Going purely in terms of personality Limbus Company got Gregor right for the most part. The only main difference I’d say is he’s more cynical and less passive and willing to survive through it all (though it helps a lot that he has enough autonomy to do that without assistance).
What really makes the tragedy of The Metamorphosis stick is that it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Gregor Samsa really is just this sweetheart who wants to be of help to his loved ones or at least cause them as little trouble as possible. There’s something endearing about how skewed his priorities are when he wakes up a giant bug and thinks “Oh I’m going to be late for work!” and then “I need to explain to my manager (who showed up at my house on account of my being late) that my salesman duties may be a little hard right now as I’m currently a giant insect!” And it just makes everyone’s lack of compassion for him feel worse, even when you know *why*. He just wants to help his family in whatever way he can, and ultimately realizes the best thing he can do is die so he’s no longer an imposition to them. It’s bleak, to say the least.
And that’s the main difference between the book and Limbus’ counterpart. Gregor is a survivor. He pushes through, in spite of the tragedy. It absolutely fucked him up in ways he’s not fully recovered from but he keeps on going, and I LOVE that. I love that this version of him is allowed to move forward, and while I would never change the ending of the story that inspired his character (it NEEDED to be that dismal, trust me) there’s something heartwarming about a version of Gregor Samsa who was allowed to live, and given the will to live.
