A sudden thought: what if it was Aunt May that had died instead of Uncle Ben?

At the point of Uncle Ben’s death, Peter was drawing away from his aunt and uncle, and particularly from his uncle, who he felt was unfairly restricting him and couldn’t understand his problems.

After his death, the whole “with great power comes great responsibility” takes on greater meaning, and Peter straightens out and starts using his powers as Spider-Man more responsibly.

If Aunt May had died instead that night, would there have been a reconciliation? There might have been a sense of mutual blame and continued tension between them, made worse by both of them avoiding the other and struggling with their grief alone.

It may have gone another way, with the both of them bonding and becoming closer with May’s death, but I’m curious as to what would happen if they didn’t.

Peter and May’s relationship stabilised each other in the months after Ben’s death, but would the same happen if Ben died instead?

Would Peter continue his rebelliousness? Or fall down a darker path? How would this affect the fledgling image of the Spider-Man? In this AU, would it be possible for Peter to become a more bitter version of his vigilante self, with a death of the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man?

It would be interesting to see a version of himself like that, struggling on all sides to find the right path without support from his family, and maybe even falling into villainy because of a wrong choice.
