Disclaimer: I have yet to play the original Zelda on NES. That might inform this take somewhat.
IT’S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE! TAKE THIS.
I was always confused by this because I knew that the old man gave Link a sword, not a companion. At the end of this interaction, Link is still alone. I always thought it was kind of stupid for that reason. Some help you are, old man! I’m still alone!
Maybe I just have Breath of the Wild on the brain. But the old man was never trying to stop Link from going alone. He was saying: “You’re going to be alone, and that will be scary. But you can use this to fight.”
TL;DR - the old man doesn’t solve the problem. But he does suggest that the problem can be solved.
Every time I go to buy ancient arrows in The Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. There is always a thunderstorm, and honestly, I feel like the game is just messing with me at this point. 🌩⚡️⛈️⚡️🏹

I HAVE played totk by now and I'm sure I'll eventually make a ref for link in that game too, even if it won't be very different.
Is this Canon? No. Do i care? No!!! I'm just being silly and having fun
I have many silly headcanons that are just absolutely not true at all but they are fun so I might share those idk
