I got back into making art / digital collages in GIMP a few weeks ago, after years of not touching the program and wanted to make a place to post my creations.

"You Do Not Belong Here"

Two digital color alterations made in GIMP of screenshots from "The Oldest View" by Kane Pixels on Youtube, which includes the Julien Reverchon Giant artpiece made by Kevin Obregon.

Additional thoughts below the cut:

Similar in style to the movie poster mockup I did, these ones actually came first and were the practice works for the final poster(s). I have a collage variation of these two in particular that I might eventually post as well.

They work well to emulate a style that the video series itself uses, that is, showing monochromatic humans in a green-ish, natural (forest) environment. So I simply used a similar concept for both Wyatt and the Giant, but added a contour around them to further make them stand out.

I really enjoyed making these, they were among the first things I made when I got back into GIMP.

"Annihilation" - aesthetic/moodboard (based on a mix of movie and book version)

An aesthetic/moodboard made in GIMP based on the Southern Reach books and movie by Jeff Vandermeer. Made with free stock images from pexels.com.

Further thoughts below the cut:

One of the earliest aesthetics/moodboards I made when I got back into GIMP, and before I even really got back into 'Annihilation' again, going purely off of memory to make this one. Not the best I have made imo, but still part of my art journey, so I am posting it.

Also, I kinda like simplicity, how 'ordinary' everything looks, while the book and movie themselves contain weird and uncanny imagery.

Either way, I liked making this, which is the most important thing. And it sparked my attempts to make creature collages later on, like the dolphin with the human eye.

"The Hanged Man (Ending)"

"The Hanged Man (Ending)"

Two variations of a digital collage made in GIMP with a picture from pexels.com and a tarot art motive from wikimedia commons (public domain), representing the Hanged Man ending from the videogame "Who's Lila?" by Garage Heathen. I used the dithering option in GIMP to get the ditherpunk effect.

Further thoughts below the cut:

This one really felt like being hit over the head with inspiration; I saw the picture of what is the background in this piece and was immediately like "Hanged Man Ending!" and then found the Hanged Man tarot art and they just - fit. So well.

It took a couple tries and iterations to get it exactly how I wanted it to be, but I am really happy about how this piece turned out.

Fun fact, I tried to use the 'Tomiho' color palette for the first version of the pic. As a treat for the fans of the game.

"Jurassic Park - Dr Ellie Settler" + Peach Color (Aesthetic/Moodboard)

"Jurassic Park - Dr Ellie Settler" + Peach Color (Aesthetic/Moodboard)

[sources: x / x / x / x / x ]

An aesthetic/moodboard made in GIMP for the character of Dr Ellie Settler in "Jurassic Park" (1993, directed by Steven Spielberg), made with stock images from pexels.com. The color theme I chose is soft peach.

I originally planned to use a VHS-like effect over this aesthetic (and maybe I will post that version in the future), but I actually find that I like this version a lot better. It is very calming, in the way I feel the character is.

I mixed in several points of her character in this, sadly I couldn't find more paleobotanist related pics when I originally made this - I made it earlier than some of the pieces I have already posted. But I still really like how it came out, it mixes several things that important parts of her life.

(Also, sidenote, I might change the layout of my posts a bit, first giving the title and then adding the sources, I think it might look a bit nicer, so I am trying it out to see if I like this layout better.)

"Who's The Giant?" (The Oldest View/Who's Lila Crossover Mockup)

"Who's The Giant?" (The Oldest View/Who's Lila Crossover Mockup)

[sources: x / x / x ]

Digital Collage made in GIMP with screenshots from The Oldest View by Kane Pixels and a photo of the Julien Reverchon Giant made by Kevin Obregon, in the dithering color palette and style (and using some dialogue from) the videogame "Who's Lila?" by Garage Heathen. A crossover fanart of both pieces of media, if you will. The font is Dogica Pixel.

Additional thoughts below the cut:

This happens when I make fanart for multiple pieces of media and a) I start thinking about using the artstyle of one for the other and b) there are actually some similarities that are fun to explore. Hence, this piece.

I like how both pieces of media include themes of remembering/forgetting, and about attention, though in different ways.

Fun fact I learned - first crop the image, then use the dither filter on the final piece, not the other way around. I actually have a version of this piece in a larger size, but the crop made it look pretty bad, so I uploaded a specifically-made smaller one to avoid that issue.

(Also because I am not sure how well it shows up, the little rectangle in the lower right corner is Wyatt's phone.)

(Additionally. Fun fact - I originally planned to have Wyatt be the right-side portrait but I sadly haven't been able to make that happen with the footage from the webseries.)

(3rd addition: Who’s Lila features a Daemon and apparently, Arby from the tv-series 'Utopia' as a model for an FBI agent. Stuff that Kane Pixels has also expressed interest in (Daemon by Daniel Suarez, the tv show Utopia).)

"Who's Lila?"

Aesthethic/Moodboard made with GIMP using stock images from pexels.com for the videogame "Who's Lila?" by Garage Heathen. Both the game and this piece of art use 'dithering' as an art style.

Thoughts beneath the cut:

My first aesthetic/moodboard! I challenged myself to make some art for media I liked using only stock images as well as trying to recreate the style used, and Who's Lila became an easy choice once I discovered the dithering option in GIMP.

I enjoyed trying out different color options, choosing and arranging the different pictures. Maybe in the future I will try out some of the different color palettes this game has to offer, for now, I decided to stick with the 'standard' one.

Making this gave me the inspiration and confidence to try out making different aesthetics for other art pieces/media as well, so that is an additional plus. I also made some more Who's Lila pieces as well.
