Honestly I feel bad for Ochre. Not only did he get screwed over like the other False DoD in being the backup, but will also always have the inherent fact he will, even on a deep level, he will be slightly compared to Clay, the Mudwing who succeeded.
Sunny notes Clay as the reason The DoD managed to turn out as well as they did, and not like the False DoD. Which while this is mainly an illustration of how good Clay is, it can also in some way be reflected on Ochre, Clay’s possible replacement. Since Ochre always focused on himself first and foremost as opposed to helping others even if his life could be on the line.
Of course, this is just a natural and even fine instinct to have, but compare this to clay who nearly drowned to save Glory, who tried to hide Peril so she wouldn’t be caught by Scarlet even before he knew he was fireproof, who volunteered to fight so Tsunami wouldn’t have to, who ran into The Nightwing Island with Deathbringer to save Glory despite having no real idea of what might be there, who nearly died time and time again to make sure the others would be okay. All of this shows how Ochre could never compare to Clay(even with his lack of flame resistance) due to how Clay, as Sunny herself describes him, solid, dependable, and kind, traits Ochre does not possess that let The False DoD turn out how they are.
This isn’t to spite Ochre btw, I think he’s actually pretty cool as a character, especially with this comparison. I understand if people are against this though(hence the anonymity in case I regret this later lol)

“Ochre,” he pleaded, seizing me by the shoulders with near feral determination in his eyes. Behind us, the creature screeched and tore down another building, crystal shards of glass raining down like demented snow. “Close.Your. Eyes.”
I mumbled disagreement.
“For the love of God, just do it already before something horrible happens.”
“No,” I whispered.
His fists clenched around my shoulders. An aura of black had begun forming around him. “These people are going to die if I don’t do something, and you know what happens if any-”
“I won’t,” I said with finality. “You’ve never told me what happens while you ‘go off’, or what happens to you or them, or why I even need to close my eyes in the first place...” Why I hear the soft whoosh of wings. Why when I do open my eyes, there’re dead bodies everywhere, not all of them enemies.
Carnelian stopped, hesitated for a second, let go of me, then ripped a sleeve off his jacket.
I blushed. “Whoa, what the heck are you doing?!”
“Saving you,” He grumbled, his face turning an adorable shade of coral as the black aura surrounding him grew darker and darker. He wrapped the sleeve over my eyes, and as the world turned black he held my face in his hands. I blushed harder.
“Be back soon,” Carnelian whispered, his voice beginning to warp as it always did when he went off, saving the world. “Stay.”
My fists clenched, but before I could rip off the denim sleeve and scream at him for leaving, the hands let go of my face, and footsteps coupled by the whoosh of wings told me he was already gone.

Carnelian is possessed by a demon that he begins losing control over when experiencing strong feelings such as anger, shock or, most often, passion.
This makes his relationship with Ochre a little rocky, but not only because of this.
You see, Carnelian’s demon is a bit dramatic in that
um
well
if any poor soul looks at Carnelian when he manifests this demon, then they are “Marked”, which makes the demon, and in turn Carnelian, experience an overwhelming urge to kill said person. :|
So
Yeah Carnelian is pretty emotionally reserved. Kind of a more limited birdbox situation lol.
But
But
Ochre takes Carnelian on a date where he wears a blindfold.
So as long as no one else sees them, they can do pretty much whatever they want.
