One of my favorite tropes/storytelling devices in media has to be inevitable tragedy, but told from another room. Think Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, or the siege of Mandalore arc (especially the Phantom Apprentice episode). You know the main story, but meanwhile you follow these other characters and see how the storylines interweave. You see all the missed opportunities and know they can't be taken because the other story, the main tragedy, has already happened and can't be stopped.
