I do think a lot of the Fuffy subtext comes from the writing, but the parts that come from the acting are hilarious, because I don't think SMG was intentionally playing Buffy as having a crush, but we do know for a fact that Eliza Dushku was intentionally playing Faith as having a crush, and that nobody remembered to stop her. So she plays every scene like she is agressively seducing Buffy. Meanwhile SMG was obviously told "Faith represents Buffy's hidden urges and wants to lure her into them", so she obviously proceeded to play every scene like Buffy was being tempted by *something* and furiously repressing that temptation, and the resulting concoction is just the gayest dynamic imaginable.
let’s talk about willow and faith hating each other and both having a crush on buffy. let’s talk about it
stop i was literally thinking about this so much last night. tv's messiest toxic lesbo love triangle TO ME. both willow and faith orbiting around buffy and basing so much of their identities around buffy but in completely opposite ways and resenting each other for being for buffy what they themselves can't be—the comfort of familiarity vs the thrill of danger, two opposite manifestations of intimacy; safety vs seduction, light vs dark, love vs love; one girl who feels like she's taken for granted and the other who feels like she'll never be chosen long-term... buffy who loves them both but neither of them can fill the role the other fills for buffy so they both feel rejected and jealous of the other because they both want buffy whole for themselves. and the kicker is that they both are vaguely aware of why they dislike each other but neither realizes the true root of the issue because they're both REPRESSED!!! not that knowing they're both lesbians would've helped with any of this but at least they'd be like, aware of Why they feel so strongly about it.
and obviously it goes beyond buffy too though she is always the crux because they wouldn't even be thinking so much about each other otherwise but like. both envying the other for being what they can't be in general. faith resenting willow for being loyal and innocent (which she secretly craves to be but is too traumatized to let herself be) and willow resenting faith for being rebellious and not conforming (which she secretly craves to be but is too afraid to let herself be). two mirrors one on each side of buffy.
anyway a polycule would not have fixed them but i still think they should've given it a try
