watching back rosinante's stretch of episodes just because it's been a while and i realized:
does the scene on the cliff confirm that rosinante is canonically a depressed, sappy, sobbing drunk? i chose to believe so.

CROW
the crow is a very interesting, complex familiar to have, and seems to have a lot of personality to its behavior. though it is seen by some as representing evil, it is in fact a sign of luck as well, either good or bad, and is strongly tied with magic as well. despite its worse side of its reputation, it is not a trickster, but in fact very wise and adaptable. in the same way, you are a very intelligent and creative individual, though you may be misunderstood by your peers. the crow familiar brings good luck to their master, acts as a mentor or guidance to them, and inspires them with bright and creative ideas.
This familiar represents

closeness to magic
luck
intelligence
wisdom

being misunderstood

【 h.c. 】 ー retirement (post-marine life).
in verses where rosinante survives minion island (either escaping with law, or being separated due to his injures) his career choice he decides when he’s done with the marines for good is the furthest thing from active combat he can imagine: farming.
when living with law, it started simply as rosinante growing their own crops (in addition to hunting their own meat & fish—thankfully, his devil fruit was fantastic for this) to cut costs now that he no longer had doflamingo around to funnel them money & his own savings were spent. he’s always been a fan of fresh fruits & vegetables; cabbage lettuce, plums—probably a byproduct of growing up in sengoku’s household alongside so many herbivorous pets like goats, sheep, and rabbits.
.
without law, he just was desperate for a new purpose/something to distract himself, and farming seemed like a strenuous enough job to do just that. after recovering enough to live on his own again, he moved to a secluded cottage in the north blue (with more spare bedrooms & space than he’ll ever need, always ready & waiting for a certain somebody, should they stop by) in the hopes of stumbling across law. there’s probably some underlying projection there he doesn’t quite realize, either: if he can’t nurture law & help him grow anymore, then at least he can grow & nurture everything else.
when they reunite (or when law grows up) rosinante even goes out of his way to research the types of medicinal plants & herbs he notices law likes to keep around and starts a small garden exclusively for those. if nothing else, he hopes it entices law to keep coming back to visit him when he inevitably goes out to sea.
【 h.c. 】 ー glass ankle. (chronic ankle instability).
rosinante's body is fucked.
there's no other way to describe it: it's just fucked. before the abuse suffered at the lynch mobs, before he ever saw any combat as a marine, or with doffy’s crew—he was his own single biggest threat.
from the time he could walk (which wasn't until three years old) he'd been trapped in a cycle: clumsiness, injury, clumsiness, injury. clumsiness would inevitably lead to injury, and injury would inevitably lead to more clumsiness. he was pigeon-toed with a shuffling, wobbly gait, slow, and so, so doomed.
some injuries healed fully, while others left permanent reminders: nerve damage from a broken hand five years prior still made it impossible to hold certain things without the fear of a muscle spasm or cramp making him drop it. broken toes from three separate occasions were still slightly crooked. a herniated disk plagued him with back pain. patches of skin had grown over with dense, rough scar tissue from years of nicks with kitchen knives & burns with his cigarette lighter. knees locked up. joints stiffened & cracked. fucked.
soft braces, compression sleeves & stockings were just another article of clothing as essential as a shirt or pants. his scent carried undercurrents of peppermint from the ointments he massaged into aching muscles. each morning he woke up & each night before he slept, he stretched his entire bodyーanywhere from ten minutes to an hour, depending on the day.
however, nothing caused him more trouble than his left ankle.
it was his single worst injury—both the severity, and the memories he associated with it. there were two.
the 1st was at six. slow & clumsy, it was inevitable he was the first captive of the mobs. what exactly would happen depended on the captorーbut he learned quickly he'd be in far less pain when he didn't try to escape or resist. escape attempts got your ankle shattered. resistance got you dragged through the streets by rope.
the 2nd was at eight, running from his brother after he murdered their father. he didn't even think about it, he just started screaming and ran. he ran faster than he ever had before, with no clear direction, nor was he watching his stepsーand therein spelled disaster. lost in the woods, he tumbled. hard. he dislocated the already maluinioned bones and spent the next several hours crawling until he came upon his savior: sengoku.
years of orthopedic braces & shoes, physical therapy, and surgery has brought rosinante to a place where it was bearable (some days, even blissfully painless) to walk & run on, but the muscles still remained weak. the biggest culprit was the ankle’s lack of mobility/tendency to stiffen. it meant sometimes he couldn't quite correct his footing fast enough when a slippery or uneven surface caused a stumble, or friendly shove threw his body weight off-center. falls were common. expected. but, he can’t help it.
rosinante's body is fucked.
12. What would you say is the most unique trait about your character?
his clumsiness is certainly something. though, i think the most unique think about rosinante is how he views/handles doflamingo in spite of everything he knows.
he's very much aware of the person his brother is; they never go the cliche route of having him trying to appeal to doflamingo's emotions because he knows him enough to know it's pointless. he knows his thought processes well enough to know when he's in danger, or what doflamingo's motivations might be, and he straight up calls him inhuman and a beast. but, the language he uses when talking about him is not the words of someone who hates their brother.
obviously, when it came time to try & kill himーhe couldn't do it, with doflamingo even being so confident in that that he allowed rosinante to draw a gun on him, let him talk for several minutes, and even stopped other crew members from getting involved. but, there's also this:
"俺のもってきは弟して兄いどーふぃの暴走止めるのことだ." "as his younger brother, what i want is stop my older brother from running wild."
the japanese subs on crunchyroll are fine, but a more literal translation of what rosinante says makes it clear that rosinante sees it as his responsibility as doflamingo's family to essentially "save him from himself".
also, the only time rosinante doesn't even address him by his nickname (ie. emotionally separating himself) is when he's addressing him in an official capacity as a marine.
because, and doflamingo said it best: he's just like his father. he still loves doflamingo in spite of everything. he's a monster, and irredeemable, and would kill rosinante the second he could gain something from himーbut rosinante loves him.
some people might consider that foolishーloving someone who clearly doesn't return the sentiment and (in worst cases) is actively cruel & abusive to youーbut there's something really powerful about here, because it illustrates the main takeaway from the brothers' story: doflamingo embodies hate, and rosinante embodies love.

11: Are there some things you dislike about how the show/series/etc. portray the character you have picked up? If so, what?
well, obviously rosinante is both (1) not in the story for very long and (2) not really a 'character' but rather a memory that gives law motivation & purpose, so there isn't too much to nitpick since he was never meant to be defined much at all outside of the idealized version in law's head. though, if i had to pick something (again, not much to pick from) i did actually mention one nitpick i have yesterday: the way they (the show, but also some of the fandom, too) talk about his devil fruit is very weird?
luckily, he does get a moment to showcase how great it actually is at the very endーbut, i'm sorry.... someone making it physically impossible for you to hear them coming as they hunt you down is terrifying as hell? what do people mean 'useless' or 'lame'? do people not realize how much the average person relies on hearing?
if i was diez barrels i would have lost my mind the moment all the lights went out and some dude i didn't hear coming punched me in the face. hello?
12: What would you say is the most unique trait about your character?
[answered here]
14: Are there some characters from the franchise you can’t stand?
trebol. he's like a less cool, less charismatic doflamingo which is weird considering he raised/groomed him. but i think the whole point of his character is he's meant to be annoying because, like, doflamingo, that's what he wantsーhe just likes fucking with people/making them madーbut that doesn't mean he's fun to watch.
20: If you could sum up your character with one sentence, what would it be?
when summarizing rosinante in my pinned, i wrote in the phrase "stressed little brother trying his hardest to keep his murderous sibling from plunging off a metaphorical cliff of no return". i think that sums him up pretty well, and goes back to what i was wrote in my answer for #12.
21: Which song do you feel describes your character the most and why?
i'm not too set on what song i think describes rosinante specifically, but the song "letter from death row" by amigo the devil makes me think about rosinante's love for law to the point my eyes violently start watering, so i can leave that here. as for why, i really don't want to explain more than the title already doesーit's an incredibly beautiful little song.
rosinante before meeting law was more-or-less pretty indifferent to kids, i imagine?
he cared about their wellbeing in the same way he cared about the wellbeing of everyone else as any genuinely kind person would, but he never saw his personality (introverted, aversion to loud noises, easily overtimulated, clumsy, etc.) as being something that could qualify him as 'great with kids' so he tended to avoid them.
law, though? oh man. law singlehandedly rewired his brain chemistry.
he loves kids now. even if they don't 'love' him, his experience with law showed him that some kiddos just need a little extra time and he's willing to wait for as long as it takes until they feel comfortable enough to open up & be themselves.
he wants to be the person that is there for them where there's no one else left. as long as they need someone, he'll be there.
META + smoking
oh, man. i actually do have a lot of thoughts about this.
for starters, him picking up smoking was not so much a conscious decision, but because one of his very few friends would smoke. either smoker, hina, or bellemere; but i like to go with bellemere since they not only have a ship together, but it happens to be the only non-problematic ship of rosinante's that is at least semi-popular (his other two popular ships being, uh... incest, & a relationship with a boy he's known since they boy was 10 & he was 23). so i'll take any opportunity to flesh out a healthier one.
i mentioned a bit yesterday that, prior to meeting law, rosinante was very much an isolated, directionless person with no real goals in life. not necessarily unhappy, but he just didn't see himself as having enough of a future to care about 'finding himself', so he let the people in his life do it for him.
he was adopted by a marine? guess he'll join the marines now.
his brother is a criminal? guess he'll volunteer to catch him now.
doflamingo assumes him to be mute? guess he'll pretend to be mute now.
he very much 'mirrored' people in the sense that he would follow along with what they did, valued what they valued, and even dressed how they dressed. he grew up isolated just by virtue of having to hide his true surname/a big part of who he is as a person just so he wasn't murdered in his sleep, so he just latched onto things people did. he wanted to be included. he wanted to make them happy. he wanted connection.
honestly, rosinante infiltrating doflamingo's crew was ironically the best thing that could have happened to him because, for the first time in his life, it forced him to create a persona for himself and be conscious of the choices he was making. also, just being in the presence of his brother again seemed to 'wake' him up and realize he couldn't just be passive anymore. stopping his brother, honestly, became his first real 'goal' in life that he choose for himself, the same way helping law survive became his first real 'purpose'.
(he also may or may not have kept up the smoking habit because someone told him it made him look cool and he would do anything to distract from the fact he's just a clumsy, lame loser inside but that's more of a side note).
-
in verses where he lives, he no longer smokesーeither because of encouragement from law (he'll do anything to make that little shit happy, after all) or because of a collapsed lung during his recovery made him quit the habit cold turkey.
META + Baby 5
i'm sure he was horrified when he first saw her. not because she was a child, just... why is there a child here? an 8 year old child, at that.
he probably wanted to drop everything, scoop her up, and take her to the nearest orphanage right then & thereーbut couldn't do so without blowing his cover. so, he enacted a plan that he wasn't really that happy about: be as off-putting & nasty to her and the kids as he could in hopes they just gave up and ran away. ran away like he did.
she wasn't like him at all, though. she was resilient; he suspected part of that had to do with her (uncomfortably) strong desire to please people (and a fear of abandonment that he would not learn about until much later), but also because doflamingo had gifted her an incredibly strong devil fruit, the arms-arms fruit.
that made him a bit conflicted; for one, no child should have access to a power that destructiveーpeople could get hurt! they could get hurt! but there was also probably a... relief? there relief in knowing she'd have a way of defending herself if she needed to. like 'good, goodーkick their ass! don't let anyone walk all over you!'
(in that same sense, i feel like rosinante was also weirdly relieved that law didn't take his abuse lying down either; he'd mouth off at him, threaten him, try to fight him, and then we he actually stabbed himーhe was weirdly proud? he almost died, but hey, at least he knows this kiddo can hold his own in a pretty violent world.)
-
i feel like in a verse where he lives, he would try & seek her out. especially after taking care of law really awakened his desire to care for the neglected, angry & abused, he'd want to know she was doing all right and open up his home to her (and her husband?) if she ever wanted a place to stay.
META + romance?
a concept that, like most forms of love, pre-law, was kind of alien to him.
for starters, when i mentioned [here] that rosinante didn't view himself as having much of a futureーi don't mean that in a nihilistic way, i mean that in that sense he expected to die very young. he didn't know the how, the why, or the whenーbut he knew doflamingo was going to either kill him one day, or lead to him getting killed.
any sort of 'romantic' relationship he had during this period would have been something more akin to friends with benefits. the benefit of companionship, the benefit of sex or intimacy, it didn't matterーhe never pushed too hard because, whatever the relationship led to, he expected it be cut short anyway. there probably were strong feelings there, but he wouldn't allow himself to celebrate them.
there was no point in getting attached. there was no point in expecting long-term relationships with people who weren't in his immediate vicinity already, like his adopted father and co-workers. he'll be dead soon.
meeting law turned his whole view of the world upside down in more ways than one; he saw a lot of his brother's rage in him, but also... there was that same resignation he had. the same expectation that he was going to die, so what was the point of looking towards a future? it made him angry, and he didn't understand well into his six month journey with him why it made him so angry.
'stop, talking like that. you're going to live through this but, even if you don't, shouldn't you want to make the most of the time you have? live.'
it woke him up in a way he didn't expect and he allowed himself to start fully feeling love for the people & things around him. he loved his brother so much he was going to try to stop him, even if it killed him. he loved law so much he'd do anything to cure him, even if he went broke, was disowned from the marines, and never got to speak to sengoku again.
-
but, in verses where he survives minion island, i feel like that is where he would truly shine and be able to call himself a 'romantic' or 'loving' person when he got a partner. the worst possible thing that could have happened to him happened, and... he was fine? a little fucked up, both physically and psychologically, but hey he lived. it made him realize he didn't want to have regrets when he did eventually die. he wanted to enjoy himself fully while he was still here.
i think, past that point, it would be very easy for him to fall in love, and even admit it aloud. life is too short not to love.
META + Celestial Dragons
he has neer once held a grudge against a single commoner that abused him.
he wouldn't go as far to say he 'deserved' it because he was just a child. a child who was too tender-hearted to ever harm a single person even before they left the holyland. but he understoodーbecause the common people didn't deserve what the celestials did to them, either.
he was by far the easiest person for the angry mobs to catchーthe youngest, the clumsiest and, as i've written about before, [constantly injured]. and in between the worst beatings he's ever received, between the forced starvation, waterboardings, and being dragged around by ropesーhe would be told stories. horrible stories.
he was too young to understand the concept of guilt back then, but when these people told him it was his fault, he believed them. he would cry, and apologize, and do as they asked. the ones kind enough to release him after they got to blow off steam for a whileーallowing him to return to the rundown shack his father & brother were living in, bloodied & in agonyーrosinante would never reveal who did it. he wouldn't give a name, or a physical description, he would even start lying and say he fell, he did it!
it wasn't until he was a teenager when he fully understood the politics of the world around him (in combination with those horrific stories the mobs shared with him in his childhood) that he could probably say he genuinely hated them. with the exception of his parents (and, against his better judgement, his brother) he hated all of them. himself included. so, if someone decided to hate him for who his ancestors wereーhe wouldn't blame them.

What do you think Cora would think of Law memorializing him all over his body, ship, crew? Would he find that obsessive or weird?
(apologies for the ramble; i get to your question eventually, i promiseーthis topic is actually really personal to me and makes me a bit upset).
is this a popular take? because I’ve seen it several times now, and i just don’t understand what people are getting at. it genuinely kind of makes me upset because i feel like it’s coming from the perspective of people who have (fortunately) never experienced the unique kind of grief the death brings and are therefore judging how “messy” it can sometimes look.
sure, I suppose it’s “weird” in the sense that holding onto that kind of rage & guilt for literal years is unhealthy for your mental state (especially if that’s the last thing rosinante would have wanted for himーhe wanted to free him from doflamingo, not bind him to him via his rage)—but i’ve read multiple fics before where authors paint it as this… creepy, stalkerish thing? like it's helga's shrine to arnold in 'hey arnold!' or something? it’s not. It’s really not.
(cw: death of a loved one).
when i was 22, a friend i knew since i was 2 (he was 2 years younger than me, so i literally knew him his entire life) passed away falling off a balcony. really traumatizing, really horrific—i genuinely have a fear of standing too close to balcony/banister railings now. i’ve had nightmares about it.
i keep his ‘in memory’ card and the funeral program his mother gave out at the service on a shelf in my closet so I see it every day when i get dressed or hang up laundry. i took several copies to ensure that i never lost them, and plan on putting them into a nicer shadowbox at some point (but have been too afraid to touch them because I don’t want to ‘ruin’ them). i still post birthday messages to his socials every year. i have old choral performances of his saved to my computer. i have a memorial tattoo.
if someone told me my way of remembering him was ‘creepy’ and ‘obsessive’ just because i think about him a lot or hold on to a lot of momentos, i think I genuinely might have a panic attack & burst into tears? this is all i’ve got left. he’s not here anymore; he was cremated so i don’t even have an actual grave i can go visit and have that connection. and i’m just… not allowed to have any of this because people on the outside think the way i express my grief is ‘too much’? i'd straight up just never speak to that person again.
ー.
so, no, i really don't think rosinante would be that off-put by the tattoos, or the jacket, or the jolly roger at all. if anything, he'd be honored that he made such an impression in this kid's life that he wanted to keep his memory alive like that.
he'd recognize they were separated in an extremely traumatizing wayーand adults have a hard time dealing with difficult emotions like grief, much less children & teenagers dealing with it. there was no way law wasn't going to be impacted by that, so he decided to redirect those things into something physical. tattoos. a custom jacket. a jolly roger. a special attack with his devil fruit. he turned that grief into something that guided him, and arguably gave him strength to keep going.
but also, not to mention, he's a doctor.
barring his jacket that literally has rosinante's codename on it, all of the heart motifs can just as easily hold a double meaning for law. he's literally called dr. heart stealer with a special move where he can detach your heart from your body and put it in a little cube. rosinante may have been a big part of the name & motif choices, but law clearly has other things in his life he connects the meaning of 'heart' to. it means a lot to him.
-
so, no, i don't really find law's behavior that odd or 'obsessive' (except for his blind hatred of doflamingoーthat was clearly obsessive) and i doubt rosinante would, either. the grieving process is wholly unique to an individual, and some people just like to attach their grief to physical momentos that they can latch onto when they miss that person, or feel like they're losing focus.
i find it endearing. beautiful, even.
🤔 Since Cora was resurrected in your survived au do you think he lost his devil fruit and or if you could give him a different fruit what would it be?
that's a good question. honestly, i wish oda would explain in slightly more detail exactly how the process of devil fruit reincarnation works.
is it the second your heart stops, or do you have a 'grace period' of a few hours? so many questions about the "when" part.
for convenience's sake, i write him as still having the calm calm fruit just because that element of his character is fun to have around for future use. but also because, in a scenario where a devil fruit user dies and is resuscitated within, let's say, the next twelve hours (perhaps even several times, because repeated cardiac arrests is definitely a concern with injuries that severe) i feel like it's realistic to think he would still have it.
it is essentially a deal with the devil, so i feel like it wouldn't be something you could "get out of" easily if you one day decided you wanted the ability to swim again and flatlined yourself for a little bit. if you want to get vaguely religious about it: just like your spirit can start to leave your body when you die, but get pulled right back in if you happen to be resuscitated, i feel like the 'spirit' of the devil fruit could function the same.

hmm.... honestlyーif i had to give him another one, i would probably stick with another fruit with good stealth capabilities, like the clear clear fruit. the only thing more terrifying than not being able to hear someone coming is not being able to see them coming.
plus, most importantly, i trust him to use it responsibly! rosinante is a good man with morals, he would never use it for gross peeping shenanigans. sneak up behind law and give him a big 'ol bear hug, maybe, but that's a responsible kind of mischief! dad mischief!
Can't find the art atm BUT it was this really sweet au where Rosi survived and joined the heart pirates. Do you have any thoughts on how he'd interact with the crew, his place on the ship or actions/feelings during Wano and Egghead?
one thing i know for a fact immediately without even having to think about it is that he would adore bepo. sweet little guy? a bit anxious? a hugger? oh, he'd fold faster than law.
he even likes plums! in the light novel about law, he offers some to law (who proceeds to throw an actual fit about how much he hates them, but that's besides the point). rosinante will eat plums with you any day, bepo.
also, because rosinante's last wish before his 'death' was quite literally to give law his life & his freedom back, i know he'd feel indebted to all of the hearts just for being there for him (not just assisting him in battle, but just being there for him as friends & helping him achieve goals) but especially the founding members like bepo, shachi & penguin.
especially them because, going back to the light novel, they're the first people he meets after his escape, and the the first people law decides to put rosinante's 'will' of support & kindness for the people who need it most into practice. he becomes the person that shows them that there are good people in the world, just like rosinante was for law.
he'd make a real effort to ensure he knew all their names, their roles, basic facts about them allーif they're law's friends, then he wants to know everything.

the way i imagine it, post-minion rosinante has no interest in being in a combat situation if he can avoid it.
he'll protect people if he has to; he still the muscle memory of melee training ingrained in him from all those years in the marines, after retiring he makes a living partially from hunting so he's still a fantastic shot, he keeps himself fit because hauling farm equipment all day does that to youーbut it's different now. he's older (not to say thirty nine is old but, with his chronic pain, he may as well be forty nine) and he just wants some peace & quiet.
law's also been a pirate for sixteen years by the point they'd reunite in dressrosa, so rosinante knows he can handle himself whether he's there or not. he might come with him to wano, but it's also just as likely for him to pack all the hearts a nice little bento box with extra snacks and go "have fun overturning a tyrannical government, you crazy kids."
uh... if he doesn't go with him, though, winner island definitely makes him regret that decision.
