Yet Another Situation Where A Woman Of Colour Was Questioned Her Femininity Because She Doesnt Fit Into

Yet another situation where a woman of colour was questioned her femininity because she doesn’t fit into eurocentric ideals of what “woman” or “feminine” looks like.

Time and again women of colour are subjected to this ridicule and scrutiny and it’s downright disgusting as well as pathetically ignorant.

Woman of colour have more testosterone than white women. Women from low socio economic backgrounds sometimes look more masculine/physically fit than women from urban/wealthy backgrounds.

I’m sorry she doesn’t look like Barbie and can knock out her opponent in 46 fucking seconds. That doesn’t make her man. That makes her strong as fuck.

If you see a woman perform extremely well and possess God-like strength and immediately question whether she is actually a woman, maybe you’re not the feminist you think you are.

Maybe you just don’t believe in women at all.

PS - As always, fuck JK Rowling.

‘Stop killing us!’: Thousands march to protest against femicide in Kenya

Thousands of people have gathered to protest in cities and towns in Kenya against the recent slayings of more than a dozen women.

The anti-femicide demonstration on Saturday was the largest event ever held in the country against sexual and gender-based violence.

In the capital, Nairobi, protesters wore T-shirts printed with the names of women who became homicide victims this month. The crowd, composed mostly of women, brought traffic to a standstill.

“Stop killing us!” the demonstrators shouted as they waved signs with messages such as “There is no justification to kill women.”

The crowd in Nairobi was hostile to attempts by the parliamentary representative for women, Esther Passaris, to address them. Accusing Passaris of remaining silent during the latest wave of killings, protesters shouted her down with chants of “Where were you?” and “Go home!”

“A country is judged by not how well it treats its rich people, but how well it takes care of the weak and vulnerable,” said Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri, who was among the demonstrators.

Kenyan media outlets have reported the slayings of at least 14 women since the start of the year, according to Patricia Andago, a data journalist at media and research firm Odipo Dev who also took part in the march.

Odipo Dev reported this week that news accounts showed at least 500 women were killed in acts of femicide from January 2016 to December 2023. Many more cases go unreported, Andago said.

Two cases that gripped Kenya this month involved two women who were killed at Airbnb accommodations. The second victim was a university student who was dismembered and decapitated after she reportedly was kidnapped for ransom.

Theuri said cases of gender-based violence take too long to be heard in Kenyan court, which he thinks emboldens perpetrators to commit crimes against women.

“As we speak right now, we have a shortage of about 100 judges. We have a shortage of 200 magistrates and adjudicators, and so that means that the wheel of justice grinds slowly as a result of inadequate provisions of resources,” he said.

keep get lot of “even though am only low support needs / only level 1 / verbal / etc… struggle a lot with autism…” n with either implied or explicitly said “not as bad as higher support needs / higher level / etc” “can’t imagine what it like for [ ]”

n as higher support need level 2/3 nonverbal autistic, want say:

yes of course be aware we exist n sometimes face extra stuff extra struggle extra ableism advocate with us be aware of experiences you may not have but

you all have just as much claim to autism & autism as disability as us

don’t need tiptoe around us

low support needs is support needs & level 1 autism is autism is disability. n struggle around that is true struggle valid struggle

don’t need be higher support needs level 2&3 semiverbal nonverbal severe autism etc to be struggle

compulsive anxiety of Must Make Sure Am Not Speak Over so say “even though only 1/LSN”, overly done, actually can feed into idea that only HrSN 2/3 struggle true struggle valid struggle n LSN level 1 not struggle enough not valid enough n so if struggle, must be HrSN 2/3. it actually water down downplay all amounts of support low/medium/high/everything in between, downplay all levels of autism 1 2 & 3

last thing want see is you all downplay self for so long n burn out n backfire, “what about me? why only about HSN level 3 nonverbal people?” n swing other way - this harm all autistics, you n us

confidently say “am low support needs autism n i struggle” “am level 1 autistic n i struggle” actually best way help all autistics, both you n me

Hey guys, Bilal ( @bilal-salah0 ) reached out to me recently to share his story with you guys so take a moment to read through this

Please pay attention, dont scroll away

Hey Guys, Bilal ( @bilal-salah0 ) Reached Out To Me Recently To Share His Story With You Guys So Take

Bilal Salah is a 22 year old who left his beloved city behind and moved to Germany a few months before to better support his family financially and to achieve his hopes and dreams away from the violence at home.

But since the genocide began and with no permanent ceasefire in sight, he has been living in constant fear over the safety of his family of 18 members that he had to leave behind in Gaza. He has been tirelessly fundraising to evacuate them to safety since.

During the past few months his family has faced a lot of difficulties. They have been constantly displaced time and time again, fleeing from the bombardment by the IOF ever since the family home, that had just finished construction right before last october, had been demolished.

I cannot even imagine how difficult every shift must have been with 8 children to care for, including 3 newborn babies.

Hey Guys, Bilal ( @bilal-salah0 ) Reached Out To Me Recently To Share His Story With You Guys So Take

They are now living in a tent in a refugee camp in Rafah city where basic amenities are denied to them.

In his own words:

They have to strive and risk their lives every day to provide the bare minimum of food and water for everyone, and even that is not always available. Due to the siege imposed on Gaza the markets are almost entirely empty, prices are rocketing, and little to no humanitarian aid is allowed to enter the strip.

In addition to food and water scarcity, the healthcare system in Rafah, has almost entirely collapsed. As a result, my family’s health, already at risk due to malnutrition, poor hygiene, little access to sanitation and the harsh weather conditions in the tent, is now also in serious peril because of the shortage of medicines and medical care.

The three newborns face the same threats, if not greater ones; as baby essentials including formula are barely available. Moreover, the only medical assistance they and their mothers have access to is that of an overcrowded maternity clinic or a field hospital with limited capabilities and equipment.

psychotic besties. I mean this dead seriously: do not share the nature of your psychosis online. do not tell internet strangers what triggers you. the internet is already cruel enough to those of us who experience psychosis, and there are people out there who will think it’s funny or interesting to use your psychosis against you. please be safe out there!

and anyone who likes to trigger peoples’ psychosis on purpose? fucking stop doing that

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises for "Content"

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"

I got this message from a bot, and honestly? If I was a bit younger and not such a jaded bitch with a career in tech, I might have given it an honest try. I spent plenty of time in a tough situation without access to any mental health resources as a teen, and would have been sucked right in.

Chatting right from your phone, and being connected with people who can help you? Sounds nice. Especially if you believe the testimonials they spam you with (tw suicide / self harm mention in below images)

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"
KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"

But I was getting a weird feeling, so I went to read the legalese.

I couldn't even get through the fine-print it asked me to read and agree to, without it spamming the hell out of me. Almost like they expect people to just hit Yes? But I'm glad I stopped to read, because:

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"

What you say on there won't be confidential. (And for context, I tried it out and the things people were looking for help with? I didn't even feel comfortable sharing here as examples, it was all so deeply personal and painful)

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"

Also, what you say on there? Is now...

Koko's intellectual property - giving them the right to use it in any way they see fit, including

Publicly performing or displaying your "content" (also known as your mental health crisis) in any media format and in any media channel without limitation

Do this indefinitely after you end your account with them

Sell / share this "content" with other businesses

Any harm you come to using Koko? That's on you.

And Koko won't take responsibility for anything someone says to you on there (which is bleak when people are using it to spread Christianity to people in crisis)

I was curious about their business model. They're a venture-capitol based tech startup, owned by Airbnb, the famous mental health professionals with a focus on ethical business practices./s They're also begging for donations despite having already been given 2.5 million dollars in research funding. (If you want a deep dive on why people throw crazy money at tech startups, see my other post here)

They also use the data they gather from users to conduct research and publish papers. I didn't find them too interesting - other than as a good case study of "People tend to find what they are financially incentivized to find". Predictably, Koko found that Kokobot was beneficial to its users.

So yeah, being a dumbass with too much curiosity, I decided to use the Airbnb-owned Data-Mining Mental Health Chatline anyway. And if you thought it was dangerous sounding from the disclaimers? Somehow it got worse.

(trigger warning / discussions of child abuse / sexual abuse / suicide / violence below the cut - please don't read if you're not in a good place to hear about negligence around pretty horrific topics.)

I first messed around with the available options, but then I asked it about something obviously concerning, saying I had a gun and was going to shoot myself. It responded... Poorly. Imagine the vibes of trying to cancel Comcast, when you're suicidal.

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"
KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"

Anyway, I tried again to ask for help about something else that would be concerning enough for any responsible company to flag. School was one of their main options, which seems irresponsible - do you really think a child in crisis would read that contract?

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"
KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"

I told it about a teacher at school trying to "be my boyfriend", and it immediately suggested I help someone else while I wait for help. I was honestly concerned that it wasn't flagged before connecting. Especially when I realized it was connecting me to children.

I first got someone who seemed to be a child in an abusive home. (Censored for their privacy.) I declined to talk to them because despite being an adult and in an OK mental place - I knew I'm not equipped to counsel a kid through that. If my act of being another kid in crisis was real? Holy shit.

Remember- if my BS was true, that kid would be being "helped" by an actively suicidal kid who's also being groomed by a teacher. Their pipeline for "helpers" is the same group of people looking for help.

I skipped a number of messages, and they mostly seemed to be written by children and young adults with nowhere else to turn. Plus one scary one from an adult whose "problem" was worrying that they'd been inappropriate with a female student, asking her to pull her skirt down "a little" in front of the class. Koko paired this person with someone reporting that they were a child being groomed by a teacher. Extremely dangerous, and if this was an episode of Black Mirror? I'd say it was a little too on the nose to be believable.

I also didn't get the option to get help without being asked... Er... Harassed... to help others. If I declined, I'd get the next request for help, and the next. If I ignored it, I got spammed by the "We lost you there!" messages, asking if I'd like to pick up where I left off, seeing others' often triggering messages while waiting for help, including seriously homophobic shit. I was going into this as an experiment, starting from a good mental place, and being an adult with coping skills from an actual therapist, and I still felt triggered by a lot of what I read. I can't imagine the experience someone actually in crisis would be having.

My message was starting to feel mild in comparison to what some people were sharing - but despite that I was feeling very uneasy about my message being shown to children. There didn't seem to be a way to take it back either.

Then I got a reply about my issue. It was very kind and well meaning, but VERY horrifying. Because it seemed to be written by a child, or someone too young to understand that "Do have feelings for the teacher who's grooming you? If you don't, you should go talk to him." Is probably THE most dangerous advice possible.

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises For "Content"

Not judging the author - I get the impression they're probably a child seeking help themselves and honestly feel horribly guilty my BS got sent to a young person and they wanted to reply. Because WTF. No kid should be in that position to answer my fucked up question or any of the others like it.

---

Anyway, what can you do if this concerns you, or you've had a difficult experience on Koko, with no support from them or Tumblr?

Get on their LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/kokocares/) and comment on their posts! You may also want to tag the company's co-founders in your comments - their accounts are listed on the company page.

There's no way to reach support through chat, and commenting on a company's LinkedIn posts / tagging the people responsible is the best way to get a quick response to a sensitive issue - as their investors and research funders follow those posts, and companies take it seriously if safety issues are brought up in front of the people giving them millions of dollars.

I think it's very important to mention the Met's shitty practices with stolen art and also the ticket price while people are starving at home in the US and abroad in countries like Palestine (Palestine protestors are outside the MET). While the met does have a history of not supporting zionism (this is also pretty weak tbh, they seemed more scared of pro-Palestinian people than they did of supporting genocide), it's also ultimately an organization that wants to make money and the met gala is extremely out of touch.

everyone please read this and share if you can.

Brazil is going through one of the worst climatic crisis ever seen.

i live in the southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. we have been suffering from extreme, nonstop rainstorms for a week now. the rivers are flooding, reaching 4-6 meters above their natural level. people are being rescued by helicopters, neighborhoods are being evacuated. entire cities are slowly but surely becoming submerged in water. 60 people missing and counting. 32 deaths and counting.

and this is not new. last november also had a flood like this one. 50 dead, many material losses. it happened again this january, with thousands being left without power or water for days.

three catastrophical disasters within less than a year. three disasters only a few months apart.

this is not natural.

unsustainable agricultural practices and politics led to this. a complete disregard for nature led to this. greed led to this. always greed.

when it comes to the climate crisis, i cannot stress this enough: we need to act now if we still want to live. disasters like this are going to happen more often and they're going to be much, much worse. this flood is being considered the worst climatic catastrophe in the history of my state. i don't know how long it will take for another bigger one to happen and take its place. i just know it will be sooner than it should.

People who believe in "narcissistic abuse" are never able to agree on a definition.

Some say narcissistic abuse is a set of abusive patterns that are unique to narcissistic personality disorder. Some say narcissistic abuse has nothing to do with narcissistic personality disorder.

Some say narcissists are physically incapable of understanding how their actions affect others. Some say narcissists are masters at understanding how their actions affect others and don't care.

They absolutely must use the word "narcissistic" to the point that they literally think they're being silenced if you welcome their entire story as long as they take the word "narcissistic" out of it, but they can't even define what "narcissistic" means.

“Everything is ableism these days”

Have you considered the fact that disabled people seeing ableism in every day language and life says more about society and its culture/history than it does about disabled people as a whole?
