Conservators âspeechlessâ that Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroeâs dress to Met Gala

âThe Met Gala is now part of the garmentâs history â and it didnât need to be.â
Textile conservators and fashion curators are appalled that beauty mogul Kim Kardashian donned Marilyn Monroeâs iconic Jean Louis gown for the 2022 Met Gala. Monroeâs show-stopping garment became famous 60 years ago when the Hollywood legend wore it to sing a breathless âHappy Birthdayâ to President Kennedy.
Kardashian, a pop culture phenom in her own right, became the only other person to slip into the historic garment for Mondayâs Met Gala, a âgilded glamour"-themed affair at New Yorkâs Metropolitan Museum of Art. âThe Kardashiansâ star joined hundreds toasting the opening of the Costume Instituteâs newest exhibition, âIn America: An Anthology of Fashion,â which examines historical context and tells stories of unsung heroes in early American fashion design.
âIâm frustrated because it sets back what is considered professional treatment for historic costume,â says Sarah Scaturro, chief conservator at the Cleveland Museum of Art and formerly a conservator at the Metâs Costume Institute. âIn the â80s, a bunch of costume professionals came together to state a resolution that historic costume should not be worn. So my worry is that colleagues in historic costume collections are now going to be pressured by important people to let them wear garments.â
Cara Varnell, a longtime independent art conservator specializing in historic dress, put it this way: âWe just donât wear archived historic pieces,â she says. âObviously, if you have a Charles James hanging in your grandmotherâs closet and you want to wear it, fine. But something thatâs archived means it has enough cultural importance that we value it and want to save it. The dress represents something very important â itâs part of our collective cultural heritage. Iâm speechless over it.â
The reality TV star took on the sartorial soireeâs theme and historical context requisites by selecting Monroeâs bejeweled gown, which she described as âthe original naked dress.â The âSome Like It Hotâ star herself had to be sewn into the piece ahead of her sensual 1962 performance at a Madison Square Garden fundraiser that took place a few months before her death.
âThe idea really came to me after the gala in September last year. I thought to myself, what would I have done for the American theme if it had not been the Balenciaga look? Whatâs the most American thing you can think of? And thatâs Marilyn Monroe,â Kardashian, 41, told Vogue. âFor me the most Marilyn Monroe moment is when she sang âHappy Birthday,â to JFK, it was that look.â

Monroeâs gown, the most expensive dress ever sold at auction, is made of a delicate fabric called souffle. Itâs stretchy and resilient when itâs new, but becomes weaker and more brittle with age. Whatâs more, itâs embroidered with heavy beadwork â thousands of hand-sewn beads. âGravity can do a lot of damage,â says Kevin Jones, curator of the FIDM Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. âWhenever you move, something is giving way, even if you canât see it. Under a microscope it would show all these little splits. And over time that would be a big problem. â
Whatâs at risk, Jones adds, is more than just a dress. The garment is a vehicle channeling history â âit speaksâ â and damage to it has cultural consequences for generations to come.
âOur job is to get the garment to the next generation with as little damage as possible, so that 500 years from now, these objects are around to talk about our history, our collective history as people, design, technology, arts and culture,â Jones says. âAll of that gets blended into a single object, in this case a garment. It represents a moment in time.â
Ripleyâs Believe It or Not in Orlando lent the gown â believed to be valued now at more than $10 million â to Kardashian after acquiring it in 2016 for nearly $5 million. In a statement, Ripleyâs said that it âstrongly feels that this dress, with both political and pop culture significance, is the most famous item of clothing from twentieth century culture.â (The gown and some of Monroeâs and Kardashianâs accessories will be put on display at Ripleyâs Believe It or Not Hollywood for a limited time beginning Memorial Day weekend.)
âWe are truly proud to be the stewards of such an iconic artifact and are excited to be able to add to its cultural significance with Kim Kardashian, who is sharing the story of Marylin Monroe and her iconic career with an entirely new generation,â Ripleyâs vice president of publishing and licensing, Amanda Joiner, said in a statement Monday.
Itâs worth noting that Ripleyâs Believe It or Not is not a museum. Itâs part of a privately owned, for-profit âattractions company,â as it refers to itself, with themed locations around the world. While Kardashian didnât pay the company a fee to don the dress, she donated money â Ripleyâs would not disclose how much â to two organizations on Ripleyâs behalf.
âSheâll be donating to two Florida-based organizations â a goodwill gesture in appreciation of us allowing her to wear the dress,â Joiner said in an interview. âWeâre not disclosing their names, but theyâre organizations weâve worked with in the past, and theyâre youth-oriented in arts and underserved communities.â
Kardashian, the Skims shapewear founder, who went blond for the event and ascended the Metâs Grand Staircase along with her boyfriend, Pete Davidson, also said she didnât initially fit into the dress. She shed 16 pounds for the occasion because she wasnât allowed to alter the gown and reportedly had to drape a fur stole over the partially fastened zipper. After taking photos in the dress, Kardashian changed into a replica dress for the gala, Ripleyâs said, noting that âgreat care was taken to preserve this piece of history.â
Kardashian also said that armed guards and gloves were required at her fitting.
âWith input from garment [conservators], appraisers, archivists, and insurance, the garmentâs condition was top priority,â Ripleyâs said. âNo alterations were made to the dress.â
John Corcoran, director of exhibits and archives for Ripleyâs Believe It or Not, who is in charge of conservation, added that Kardashian could wear the dress only after adhering to guidelines. That included no body makeup, no alterations and wearing the garment only for the red carpet portion of the evening. âNo damage occurred at last nightâs event,â Corcoran said in a statement, adding that Kardashian âhas become a steward â and added to â its history.â
But Scaturro says there are still inevitable dangers: perspiration, sunlight and oxygen, in addition to changes in temperature and humidity, pose threats to such a fragile garment. âPutting it on a human body will damage it no matter how careful you are,â she says.
On Wednesday, the dress will return to the Ripleyâs vault in Orlando, Fla., Corcoran notes. He describes the space as a dark, temperature- and humidity-controlled room. In order to maintain the fabricâs integrity, the dress will not be washed. It will be housed in a case, mounted on a form and covered in acid-free, cotton muslin.
âThe form helps prevent folds and stress on the dress,â Corcoran says, âwhile the muslin protects it from light, humidity and environmental contaminants.â
How will the dress get to Orlando? On Kardashianâs private jet, Ripleyâs said.
Fashion historian Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell, author of âWorn on This Day: The Clothes That Made History,â says the whole incident is a bit meta.
âThe Met Gala is now part of the garmentâs history â and it didnât need to be,â she says. âI was kind of baffled by the whole decision to wear it at all because it didnât really fit the theme of the night â and they made a full replica, so why not just wear the replica?â
If thereâs an upside to the incident, some curators and conservators said, it would be creating conversation around fashion conservation. But the risks outweigh the reward, Jones says.
âIf you wear something, thereâs stress and strain,â he says. âOnce itâs damaged itâs always damaged. You canât go back.â

CAPABLE OF LOVE (JASON TODD) - "and i think i need a picture 'cause it's never enough, to see you smilin in my mind when i lay still in the dark"
note/cw ~ GN!reader, fluff, angst, suggestive (if you squint), if the ending seems rushed it's because it was

âSo, I was cleaning out my camera roll recently, and I realized we donât really have that many pictures of usâ you say from behind the menu in your hands, pretending to casually browse through.
He shows no reaction besides a short hum of acknowledgement, instead opting to continue perusing the multitude of diner food options in front of him.
âLike, weâve been together for months, and I donât think weâve ever taken any pictures to um- commemorate anything you know?â Your eyes move up, peeking over the menu trying to see if this information garnered any kind of reaction from him.
It didnât.
âAnd the few we do have, your face is super blurry in themâŠProbably because every time I pull out a camera, you turn away.â
He looks up for a second, but very soon turns his attention back to the menu, showing no other signs of interest.
A small sigh escapes your lips, and you lean back against the booth chair, now addressing the hunger in your stomach instead of the stubborn man in front of you refusing to acknowledge the very serious issue youâve presented him.
Your hands flip through the worn pages, and you weigh your options, eventually deciding on a seasonal pancake stack listed in the way back that piqued your interest. Closing your menu and placing it down in front of you, you cross your arms and try to look anywhere but him.
âI have pictures of you.â
Your eyes dart to Jason, whose nose is still buried in between pages of burgers and omelets.
âLots of them, actually.â He says, raising his eyes to look at you.
His full attention is on your face now, and no longer the menu.
âSome of you smiling, some of you laughing, some when youâre not lookingâŠâ His eyes go back down to the laminated paper in front of him.
âSome of you nakedâŠâ He trails off, and you recede even farther back into the seat, a heat creeping up your neck and towards your cheeks.
âThatâs not what I meant, and you know it.â
A stupid smile sits on his face, and he closes the menu, sliding it off to the side.
âNot sure what youâre talking about sweetheart.â
âJust because youâre handsome doesnât mean you get to play dumb.â You say, sitting up, regaining your composure. âLook, I know youâre not very fond of cameras but a few pictures of us together on my phone isnât gonna blow your cover.â Sympathy laces your words, and you look at him with a softened gaze.Â
He rests his forearms on the table and leans forward slightly, teal eyes boring into you with a light playfulness but you can tell how badly he wants you to drop the topic.
âI just want a picture, one picture.â It comes out quietly, barely above a whisper; something only you two can hear. âFor when youâre gone, and if you donât come backâŠâ
The smile drops from his face when he notices the shift in your tone, âIâm not-â
âYou canât guarantee that.â You say, holding back something threatening to break through. âJust one, for the nights when Iâm alone and my memory isnât enough. Please.â
He clenches his jaw and tilts his head down before sliding to the edge of the seat, and out of the booth.
Your eyes follow him as he stands up, and youâre sure heâs gonna leave. You shouldnât have pushed him; it wasnât your place.
But instead, he slides into the seat beside you, and turns in your direction as much as he possibly can. Gently taking your head in his hands, he places a soft kiss on your forehead, right below your hairline.Â
A single tear spills down your cheek and he swipes it away with his thumb, caressing the spot where it was.
Leaning in, he presses his lips against yours in a sweet kiss youâre eager to reciprocate. It serves as a mutual apology, an âIâm sorryâ from the both of you.
âI didnât realize it meant that much to you.â He says between breaths, hands still cradling your face. âBut if it really is that important then we can take the picture.â
âYeah?â
âWe can take a million pictures if you want.â
A giddy laugh escapes your lips, âyou mean that?â
âMhm, some of us smiling, some of us laughing, some of us-â
âNaked?â
A grin spreads across his face, âhey, you said it not me.â And he leans in to kiss you one more time before sticking his hand in your pocket and pulling out your phone.
âWanna do the honors?â He says, holding the device out for you to grab.
You take it into your hand and swipe to open the camera, situating your arms in front of you to get your faces in frame.Â
âOkay now look into the lens,â you say, pointing to the small black dot and maneuvering yourself to be close to him. Your head is tilted, tucked into the crook of his neck, and he has a fond smile on his face.
â3âŠ2âŠ1.â Your finger taps the white button, capturing the moment; and you wait a split second before opening it up in your camera roll.
Itâs a sweet picture, the two of you nestled next to each other with the tufted red leather of the booth seat serving as a background, and you canât help the smile that appears on your face upon seeing your first real picture together.
âOh, sorry.â Jason mumbles, âI wasnât looking at the cameraâŠwe can retake it if you want-âÂ
âNo!â you cut him off quickly, âI love it. Itâs perfect.â
And you meant that, because he may not have been looking at the camera, but he was looking at you with so much love in his eyes that any other picture you might take would never come close to this one.
