THIS. THIS THIS THIS.

I really love how clumsy Eric (2024) is. Like he’s awkward, and shy, and constantly shrinks in on himself.

Shelly asks him for his name and he makes things SO awkward by not responding because there’s no way she’s talking to him, right? despite him being the only person there.

When he goes to hunt down the people that killed them, it’s so MESSY and CHAOTIC because he has no idea what he’s doing. The car scene is amusing as hell because he’s flailing between the seats and ultimately gets his ass kicked without taking a single life. Major fail.

Like, Eric is not a fighter. He’s a non-confrontational introvert through and through. Which makes his transition into The Crow all the more impactful because it’s the exact opposite of who he is or ever wanted to be.

moby dick summarized without going into any of its loftier themes:

act one: adventure story ft. unexpected queer romance between a quiet teacher and a tattooed butch cannibal via the "only one bed" trope. one quoted sentence to summarize: "better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken christian."

act two: national geographic textbook on the history and biology of whales and all associated subjects, incoherent rambling, in-depth studies of background characters we never see before or after, procrastinating the ending. one quoted sentence to summarize: "nor have i been at all sparing of historical whale research, when it has seemed needed."

act three: greek tragedy ft. queerplatonic romance between a doomed madman and his voice of reason henchman who literally offers to ride off into the sunset with him but who he ultimately betrays for a whale. one quoted sentence to summarize: "here’s food for thought, had ahab time to think; but ahab never thinks; he only feels, feels, feels; that’s tingling enough for mortal man! to think’s audacity."

I’m watching ASiP right now, and something (finally) hit me. After Mike and John meet up in the park and they start talking about John staying in London but not being able to afford it on his pension, Mike tells him, “Ah, that’s not the John Watson I know.” John says, “Yeah, well I’m not the John Watson–” with the retort quickly dying on his tongue as he flexes the fingers of his left hand.

I can only think he meant to say one of two things: “Well I’m not the John Watson anyone knows,” including himself, or, “Well I’m not the John Watson I know.”

His distress and depression at being shot then invalided out of his Life’s Work and the feeling that he has no meaningful place in society (being back and staying in London, as Mike says John couldn’t bear to be anywhere else) is still so palpable and real for him.

So it’s all the more wonderful, isn’t it, that Sherlock whirls into his life soon after and very bluntly states “I know you’re an army doctor-” upon meeting him. And he says it again the following day. “You’re a doctor. In fact, you’re an army doctor.” Present tense, not past. “You are.” He’s not looking at John like John looks at himself: as a has-been, a nobody. He sees John as very capable, skilled, strong, worthy.

But then there’s the way John immediately stands up, clears his throat, and faces Sherlock back-straight and head-on, and answers his “Any Good?” with “Yes. Very good.” Oh man. OH MAN. This is when John finally realizes he may still have a meaningful place in the world after all. That he’s not washed up just because he’s been invalided.

I’d put all my money on this moment as the beginning of the rest of John Watson’s life.
