What if

The reason why Petunia hates Harry so much is because she thinks he is Severus' son. In the 5th book, when Harry mentions the dementors, Petunia knows what they are already because she remembers Lily and the terrible boy talking about it and then Harry tells her not to talk about his father that way, she does not correct Harry when he called the terrible boy his father. She had never really met James and did not really know Severus' name, so what if she assumed that the same boy that stole her sister away from her is Harry's father.

I'm not saying that the way she treated Harry is acceptable if she thought he was Severus' son but what if...
