This is one of the best harry potter fics I have read so far! Awesome work, dude!

(Sometimes you write the things you wish to read lol. ie you just want to write a ficlet where Snape punches a bully because you can't draw)

Today's prompt is:

James Hated Being This High

James Potter was many things. Popular, rich, handsome. The favourite subject of conversation at school and the leader of a group of friends that had earned their favour into even the school faculty.

James Potter was also saw what he wanted to see, heard what he wanted to hear and did what he wanted to do.

So when he met Snape, who was everything he wasn't and had the one thing he really wanted, James Potter was a bully.

A bully to everyone who was brave enough to listen to the dirty little Slytherin... There weren't that many.

Except for one day.

The one day that they did listen because they had to. To look because they had to.

Listen, never hear. Look, never see.

The one day the dirty little Slytherin got his well-earned revenge.

It's morning again somewhere in Scotland. The world is alive, Severus feels in his lungs. Alive, cruel with a shift so profound, he collapsed to the ground, a deep scrape on his arm.

There is laughter, after that. Laughter behind the busz in his ears. Feet under him, rattling the ground, inching closer and closer and closer. The world is alive, with Severus not in it.

And then there are no hands. Severus would have preferred hands, on some occasions. Particularly those where he's outnumbered 4 to 1 and he'd rather rely on things he still has control over.

The world is alive, when he's lidted to the air. The world is alive, when they laugh at his face and the world is alive when he's dropped to the ground, Lily a distraction and the world is alarmingly breathing when Severus, without a wand, opponents distracted, lifts his fist.

The world is silent save for the sound of a fist colliding with another's jaw.

It's a sickening sound, to all watching. It's a sickening sight, James Potter sprawled on the muddy ground, cradling a bleeding nose and a jaw already blossoming into dark bruises. It's revenge, his friends moving out of their trance to aid their fallen leader, glaring at Severus.

Severus can't find it in himself to be sorry. He picks up his wand, not bothering wiping it clean of the coat of dirt, and points it right towards his forehead, robes disheveled.

"For the last time, Potter. Leave me alone!" he screams the last part, turning on his hill and ready to get as far away as he can from that tree.

It doesn't take long for James Potter to attack back, nose still bleeding, anger accumulating. Just this once, however, he wasn't fast enough. Smart enough.

James hated being this high. Above the ground, people lifting their heads to catch a glimpse. Some laughing, some snighering and pointing, significantly so at the red of his cheeks. James hated being this high. He would hate it for many days to come, when Snape lifts the charm to drop him. Right on his back, in the mud, where he could be humiliated the most.

"Leave me alone," Severus said one last time, wand stashed it in robes, this time no one bothering to go after him.

It wasn't much, what he had today.

It was revenge, even if for one day.

And Severus didn't bother hiding his smile on the way back to Slytherin.

from a watsonian perspective both snily and jily had dysfunctional and unhealthy elements to their dynamics, but from a doylist perspective snily's flaws were intentionally written into their story as to set it up as a tragedy, thus giving their relationship and subplot real emotional weight. whereas jily's flaws are a result of jkr failing to write a healthy relationship and framing james' lack of respect for her wishes as a quirk. snily is a successful tragedy. jily is a failed love story.

This is also true. Even if you take out the whole death eater/Voldemort war element out of it, Snape and Lily’s story is ultimately much more interesting and stronger to base a lasting relationship off of (they come from different classes, they’re both talented at potions/school, they’re both childhood friends, they’re both studious, they’re both shown to have sharp tongues, they’re both very protective of the people they care for, the element of both of them having to confront their own shortcomings/house/class differences to grow as people and a couple is fascinating, Lily is even shown to be BLUSHING over him, the fact they have some of the most romantic lines in the series, etc) as opposed to James and Lily, where we get NO growth, see no basis of connection besides they’re both gryffindors I guess, and are just expected to accept it. If JK wanted us to buy them as a truly loving couple, she wouldn’t have purposely put in scenes where they’re shown to be antagonistic towards each other right from the start and to where Harry literally thinks “my dad forced her into marrying him”. THAT is not a good thing. That is not how the main character should be viewing his own parents’ relationship as. Even worse is when he confronts Sirius and Lupin about it, they’re only excuse is “well he deflated his head a bit!”, only to add yeah, he lied to her and kept bullying Snape behind her back despite her specifically asking him to stop. Like, really? This is not the basis of romance, that’s the basis of a horribly incompatible relationship and proof James did not grow as a person. They have little in common, their shared scenes are obviously one-sided and entitled, and we know off canon that James couldn’t keep ONE promise to her. How is that okay? At least to make Snily work, Snape AND Lily have to work on both their issues, not one bending to the will of the other.

And no, James trying to fight off Voldemort is not “growth” or being a shining hero, that’s literally bare minimum of being a decent person and parent. You really think Lucius and Narcissa wouldn’t try to fight off someone trying to kill Draco? How about Mrs Zabini for Blaise? The Greengrasses for Daphne and Astoria? How about Arthur and Molly over their kids? The Grangers over Hermione? Hell, let’s say Snape was in James’ place instead, you really think he wouldn’t try everything to keep her and their child safe? Any loving parent would do that, but James is lauded as a beacon of heroism for literally doing something the majority of parents would do anyway.

Also, like, it’s really sad that Lily seemingly has no life or personality outside of James. Her only friends are his friends (despite us seeing she had her own in school? Where did they go? Why don’t they matter?), they only person to talk about her outside of Snapes memories and people mentioning her eyes is SLUGHORN for gods sake. It’s sad Harry gets all this info and treasures from the Potters but NOTHING from the Evans side. Surely there’s nothing they could have left him and she made sure he’d have? Really? Why was her personality taken away to accommodate him? And then of course there’s her letters, where it’s obvious their little picture of domestic bliss is not working. Her life all but revolves around Harry, while we know James is antsy to leave at any moment (and from what we saw, when he did get out it was doing reckless shit). Which yes, is a factor off the fact they were so young and like, probably shouldn’t have a kid, but it’s a red flag that she’s putting in most of the effort while he wants to goof off with his buddies. That’s not a sustainable relationship. That’s a divorce waiting to happen had they survived the war. People can make up all the cute headcanons they want, but the reality is it was far from a fairytale romance.

Like, as I’ve said and you pointed out, they’re a failed romance. They’re not even viable if you look at the elements. Not to say Snape and Lily would be picture perfect, but at least they had a true basis of compatible and would help challenge and make the other grow. You can’t say that for her and James, which ultimately is used to prop him up while degrading her to merely his wife and mother of his child. Snape and Lily have “it’s real for us” and “Always” while James and Lily have her saying hes an arrogant toerag and that she never wants to date him, but somehow they’re the real romance? Give me a break.

In conclusion: Cancel James Shithead Potter

forget saving the wizarding world, naming his firstborn after them, heading the auror office, etc., I would love to see the reunion/conversation in which dead Harry tries to explain to his dad and godfather that he named his other son after snape

This perfectly shows how disgusting and actually scary the marauders were. Both in their early and later lives.

Imagine Severus Snape when he’s running away from the Marauders and hiding in various places

Honestly, Severus should've just stomped on Lames Snotter's face till it wasn't a face anymore.

Him stepping over his body was the loveliest thing he did to this pathetic butt-monkey of a human.

As a non movie fan, my reaction to people going "He stepped on James' body", was "excuse me, are you perchance remembering some fanfic you wrote?", because it's something that not only didn't happen in the books, but also makes no sense timelinewise.

After hearing about it a hundred times, my new reaction is,

Why is James entitled to any respect from the man he bullied for 7 years, at least one of those behind his wife's back? From a man James choked with soap and threatened to take off his underwear?

If my best friend quit being my friend and decided she was in love with one of my former bullies? I might still care about her, because I rarely stop caring about people I once considered a close friend, but I'm not required to care about her husband to upset if she dies.

I don't care how much people have been told that couples are basically a single unit and we have to love both of you to love either. If it even applies normally (gag, I'm not convinced of that), it sure doesn't apply to situations where one of you marries someone who choked people in public.

Unpopular opinion but I cheered when Severus tried to cut James Potter's face in response to being assaulted.

Re-watching the Deathly Hallows and this scene still make me cringe like hell. Why that scene! why? it doesn’t even happen in the book! 

I highly doubt Snape would know where the Potter cottage was. They were in secret hiding to begging with and Snape and Lily weren’t even talking to each other at that point in the story.

So yep, doesn’t happen in the book, first person to reach the house is Hagrid, closely followed by Sirius. 

I could also talk about the fact that he passed over James’s body as if it was no big deal and that a 15 months old INJURED baby cries at the top of his lung right beside him, but nope, let’s hold on to the corpse.

This still drives me crazy to this day. Love and obsession are two different things. I will never support or love Snape because it’s not as if he’s an inherently good person. I don’t hate him either. My hatred is reserved for characters like Umbridge, Bellatrix, and Voldemort.

I don’t like Snape apologists as they refuse to see beyond his obsessive love for Lily and call him a hero. He’s not really. He even admitted that he asked Voldemort to save only Lily, not caring she had a family. When he stole the last bit of the letter, he was trying to hold onto something that wasn’t his. He ripped a photo displaying a happy family because he wanted her happiness for himself.

He gave as good as he got to James and his friends, and clearly he was plotting ways to knock James down. He was hardly innocent in their altercations, and even as an adult he continued to goad Sirius by lording his status as an essential operative over his head.

By his fifth year of school, he was hanging out with all the other little junior death eaters. He called whatever dark magic Avery did to Mary MacDonald a prank. He created torture spells if you recall in his sixth year potions book, which he just left lying in a cupboard.

While he despises the word Mudblood as an adult, it’s only because it cost him the friendship of Lily. He called other people of Muggle birth the same name prior to that incident, and in our anger we rarely say things we don’t mean. Deep down some part of him clearly thought of Lily as a Mudblood. It shouldn’t matter if he was embarrassed or not by what happened. He took out his anger on her because she was an easy target. He showed his true colours.

He’s shown to be obsessive when he told Lily he wouldn’t allow her to be with James as if she weren’t her own person. Snape also told Voldemort the prophecy and only cared afterwards when Voldemort targeted Lily. He didn’t care that he was sentencing a family to their death. He had probably already killed people for the Dark Lord.

Then he spent 17 years bullying children who weren’t in his house and specifically targeted Harry because he couldn’t get over the past. He refused to view Harry as anything other than James son even though he was his own person. Harry was actually eager to learn everything about the wizarding world, and one of the reasons he did so poorly was because he had a teacher unwilling to treat him fairly. He clearly could make potions as evidenced by his OWL results.

One of his student’s greatest fear was him if that’s not concerning then there’s something wrong. He made a student feel poorly about herself because she knew the answer. He blamed Harry after his classmate screwed up his own potion and accused him of wanting all the glory for himself. Apologists would say it was for his cover, but Snape could’ve just remained indifferent. He went out of his way to be nasty.

Even JK Rowling has said she doesn’t understand why fans love Snape so much.

Harry didn’t give his son Severus as a middle name because he liked Snape. He did it because he respected what the man had done. He would never forget how he treated him and his friends over the years. Also I think he wanted to be a better man than Snape, his father, and godfather by letting the past go rather than holding onto hatred and anger.

So James can tell Harry how to call his professor names and prank him and stuff after nearly 15 years but Snape needs to get over it and grow up.

Fact: Using the Levicorpus jinx, James assaulted Severus Snape by it’s purpose of suspending him by his ankles.

Fact: Severus was the one who created the jinx, meaning that he created a jinx that could be used for physical (and possible sexual) assault.

Actually it was james potter who wrote the HBP book. James dad was a famous potion master so james had knowledge about potions since he was a kid. Snivellus stole it. And used it for himself. Itf i was his Harry and Hermoine would've Immediately know if it was Snape's.

And Harry probably didn’t Connect the dots or maybe he just didn’t pay attention well enough to the handwriting. Just like in first year when he thought that Severus Snape wanted to live and was after the stone. And was the root of all evil, He found out the truth at the end.
