“Take a deep breath, Y/N. It will be over soon.” You breathe as you look at yourself in the mirror. You bought a new red dress to hide the fact that you still feel like an absolute mess when you go to tonight’s Christmas Eve party. But this isn’t just any Christmas Eve party. This is the first Christmas Eve party since your boyfriend of two years since college graduation is no longer by your side all night. Instead, he’ll be by the side of another woman at the same Christmas Eve party; if you’re lucky, he’ll be on the other side of the room at all times.
You wish you could say no to tonight’s festivities; but when you left the Christmas Eve party last year, you already promised to attend this one, hosted by both you and your ex’s common friend again. It took Taehyung a whole lot of begging for you to come to the party and he’s too sweet of a friend for you to give him the ultimatum it’s either him or me.
“Bring a date!” He suggested. Right, because it’s that easy. If I was lucky enough to get a date, or even a boyfriend, do you think I would have any qualms about showing up now? You think to yourself.
But as luck would have it –
Ring ring
“This is going to end in a ball of fire.” You mumble to yourself as you make your way to the door. You open up to see Hoseok dressed to the nines with a matching red tie.
“Wow. You look really nice!” You smile genuinely for the first time tonight. Hoseok steps in to your home as he adjusts his tie.
“And you look absolutely stunning in that red dress. God forbid any other woman in this world dress in red tonight, because you’d just put them all to shame.” He shouts, making you laugh. That’s what best friends do.
“I don’t know if I can do this, Hoseok. If I see him, I’m just going to feel pathetic. I have to drag my best friend into this party just to get through it while my ex has women lined up like some sort of beauty pageant, waiting to be his date.” You drop down to the arm rest of your couch and look down at your red heels. You feel Hoseok’s hands cradle your face to look up at him.
“Y/N, my job tonight will make you feel nothing but the Christmas spirit and relief that you cut ties with that guy four months ago. Tonight, pathetic won’t even exist in our world. My job is to make you shine and make him feel pathetic because he lost the best girl he can ever find.” His words brought tears to the corner of your eyes and he wipes them.
“Thank you, Hoseok.” You choke.
“Okay. Enough of this. I’ve got something that will really ruin him up tonight.” Hoseok kneels down on one knee in front of you and puts his hand in his coat pocket to pull a little black jewelry box out.
“Hoseok…”
“Y/N, will you do me the honor of being my fiancée tonight?” Hoseok opens up the jewelry box to show you a beautiful diamond ring and a matching male version.
“Are you kidding me, Hoseok?!” How can he surprise you like this right before you two go to the party? Where did he even get this?
“Well, that’s definitely the last reaction any guy would hope for when they propose to someone to be their fiancée…even if it is just for one night.” Hoseok frowns.
“Hoseok, I only asked you to be my date. I don’t need to show him up. I’m lucky if I can just make it through the night without drowning in alcohol. Not only will people see through this act, how do you expect us to play the part right?” You stand up. He stands up with you.
“Y/N, if I didn’t think I could pull this off with you, I wouldn’t have suggested this. Let me do the work and you just go with the flow.” He swipes your cheek with his thumb to comfort you.
“Hoseok, this is a bad idea…” You shiver. He is a guy talented in the arts in many forms, including some basic acting, but you’re not. You can’t promise anyone that you can have the confidence to convince people you’re engaged.
“Y/N, he needs to regret every moment his arms are wrapped around another woman. I need him to regret every moment. Cheating on you with multiple women is nothing less than an unspeakable sin. How dare anyone ever hurt my best friend?! I want his year to end with guilt and regret he can never get rid of.” You raise your eyebrows at his passion to make your ex feel pain.
“But I also need you to feel comfortable and happy tonight. If you don’t want to do this, I won’t force you.” Hoseok closes the box and stuffs it back in his pocket. He takes your hand and smiles. He leads you out the door without another word. You’re not sure if Hoseok is unhappy that you won’t play the part with him. You don’t understand why he would though. Either way, you feel kind of bad that his effort is wasted.
You two stand outside the door. You two can hear the Christmas music and the bustling inside behind the walls. You look like a rabbit caught in a trap.
Hoseok looks at you, “Are you okay, Y/N?” He interlaces his fingers with yours. You take a deep breath before you turn to him. You shove your hand into his pocket and take out the box. He watches you take the ring out. Before you put it on yourself, Hoseok takes it from you.
Before you can protest your confusion, he takes your hand and slowly slides it onto your finger himself. You look up at him and his face is absolutely gentle and happy. He takes the male version and slides it on himself without another word.
He comes closer to press a kiss on your forehead.
“We can do this, Y/N. You can do this.” His lips are still pressed against your forehead as he rings the doorbell. In a couple moments, you hear the turning of the door knob and the door opening. Light floods onto you and Hoseok as he slowly pulls his lips away from your forehead. You turn with a slightly embarrassed look on your face to see Taehyung with a surprised but happy face.
“Y/N! You made it! And who is this?” You two step into the door and Hoseok helps you remove your coat.
“I’m Hoseok, her fiancé.”
You look at Taehyung to see his reaction. His eyes are wide as he looks between you and Hoseok.
“Would you excuse us for once second?” Taehyung wheels you away from Hoseok before you can turn back to look at him.
“Y/N, are you in trouble? Is he threatening you?”
“What?”
“How come I’ve never heard of him before? Is he a loan shark and he’s just hanging by your side until you pay up? How much is it? I can help you out.”
“Taehyung,” you laugh, “I’m fine. He’s my f-fiancé.”
“Y/N,” he looks at you tenderly, “No one will think that you’re pathetic if you tell me it’s not real.” Taehyung is a lot smarter than you thought, but you really can’t drop the act when you’ve only been here for less than five minutes.
“Hey, it’s not hard to believe that I can be engaged, is it? Really. I just didn’t really tell anyone because, well, it happened only a couple days ago. And we’ve only dated for four months. I didn’t want people to look at us weird for getting engaged so early.” You spun your tale so easily, you’re not even sure how you did it.
After convincing Taehyung, he brings you back to the entrance, where Hoseok is already conversing with other people with drinks in his hand. He gives you a smile and hands you one.
“Hey. Sorry, I didn’t properly introduce myself. I’m Taehyung, host of the party. You’re Y/N’s fiancé, right? Wow. How long have you two been engaged?” You look up at Taehyung. He was double checking your story.
“Just for a couple days. We never really announced it because she’s scared people looks at her weird for being engaged since we only dated for four months.” You took a sip of your drink as you heard Hoseok spin the same tale to hide your shock. You’re shocked that his story matches yours perfectly.
Taehyung looks at the two of you one more time before shrugging, “Okay. Good enough for me. Enjoy yourselves guys!” Taehyung weaves his way through the crowd and disappears out of your sight.
You feel your shoulders drop and Hoseok put a hand at the small of your back to let you sink.
“How the hell did you know that’s the same thing I said to him earlier?”
“I didn’t. But I guessed he was asking for the story and what you would say. That’s just luck.”
“Oh my God. That was so close.” You relax and put your head against his chest.
“I’ll make it easy for you, sweetheart. You don’t even have to do anything. Just shine and I will hold you up.” He whispers in your ear. His breath is warmer than the crowd and the fire burning in the fireplace in the corner.
For over half of the night, you enjoy yourself without having to think about your ex. Hoseok is a wonderful date, and an even better fiancé. He kept you smiling all night and fit right into the crowd with everyone else. He is the epitome of a gentleman. You couldn’t have asked for anyone better to be with you tonight, and to even play this part. As of now, everyone you two met believes in your tale and sees you as someone who is better off without your ex.
You think it’s the eggnog talking, but every time Hoseok’s kisses land on your cheek, forehead, the back of your hand, or any other chaste areas, you get tingles. You realize that you’re secretly hoping for his lips to be somewhere else on your face.
Your eyes start to glaze over as you look up to him as he charms his way through everyone you two are talking to. You admire his charisma to hold the conversation. Every time someone compliments you, your dress, or how cute you two are, he adds on compliments towards you without acting like a try-hard. It seems effortless for him.
Hoseok is brushing his fingers through your hair and leans in close to your ear. You close your eyes in hopes for anything other than his next whispered words, “He’s here.”
Your eyes shoot open and you begin to pull away to look but Hoseok puts a hand at the back of your neck to keep you there.
“Don’t look. You don’t even register that he’s here. It doesn’t even matter to you since you’re with your fiancé.” Hoseok prepares your mood like a screenplay.
“Y/N, I didn’t mean to surprise you earlier with the rings, but I don’t want to surprise you now. I’m telling you right now, I’m going to kiss you. Don’t freak out, sweetheart. I’m just your fiancé kissing you. This kiss is going to make every man here feel bad they’re not with you. Please don’t pull away.” He moves his head back away from against your ear but leans in again to press his lips against yours.
Your eyes close as you feel his lips moving against yours. Your lips move with his like a dance, but it’s nothing compared to the dance his tongue makes when he slips it into your mouth. Heat runs through the course of your body and you lean in closer. He wraps his arms around your waist to support you because your knees are literally going weak.
“Ahem.” You two almost pull away, but you can’t help but chase Hoseok’s lips one more time before really pulling away.
You turn your head to glare at anyone who dares disturb you just now, but it shocks you to see your ex.
“Oh, hi Yeonseok.” You greet your ex as his eyes zone down to the hand Hoseok has on your waist.
“Hi Y/N. Hoseok.”
“Hi.” Hoseok greets. He still sounds polite, but the grip on your waist tells you that he’s nowhere near feeling polite.
“So, rumor has it that you’re engaged…” Yeonseok probes. Hoseok takes your hand to kiss the back of it and then rub the ring on your finger, “And the rumors are true. We’re engaged.”
“Wow. Isn’t that kind of fast? I mean, we broke up four months ago, but we’ve dated for two years. I would have thought that I deserved a longer mourning period.”
“A longer mourning period? You’re lucky if you got any. That privilege was lost when you decided to cheat on me, and not with just one woman. If you think our two years was that important, that special, you wouldn’t have cheated.” You spit.
Hoseok’s hand that’s around your waist moves back a bit to rub your lower back a little to help relax you. You push back down the urge to cry. Rather, you feel a fire; but that could still be the alcohol burning in your system.
“I’m sorry, Y/N.”
“Save it. The moment you left me, Hoseok was there to pick up the pieces while you pick up other women. Even in our two years together, you neglected the fact that my value was worth more than all the women you ever had sex with in these past four months. You’re not sorry, or else it wouldn’t take you so long to say it to me the moment you hear that I’m with someone else. I’m better off now: without you. Good evening.” You pull Hoseok with you and leave Yeonseok standing there.
“Y/N, that was incredible! I’m so proud of you.” Hoseok beams as you grab another champagne glass to chug down.
“Woah, girl, slow down there.” Hoseok tips back the glass away from you to see your tears starting to well up in your eyes. Hoseok’s expression change. He puts down the glass and leads you away to somewhere with less people.
When you get to the hallway, you pull on Hoseok’s suit close to you as your tears started to fall. You attempt to cover the sounds of your sobbing by pulling yourself closer into his chest. Hoseok wraps his arms around you and sways you back and forth. His cheek presses down on the top of your head. He runs his fingers through your hair with one hand and the other one rubs your back.
“You did it. You were so brave. You are brave. I – I’m just so proud at how you handled it. You did better than you expected, didn’t you? You started out tonight scared and nervous, but you own tonight. I expected that you would do just fine, and you didn’t let me down. You’re okay now, Y/N.” He soothes you. Your tears no longer fall, but your breathing is still unstable.
“You know…I had a whole speech ready too. I wanted to add in my two cents to make him regret even more, but you were able to do it all on your own. I was going to tell him that I was actually in love with you for years. I want to tell him that everything I love about you, everything that he’s missing now. I want to talk about how now I get to wake up beside you every morning and it’s better than any sunrise I have, and ever will, witness. I want thank him that because of his stupid mistakes, I was able to make the best decision I could ever make in my life. But I won’t. Because what he did hurt you and despite how we all end up, him hurting you is not okay with me. I want to tell him that I couldn’t wait to make you mine, that I bought these rings the moment he left you because I was so sure that I need you, and that I would make you mine. I want to him to go home sad and alone like the rest of his miserable life. And,” he puts his finger under your chin to tilt it up to look at him in the eyes, “I want to tell you right now that everything I just said is true.”
You can’t speak. How can you? How can you say anything after his confession when all you wanted to say to him was thank you for being here with you and suggest that you two go home and watch Christmas movies and drink some hot cocoa. Now, your mind is only filled with his words.
“Y/N?” He whispers. He recognizes the look in your eyes is anything but rejection. It makes his mouth twitch into a smile, to see that his words have rendered you speechless.
“You want to get out of here? We can go back to your place and watch some Christmas movies? Actually, let’s go back to mine. I’ve got some really good cocoa.” God, he just knows you so well.
He looks at your hand and brings it up to rub your hand as he stares at the ring.
“I know I said that I bought these for us, but I know it’s too fast to wear them for real. I don’t mean to make you feel obligated to wear it for more than just tonight. It’s your choice when you will want to wear this…or if you ever want to wear this. But I’m telling you now that this ring is still yours regardless. Legit, ‘cause look, I got your name in there!” He moves to remove the ring on your finger but you stop him. You might not want to wear it for real right now, but you know you don’t want to take it off just yet. He looks at you expectantly.
You lean up to kiss him and he immediately drops your hand to bring your face closer. He presses himself so close to you that he backs you up against the wall. Between him and the wall, you’re still not close enough. He brings one hand down to your waist to pull you closer against him and you wrap your arms around his neck.
Who knows how long you two were there making out, but it’s long enough for you two to hear people start chanting the countdown to midnight. And last you checked, it was a long while before that.
3…2…1…
He pulls away to breathe out, “Merry Christmas.”
