Name Origins Tag!!!
@sabewebb has given me an excuse to nerd out and I'm taking it!
I am, and always have been, a sucker for symbolism. I choose many names for their meanings (it's great when a stolen name has a fitting theme!) and sometimes that means making a joke for myself and the other word nerds out there.
Example: Connor means "lover of hounds" and he's friends with a werewolf family. Dog People taken literally. I think it's funny. His last name, Willard, is directly taken from the song "Willard!" by Will Wood because I thought that the whole thing sounded like something Connor would say.
Alarick means “noble, regal ruler” or “ruler of everything” and he's the leader of the pack.
Elouise, Teagan, and Steven came from their inspiration song: "Solider, Poet, King" by The Oh Hellos. They mean warrior, poet, and crown respectively. I felt I couldn't use the "ruler" meaning because Steven, being the youngest, definitely isn't in charge.
The pack's surname, Ibarra, means meadow. To explain that, I first have to explain a character only ever spoken about because she's dead long before the story starts.
Morella Ibarra is Alarick's dead wife. Morella means "death." I know, I know. Very creative. But it has a purpose! Waaaaay later in the story, we learn about the system of deities in the Hidnight world (which will be its own post) and the three planes they operate on. There's the mortal and the divine planes, and then there's The Valley of Death. The Valley of Death is called that because as the in-between for the mortal plane and the divine, it's where the Death angels work. If you've been paying attention, Morella Ibarra translates to "Death Meadow." It foreshadows her appearance in The Valley later. She is NOT the Goddess of Death.

Valerie's name was chosen right when I began the first ever draft of her story in, like, sixth/early seventh grade. I had just realized that I could use names to symbolize character traits and overarching themes. And I will admit, Valerie used to be a self insert 🤦♂️ so when I found a beautiful name that also meant "strong, Independent, and courageous," I latched onto it because I needed the reassurance at the time.

I stole Oakley's name from a girl I met on vacation as a child. Its symbolism is that she's from the Forest Region. "Oak" ley. Get it? I'm sorry.
Bernadette's name will be explained in a lore dump post about witches.

Hidnight Lore (pt. 1)
Twins are the most common birth for werewolves because they're between a litter of pups and a single human baby. Werewolves lack the control to turn into their wolf forms at will until they're about 5 years old but the full moon still affects them.
Elouise (left) and Teagan (right) are twins. (They look so pale in the picture 😭)
A major theme of Hidnight is that family is who you choose so Steven is a single birth because thematically, Connor is supposed to be his twin.

Connor: 1/10 or 9/10. Physical touch is a bit of a set off for him because it reminds him of his mother. Hugs were always the thing that got him to stay no matter how bad the abuse got. He'd think "I can take it. I don't want to give up what little good I have for another unknown. I don't want to be the one to tear this family apart." Alternatively, when he grows to really love and trust the Ibarras, their penchant for showing affection via physical touch becomes a grounding and healing thing for him. But only the Ibarras. Nobody else.
Steven: 6 or 7/10. He'll insist over and over that he's tough and can take care of himself (a consequence of being the baby of the family) but he'll never deny you a hug if you ask for it. Steven and Connor sometimes sleep while holding hands.
Elouise: 8/10. She's 6'6", she could bench press you without breaking a sweat, she's a stoic, intelligent badass... and she's a major softie. You might not see her crack a smile but inside her head she's getting all flustered. And don't worry, she won't snap you in half when she squeezes you.
Teagan: 10/10. VERY cuddly. She'll walk up behind you, wrap her arms around your neck, and press her face into your hair at random times. She'll constantly pull you closer if you're standing near her and she is ALWAYS the big spoon.
Alarick: 10/10. He's subtler and more self-controlled than Teagan but he's exactly the same. Pulls you closer, lets you lean against him on a bench or couch, will let almost anyone hug him if they ask and maybe even if they didn't.

Some fun Hidnight trivia, as a treat:
The girl Connor bites in this scene is named Florence and she's a character in a spin-off short story set in the same universe. Florence was originally a completely separate story I dreamed up one night as I struggled to fall asleep then later decided to put in the same world. However, its inciting incident (Florence being bitten) didn't align with the lore of Hidnight which is that only certain werewolves can transmit lycanthropy via bite (Connor becomes one of them). I then (independently) realized that I was protecting Connor from consequences too much so I let him actually fuck up and hurt people and suddenly Florence fit in the same universe!
I made this note back in May:
I keep coming up with spin-off stories set in the same world as Hidnight except no I don't because the inciting incidents fundamentally conflict with the important world logic previously established in the core story.
Coming up with these spin-offs has helped me cement the themes of the original story so it's not all bad.

💖 [Heart] What is your favorite moment in this WIP?
When Connor gives his funeral monologue. It was so cathartic to write the first pass but ever since I've been struggling to refine it to keep it at a decent length while still having the impact that draws me to this story again and again. I want it to be perfect.
🍖 [Meat] How many fictional people were harmed in the making of this WIP?
Current death count: 3 named characters + some faceless antagonists. Also feels like every time I make progress Connor gets more fucked up and traumatized (via the narrative AND retroactively). I love him. He's my boy. <3

Already breaking the rules because Writer Friend™ gave me this one and it was too good. Roblox may not exist in her world but in a modern au this would not only be 100% true but also it'd be 40% of her inner monologue. Just. Constantly referencing Roblox games and planning the next time she logs on. She knows all the Doors lore and owns every purchasable item in Dress to Impress (not because she has Robux, she's just on that grind). ((My only knowledge of Roblox comes from Game Theory and memes please do not fact check me :( ))

Oh, yeah. Totally. Growing up in the convent and then raising four kids will do that to you. Plus, impulsive cleaning gives Oakley a sense of control.

If the source media were a musical, Steven would be the one character who asks why everyone is singing.
On one hand, I'm tempted to say yes because I can imagine it perfectly. On the other hand, the SOURCE is a musical meaning that the norm is that EVERYONE sings. Steven is probably the only one who can match Teagan's level of drama and he's not self-aware enough to realize that it's weird for people to sing all the time. So this one's wrong.
