Old, worn quilt.

You look like an old, worn quilt.

Clutched and clung to, a beacon of hope,

dragged and fingered, been through everything

cool nights

barely visible stars

you’re ripping at the seams, stuffing almost out

patched up, over and over

odd patterns, different thread

old.

worn.

quilt.

The Artwork I Made For My Moms Birthday Card This Year.

I grew up with a grandma who quilted, but she’d never been interested in passing along the hobby, so when she finally kicked it I was the grandkid who got all her materials, ‘cause I was the only one who knew how to use a sewing machine. Then, in 2015, a friend had a baby and I figured I’d make her a quilt, ‘cause how hard could it be?

oh

I Grew Up With A Grandma Who Quilted, But Shed Never Been Interested In Passing Along The Hobby, So When

Luckily I am the stubbornest human alive, ‘cause I never woulda finished otherwise. I didn’t know what I was doing, didn’t know the terms to look up how to do anything, I musta reinvented the wheel like eight times and it took ten months, BUT I DID IT.

I Grew Up With A Grandma Who Quilted, But Shed Never Been Interested In Passing Along The Hobby, So When

Figured I’d suffered enough and would never do it again and now I’m on quilt #9 smdh

————————–

I’m hyperventilating.

Holy shit. Holy SHIT.

This is INCREDIBLE.

Oh my god.

I’ve gotta go lay down holy shit look at this how do we just walk by other human beings every day and live our separate lives when there’s a person sitting next to you on the train or in line for coffee who goes home and makes things like this what even IS being human holy shit.

GOOD FUCKING JOB.

Aggie 2011

For this piece I created an intimate space for sharing stories, with ample light and comfortable seating for both viewer and storyteller. The stories come from my grandmother, Mary Agnes Sullivan, and the particpant is invited to take a story or quote from the pile. However, as more stories are shared, the pile dwindles and slowly wastes away until eventually nothing is left but the empty shell. Similar to the loss of these stories, the space itself, in many ways domestic and homey, appears to be coming apart and decaying, turned upside down. The work was inspired by a conversation that occurred between my grandmother and me shortly after the death of her closest friend. She lamented the great loss of information and stories that occurs, and how even the little records one has are never enough to fully explain or encompass each of these moments or this person.

I realized I never uploaded photos of this coat I made tonight after discovering This Photo from the 1998 F/W  Dior by John Galliano Haute Couture and thinking how similar the silhouette was. So of course I mimicked it.

The quilting squares were all my by latin women in the early 60s who would sign and date their patches. I was lucky enough to find them all in the thrift along with the pink canvas to go between. The lace is from a valance, and the reverse image of the appliqued woman was a dish towel.

Skirt, overskirt, and paperclip necklace also by me.
