part of what I love about both mdzs and tgcf is that you can actually see how the protagonists and love interests fall in love with each other and that they like spending time together and have traits that are attractive to each other so it makes total sense when they Realize their feelings and have plots around their relationship
a big beef I have with other books and movies etc is when the romance drives the storyline and it's very Dramatique like "oh my god I have to save my lady love why is the universe keeping us apart" when textually it's like...do you guys even hang out? what specific things do you like about each other? like yeah ok you're In Love but do you *like* each other?
but with both wangxian and hualian there are so many little moments where you can see like oh they like each other because they share values that often go unrewarded in their society, or they share a sense of humor, or they see through each others facades, or they have some "opposites attract" traits, or one of them defends the other when no one else does, etc
and it just feels more real and the stakes of them being apart are more devastating when you actually see what being together means to them and why having that taken away would hurt

oh very much no. i still abide by the values i was raised on (love your neighbor, treat everyone with respect, be kind and gracious always) but i do not care abt religion lol. it’s embedded in my history and will always be a part of my art but mainly just cause i love horror and drama and what’s more horrifying and dramatic than devoting your life to god.
Y'know, some people do have a strong crying response to stress, and they might cry (even against their own will) when faced with an upsetting situation and that doesnt mean they are "gaslighting" or "manipulating" you.
There are people who use crying as a manipulation tactic? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean that every person that cries during a heated argument is trying to get under your skin. They have their own emotions and issues, and frankly, not everything other people do is a personal attack on you.

sure, these things could be seen as crossing a line of weirdness to some but like. i’m happy, i’m kind to others, i love my friends, i love having fun, and i love harmlessly being me in every single way.
i think i am ten times happier than those who criticize me and think i’m a bad person for these things. i don’t hate them, my block button is not one to represent hate, i simply have to protect myself and continue living happily. i hold no hate in my heart for any past bad things that have happened, i am simply a dog moving forward.

Okay, still not done thinking about why I like Vio/Shadow.
Canonically, they are a tragedy. And I don't just mean that in the "it's sad" sense, I mean that they are Doomed from the beginning to the roles of Hero and Villain. That's the tragedy of it: they get along, they're compatible, when left to their own devices they like each other. But their circumstances force them into those story roles anyway.
It's just a scenario that's so inviting to explore. What happens if these two met under different circumstances? What happens if something changes in the middle of the story to send it askew? What could happen after the fact, if they were ever able to meet again?
What if their assigned Story Roles were different?
How do the characters feel about the Story Roles they've been placed in?
How do the characters' perceptions of each other change when they stop seeing the Story Role and start seeing the person underneath?
How do you move on from having been a Story Role, once the story is over? How do you grow and change and deal with being a real, complete person?
These sorts of questions definitely aren't unique to Four Swords, or to Vio and Shadow, but I think Four Swords lends itself especially well to them because of the way the characters are initially presented as such two-dimensional archetypes, but are also clearly much more than that. And with Vio and Shadow in particular because of what their story roles cost them, and the way they both challenged those roles in-text.
