BUT what if.
WHAT IF the live action actually does well?
What if Netflix decides to renew it?
What if they decide to do more than three seasons?
What if they lengthen Aang's journey of mastering the elements while building on the story of the resistance within the Fire Nation?
What if they decide to do more than three seasons and we get to see more of the Southern Water Tribe Warriors?
WHAT IF WE GET MORE TIME WITH THE SWAMP BENDERS?!
What if they extend the story arc for the preparation to invade the Fire Nation?
WHAT IF WE GET MORE OF THE WHITE LOTUS?!
Nobody would have to accept anything from the live action as canon (except for Oma and Shu because they're badass lesbians now) but would it be great to see some more world building?
Personally, I'd love to see more about the resistance within the Fire Nation and more of the resistance in the Earth Kingdom.

Netflix, I don't appreciate you playing Leaves From the Vine every time Zuko and Iroh have an emotional moment on screen.
I liked the live action.
I just started ATLA, and I’m throughly enjoying it. I just need to know why Uncle Iroh retired and what he means by (spoiler for like first few episodes ðŸ˜) ‘one of my greatest defeats’ when he visits a place. Did he retire because of the defeat(?) or because he was simply too old?

so, i finished the ATLA LA the other day and like
of course it’s not a carbon copy of the cartoon. there would be no point in making it if it was going to be. if you ever want to be satisfied with an adaptation you have to go into it seeing it as its own thing. there’s going to be plot changes, live action shows are a wildly different media to cartoon shows (and i do think avatar is the type of show that did have to be animated, so much of the development came from filler which you can’t really do in live action) and when you properly take that into account, they did a damn good job.
yes, there’s some scenes and lines that i am sad didn’t make it in. but also, the characters still feel like the characters. the visuals, costumes, bending effects and choreography are freaking awesome.
i honestly think some people just want to be mad at this show without even giving it a chance because of how bad the last one is and that’s so unfair to all the people who worked really hard on it.
if it’s not your cup of tea, that’s absolutely fine. ATLA is a show that is better suited to cartoon media, we all know that, the cartoon still exists just fine. but don’t shit on people for enjoying the live action just because you don’t, yeah?
Going to say this now even though I barely post here::::: Adaptations are never meant to be a 1:1 recreation of the original source material. The goal is never to recreate the exact same experience in a different format, the whole point of remaking something in a different format is to make something new.
I don’t understand why people are out here acting like the new Netflix ATLA walked onscreen, shot the original with a 44 and declared itself the new ATLA. I’m not saying you can’t criticise anything about it or any other adaptation, I just think a lot of people need to remember that an adaptation that gives you the same experience and explores the exact same themes and doesn’t elaborate on or look at things in different angles would be utterly pointless.
Are you looking forward to the new live action ATLA show?
Honestly… not really? Like, as much as I want to be excited that we’re getting new Avatar stuff, I’m not feeling very good about the quality of the new show.
On the one hand, it is good that Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are back to work on the new show. On the other hand, they also worked on The Legend of Korra and the Avatar comics, neither of which I was a fan of. And the fact that this new show is going to be without the help of series director and head writer Aaron Ehasz, who came up with some of the show’s best ideas, also concerns me.
On the one hand, it’s great that they announced that they would be giving the new live-action adaptation a racially accurate cast of POC actors, as one thing that was criticized in M. Night Shyamalan’s much maligned adaptation was the whitewashing of many of the characters. On the other hand, let’s not forget that Shyamalan’s movie was inherently flawed. I mean, we aren’t seriously going to pretend that the earthbender prison scene would have been any better with a racially accurate cast, are we? No, there are more aspects of making a good show, like the quality of the writing.
And… okay, let’s be honest: How many times has there been a live-action adaptation of a popular animated property that was actually good? The only ones I can think of are Scooby-Doo (2002) and its sequel, Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed (2004). And even those have very mixed reception.
Moreover, rebooting it just feels unnecessary. What I’d prefer Bryke do at this point is abandon Avatar and work on some new projects. Stop beating a dead horse. Come up with new ideas, new characters, a new world. That’s what Aaron Ehasz has done with The Dragon Prince.
So I’m trying not to be too pessimistic about the new show, but I’m still not looking forward to it, no.
The new pictures of the Avatar: The Last Airbender live action show on Netflix looked promising. I’m holding out hope that this is at least a decent show.
Although I’m not sure if this will be basically a retelling of the same story or if they’ll make some significant changes. It would be interesting to see the storyline from a more mature perspective though.
