THE NDP FORCED A CALL FOR A CEASEFIRE

Recently looked into being a student in Canada and it wasn't that appealing after more than like 20 minutes of looking tbh. Which sucks, because as an American and a minority I'm about to loose a lot of my rights and protections. While they're are other factors that made me say "nah" to Canadian universities, never once should the decision of "dept or rights" come into serious consideration.
I worry for anyone who didn't have the technical literacy to understand just how crappy of a decision being international can be. Hell, I'm not even very technically literate. I'm sure there's a lot I missed.
I will offer this: The university of Toronto (and I imagine other universities, I'm just acquainted with U of T) allows citizen tuition of you have a work permit and employment from a Canadian employer (THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS) and I think you have to get it in a bit before admissions. For U of T this can take yearly tuition from 30k to 3k.

Temperatures are dropping, leaves are changing and, now that pandemic restrictions have largely been lifted, universities are bustling with students. As the school year starts to pick up momentum, many international students who are seeking to enter the workplace are facing the reality of an exploitative immigration system.
According to Statistics Canada, tuition for international students in Canada is approximately $30,000 more than tuition for domestic students. While wrestling with steep prices, students in Canada on a study permit are restricted to working only 20 hours a week off campus while class is in session.
International students are treated like cash cows by universities, according to Sarom Rho, an organizer with Migrant Students United (MSU). MSU is a part of the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, a workers rights organization with a membership of migrants in farm work, care work and low wage work. Rho said the labour of current and former international students, refugees, and undocumented people often fall into the low wage category.
“For current international students, what we’re seeing here is a complete cash grab that’s targeting racialized, poor and working class families around the world,” Rho said in an interview with rabble.ca. “We’re mostly coming from the Global South. There is a bait and switch system where people are called to show up under the promise of getting permanent residency, but end up walking through a minefield of labor abuse, immense stress and exploitation.”

Secret Ballot
I was one of the more than a million Canadians that voted over Thanksgiving weekend.
I know it was a secret ballot, but I want to share. I voted Green Party because that was the same as voting “None of the Above”.
A lot of the problems we had under the Conservatives were started by the Liberals. And the Liberals were not promoting Canadian values while they voted in Parliament.
The Conservatives took those problems and made them so much worse. So much worse.
The NDP made big promises and I have voted enough by now to not trust any big political promises.
The Green Party is a joke. They have no power to do anything and this year was the first year they had enough strength to even have a condidate in my riding.
I don’t like my options. So I voted “None of the Above”. I voted Green Party.
Went to PetSmart and they didn't have any collared twinks...
I can't believe the level this country has fallen to 😞😔

After decades of painstaking and often lethal breeding experiments, the Harper Government has successfully weaponised the Canada Goose. Formerly docile and agreeable, these newly-vicious terrors are capable of skeletonising an adult cow in under three minutes. While some may question the wisdom of unleashing migratory bioweapons upon an unsuspecting planet, everyone can agree that Canada can no longer be ignored on the world stage.
ah the ukrainina nazi getting the standing ovation in the canadian parliament has reached tumblr liberals i see
Things are getting increasingly shitty in Canada for trans people and, not gonna lie, it's really stressful! Within the last month:
The Conservative Party of Canada, which is the official opposition party (AKA the party with the second most votes) and has a solid chance of forming the government in the next election, held a convention where they voted overwhelmingly in favour of creating policies to stop gender-affirming medical care for minors (link)
They also officially voted to define "woman" as "female person" and try to stop trans women from being in women's prisons, shelters, locker rooms, and washrooms
Multiple provincial governments are either enacting policies that would require parents' approval in order for trans kids to change their names or pronouns at school, or have officially said that they support forcibly outing kids (link)
A nonbinary teacher in Quebec received threats of violence for using pronoun "Mx" and other Quebec provincial parties complained about "wokeism" and said they wouldn't use the title (link)
And this doesn't include the homophobic & transphobic protests outside pride events throughout the summer or the "Save Our Children" convoy that's being planned for later this month (link), or the tons of shitty things that have happened all through this year, like tons of Ontario trans people (including me!) losing healthcare.
I'm trying to stay as optimistic as possible, knowing just how many trans people and allies there are, but sometimes! It's hard!
Anyways, if you're Canadian, please consider:
Getting involved in local, municipal politics, especially on school boards, to speak out about the need for gender-affirming policies, especially for youth
Showing up (with an organized, prepared group) to counter-protest anti-trans protesters
Keeping track of any anti- or pro-trans bills going around and contacting your MPs & MPPs to let them know what you think of them
Supporting 2SLGBTQ+ charities
Literally never ever voting conservative
And even if you're not Canadian, if you have friends who are Canadian & trans, maybe check in on them? Most Canadian trans people are pretty freaked out right now I think.

This is the most batshit crazy news headline sequence ever.

Registered sex offenders in Ontario would not be able to legally change their names if a bill that's before the legislature passes. The legislation jointly introduced this week by Progressive Conservatives Laurie Scott and Laura Smith is all but ensured passage, with their party -- which has a majority in the legislature-- supporting it. "This bill, if passed, will stop the Karla Homolkas from becoming the Leanne Teales," Smith said, referring to the infamous killer and her name change. "We just feel that the right to change somebody's name should not be abused. We want to strengthen our province's commitment to zero tolerance to these offenders and their heinous crimes and put our full support behind the victims and the families ... We have to close up this loophole."

The mainstream Canadian media is not reporting on it, but Ben & Jerry’s is trying to warn Canadians to pay fucking attention to the School Board Trustees elections.

for the most part I feel informed enough to not fall into the trap of “this is unprecedented” whenever something that just hasn’t happened in my lifetime occurs, but when it comes to the seething hatred for Justin Trudeau that’s become very common in the last three or so years I really can’t tell. It will likely all vanish within a year or so when Poilievre wins the election so I suppose it doesn’t really matter, but still.
It's not a charge.org petition it's from the house of commons so with enough signatures it will get attention

Ahmad Islaih, a 26 year old elementary school teacher, was accused of participating in a demonstration that briefly halted traffic on Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway in November. The protest against Israel’s assault on Gaza had lasted for only five minutes. After waking up Ahmed, handcuffing him and charging him with “mischief,” eight police officers sat the family, still in their pajamas, at their dining room table. While they searched their home, the front door stayed open, despite freezing winter weather and the family’s pleas to police to close it. [...] After the police left with Ahmad’s computers, electronics, and clothes, the family discovered his room “turned upside down.” Drawers had been emptied on the floor, his mattress was thrown off the bed, a vase was broken, and several boxes had been rifled through. “It took us back to our life in the West Bank,” Suha said, “when Israeli soldiers raided our home.”
