Work in Progress

I got back into making art / digital collages in GIMP a few weeks ago, after years of not touching the program and wanted to make a place to post my creations.

"Who's Lila? -Wheeliam" aesthetic/moodboard

[sources: x / x / x / x / x ]

Aesthethic/Moodboard made with GIMP using stock images from pexels.com for the character "Wheeliam" of the videogame "Who's Lila?" by Garage Heathen. Both the game and this piece of art make use of 'dithering'.

Additional thoughts beneath the cut:

I feel so sorry for Wheeliam and I also love the imagery and scenery of when the players gets to meet and interact with him, so I decided to make a moodboard for him. Again, part of challenging myself to do so only with stockpics. I quite like it.

Also, random sidenote, but there weren't a lot of sycamore stock pics on pexels; I had kinda hoped for showing a whole tree but alas, I think this still gets the point across. Bonus fun fact, 'sycamore' has apparently been applied to different types of trees (source: wikipedia). Huh.

"Who's Lila?"

Aesthethic/Moodboard made with GIMP using stock images from pexels.com for the videogame "Who's Lila?" by Garage Heathen. Both the game and this piece of art use 'dithering' as an art style.

Thoughts beneath the cut:

My first aesthetic/moodboard! I challenged myself to make some art for media I liked using only stock images as well as trying to recreate the style used, and Who's Lila became an easy choice once I discovered the dithering option in GIMP.

I enjoyed trying out different color options, choosing and arranging the different pictures. Maybe in the future I will try out some of the different color palettes this game has to offer, for now, I decided to stick with the 'standard' one.

Making this gave me the inspiration and confidence to try out making different aesthetics for other art pieces/media as well, so that is an additional plus. I also made some more Who's Lila pieces as well.

"Almost Familiar" (Annihilation)

Digital collage made in GIMP with stock images from Pexels.com. Based on a scene in the book "Annihilation", part of the "Southern Reach" triology-soon-to-be-tetralogy by Jeff Vandermeer.

I was kinda thrilled that making collages enabled me to re-create this specific scene from the book, even if this piece looks and feels just as eerie to me as reading the scene did. This was more of a quick one, but I still like it very much.

I have made a few other collages that dip into the same uncanny metamorphosis-type entities and imagery as this one that I will hopefully post soon as well.

"You Do Not Belong Here"

Two digital color alterations made in GIMP of screenshots from "The Oldest View" by Kane Pixels on Youtube, which includes the Julien Reverchon Giant artpiece made by Kevin Obregon.

Additional thoughts below the cut:

Similar in style to the movie poster mockup I did, these ones actually came first and were the practice works for the final poster(s). I have a collage variation of these two in particular that I might eventually post as well.

They work well to emulate a style that the video series itself uses, that is, showing monochromatic humans in a green-ish, natural (forest) environment. So I simply used a similar concept for both Wyatt and the Giant, but added a contour around them to further make them stand out.

I really enjoyed making these, they were among the first things I made when I got back into GIMP.

"Who's Lila?" (movie poster mockup)

Digital collage for the videogame 'Who's Lila?' by Garage Heathen (available on steam) made with stock images from pexels.com.

Additional thoughts/info below the cut:

When I found out that there is an actual dithering tool/option in GIMP, I immediately remembered a little videogame called "Who's Lila?" and decided to try and make a mockup poster for it. It was really cool to see that I could (sort of) emulate the ditherpunk look of the game.

I like that the dithering effect makes it difficult to make out (at first) where the two pictures used overlap and which part belongs to which picture.

I have made a few other pieces in this style that I will hopefully post soon.

"Ivan", alt title "The Beholder"

Digital collage made in GIMP with stock photos from pexels.com. Inspired by the character of Ivan Beck from Kane Pixels' The Backrooms series (on youtube) and the OST/its cover art for the series (also on youtube). The eye sketch was done by me.

Some additional thoughts below the cut:

I am so happy with how this piece turned out, in part because I did not expect it would look so close to how imagined it. The look of the colors and the overlays give me a lot of joy.

I wanted to recreate the 'feel' of the more abstract Backrooms videos (Overflow etc.) as well as the cover art for the songs. One major inspiration was an instagram story which can be found in this reddit post. I also wanted to incorporate a couple of themes/motifs that I noticed (green light, eye imagery, sun imagery, the sea, time and space, the eight 'arms' of the prototype etc).

Only time will tell how 'canon accurate' this is, but for the time being, I quite like it.
