Tales from fiction writing class
Create a scene using details and imagery to convey a feeling without stating it directly, use like dialog.
"I'm just trying to help you. You âre going to go to Hell."
My throat dried out. It felt like those mornings after I had smoked a couple of Menthols 100s the night before while drunk at some bar. My nose was starting to burn as well, like when you're underwater and you breathe in. Caleb seemed to notice my discomfort after a moment.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. Just ... I'm sorry."
The lights in the restaurant seemed too bright all of a sudden. The other customers all seemed to be too happy to be real people. Even the glass of water next to me looks too pretty to drink. It's probably from the tap, filled with iron and rust particles. Drinking anything in this place sounded awful.Â
Silence set in then. My eyes wandered over to the tables that surrounded us. There was a man in a suit with a bolo tie that didnât like his salad but still eating it. A ceiling fixture on the opposite wall had an overlooked cobweb on it. A woman sitting a bit away wore a pretty summer dress with a pair of black and white Adidas sneakers, looking cute and quirky.
I heard Caleb start to talk again, but I continued to stare at her shoes." I think once you start going to worship with my family you'll really like it. The people there are so welcoming and nice. You know it kinda hurts my feelings that you won't even try to come just once." I wish I was cute and quirky.
The woman noticed me staring at her then and gave me a rude look. I slowly turned my body forward in the chair as my stomach contoured into a painful ball. Caleb was looking away now, but he felt my eyes on him. He took a deep breath and put on a forced smile before looking at me again.
âI got you something." He pulled a red jewelry box out of his pants pocket and slide it over to my side of the table. "Happy six months." The piano music was now very melancholy yet it hadn't changed keys. His hands started shaking a bit. He wanted me to explode into a smile and kiss him passionately, then heâd feel better.
"Uh⌠here." He reaches over and opens the box. It was a small heart pendant encrusted with three white diamonds. The one thatâs super popular with many women right now. The one that his sister had flaunted at me two months ago over dinner and I had pretended to love out of politeness.
I should rub my eyes, but then I'll smear my makeup and it'll get in my contacts and it'll look like I'm crying and I'm not crying.
"Please say something."
âI don't feel well,â a hoarse voice says.
He has a look on his face. One I can't name, but I know it well. The one some old classmates I don't talk to anymore had. The one a street preacher had when he yelled at me for wearing a skirt. It seems a lot of people have this look. An old roommate had it. The cashier at Walmart. My mom.Â
âYouâll feel better after you eat.â
tomorrow will be wild, first lessons this school year, whish me luck
About to head into my first year in the IB program. Any advice?
Hi thanks for your question ~
I actually wrote an in-depth piece about this other day on the IB Reddit thread:
Prioritize your workload.
It is far more important to spend more time working on any internal/external assessments than in-class ones (i.e. quizzes). Iâm not saying that you should ignore any in-class ones but if you have an external assessment submission due the following day but also an in-class one, perhaps consider spending more resources on that external assessment that night.
Keep track of grade breakdowns (i.e. the ratio for final marks).
If your final exam is worth 80% and your internal assessments 20%, donât waste time stressing over an unsatisfactory in-class assessment mark (in the end, this has little or no effect over final marks). Do however, review the material that you didnât perform well in and keep a note of it for future reference.
Process internal and external assessments months ahead of time.
For instance, one of the most difficult tasks for the Extended Essay is coming up with a doable topic. Work through your interests and possible choices months in advance (I started actively working through mine the summer before Year 1) to avoid rushing and becoming overwhelmed when working under a time schedule.
In addition to the above, here are the essentials for succeeding in IB (must-sees are in bold):

Hope this helps ~
ways to study for exams that are actually productive
use actual note cards for vocab. yes, apps like quizlet are dandy when youâre on the go, but actually physically writing out each note card helps put the information into memory faster than typing them.
visual learner? make charts and diagrams. they donât have to be pretty. the lines donât have to be perfectly straight. it doesnât have to be photogenic. but if it helps you learn, do it.
after you take notes (in class or at home/from your text book), write down possible quiz questions about the material on the next page while itâs still fresh in your mind. later on when youâre studying for the test, use these questions to gauge what specifics out of that chapter you need to work on the most.
start sooner rather than later. i know, youâve heard this a million times from every teacher ever. but itâs legit. especially as you get into harder level classes and college courses because there is literally so much material that the tests cover that you simply can not accurately learn all of it over night. instead, start about 10 days in advance (but of coarse, the sooner the better).
studying doesnât have to be a big giant study session that takes hours. if you start far enough in advance, study sessions can be around an hour, hell even 45 minutes is a good. if you go too long in one study session your brain will be fried and studying will be pointless because your brain wonât be processing any of it. thatâs why itâs important to take breaks and not just cram for 5 hours the night before an exam.
actually study. hold yourself accountable and make your education a priority. if you have homework and studying to do, make it a priority over going partying or watching tv. there will be another party. you can dvr your show. you canât take your test on a later day because you donât feel ready. so be ready.
be careful with study groups. if you have a study group with all of your best friends, lets face it, youâre going to end up spending more time talking about harry styles and supernatural than actually studying. itâs better to have a study group with people who are your friends, but not best friends. and itâs better to keep it between 5-7 people so that everyone can be involved.
if the material is just super confusing and you canât seem to understand it no matter how hard you study, itâs not you. itâs the way you were taught it. each teacher teaches a bit differently, and maybe their style of teaching just isnât for you. if this happens, find a way that explains it the best for you. for example, if chemistry is just super confusing for you, try watching the Crash Course chemistry videos on youtube or have a friend explain it to you. this will give you a completely different perspective on the material and will help you understand it better.
at the end of the day, remember that everything will be okay. studying can be stressful, especially if itâs in a class that you struggle in. but i promise you that you are not the only one who struggles sometimes in school, itâs a part of being human. as long as you actually put in an effort and try your best, be proud of yourself. take a deep breath. and remember: you got this.

I love my English teacher. Instead of focusing on two words in a poem for 5 weeks, he teaches us important skills we can use in our everyday life, like making inferences about a person's life by stalking their Facebook!
Today I chased the anti-therians at school when we went outside
I have no regrets
I refuse to ever do my homework again. What are they gonna do? Give me a detention? Wow an extra hour at school to draw stuff on my hand. So scary. The only thing I'll worry about is when I run out of art prompts and challenges. Idgaf bro I'm not a rebel or anything I'm just done letting myself be controlled by an out of date learning system.
Yeah, you might be old, but are you THIS old?
