Just a thought I have, but: canonly Grant doesn't exist, so remus would have to spend 12 years alone.
What if instead of mopping around he found a job as a high school teacher in a quiet town in Scotland bought a lovely tiny house with a lot of plants and spent his days listening to music, reading, writing a book all dedicated to sirius and adopting stray cats and dogs.
One day he found a black cat sitting in his classroom window and took him home. This cat was regulus black.
After he got out of the cave he couldn't change back bc his mental state was awful. Especially after James and lily have died.
Remus recognized him and took care of him till he successfully changed back into his human form.
And there they lived as best friends till remus was called to teach in hogwarts.
