely as well.

Inktober day 16 - g-pen (mostly) If anyone was wondering why the other students don't just avoid Ely and Trispin when they are so obviously bad news, the answer is glamours. I used the mapping pen for Trispin's hair, the G-pen is too fine for large areas.

I just realised my last two pictures from Inktober 2014 didn’t post! Oh no! I can’t have that, it’ll bother me forever.
Here’s Inktober day 30 - mapping pen
Featuring Ely’s long, disgusting toenails, long, disgusting fingernails and long, disgusting hair.

Inktober 2014 - Day 19 : G-pen What would Ely and Trispin look like if I drew them like Poppet? I wondered. The answer was ‘pretty creepy and weird’.

Inktober 2016 - Day 15 : gel pen Tempting with fruit isn’t the only way for a bad fairy to entrap unsuspecting humans. (Ely is also wearing her glamour like a sensible changeling.)

Inktober 2016 - Day 26 : mapping pen I already drew Ely with her glamour, so here she is without it. She’s just as gross as Trispin.

I ended up doing a lot of companion pieces in this year’s Inktober, so I thought I’d compile them so you can see them side-by-side. I’m pleased by how well most of them line up, since I do these in a bound sketchbook and they’re all many pages apart. Also a bonus pair from last year!

Inktober 2017 : Day 16 - gel pens
Wipe that glamour off your face Trispin, Ely isn’t impressed. I have a super-fine gel pen (0.25) that I rarely use, so I tried it for the cross-hatching on this. I like it but it’s just so scratchy! I had to pull paper fluff out of the nib several times.

Inktober 2018 : Day 17 - fountain pentel Ely looks quite different with and without her glamour. Another outing for the splatter pen! I’m still learning how to handle shading with this one. I’ll do a matching picture of Trispin later.

One of the biggest disappointments of 2020 for me was failing Inktober for the first time since 2013. I even did most of my pictures at half size to make it easier, but I was so worn out by day 8 that I had to give up. I thought it would be nice to post the ones I did finish before the end of the year.
I marked out all the pages in my sketchbook at the start, so I’ll try to finish the rest before next October.

Here’s the rest of them! Right at the end of this month I decided I had run out of time, so the real life sketchbook has a few pages painted flat black between these.
I feel a lot better this year, but I have a couple of strategies planned in case things go badly again. I might go as small as A7 if a whole page is too daunting, and in the limit if I really can’t do anything on a given day I’ll paint it black again. That way I won’t have a backlog - either it’s done or it’s not.
Inktober is may favourite art event of the year so I hope this time goes better!

Not as musical without the glamour either.

Inktober 2022 Day 14: dip pen
